Now with Berg staying, I’m wondering if NWM wants to come home and play for us, how could a deal be done? With no first-rounder available and Butters staying this season, how can we acquire NWM, realistically?

Future 1s and pushing out Farrell, Sinn, Berry, Whitlock etc
Interesting; I was thinking of something similar in a pair of F1s and Farrell, but then I thought that’s unlikely due to the club re-signing Kane. Also, now with Sinn re-signing today and Berry being a pick that they deliberately targeted in the draft, I’m unsure if that realistically offers a package like that to SOS.

Players extending and then being traded the upcoming trade period has happened before

No, I’m not doubting that. Of course, he can always be traded, but I’m not sure if the club wants to go down that path. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember Crippa extending a player and then trading them in the same trade period window.

Port won't entertain pushing out Farrell, Sinn, Berry or Whitlock. That would be awful list management considering Port just re-signed Farrell on a five year deal, Sinn on a two year deal today, Berry still has another two years left on his mandatory three year deal; top 20 picks get three year deals and Whitlock is a developing Key Forward and Port doesn't have a lot of those if they move on the likes of Lord and Finlayson.

He's out of contract, it would be a future first plus some steak knifes / third part trades

That is what I thought of, 2026 first rounder as a basis and all that mumbo jumbo pick swaps etc.

That would be viable if Port gets access to Doug Cochrane as an NGA player. Though I know St Kilda and their supporters won't accept 1 x 1st rounder + a bunch of other picks.

Realistically, would Jed McEntee be enough or would we need to add something? He's tagged Tom Stewart once, has featured in an AFL Grand Final sprint heat, 47 games so just about to enter his prime. Not sure what it would do for club culture though seeing as he's a favourite amongst the players, fans and coaches.

When you put it like that, I'd like to see what St Kilda will add for the stats padder.

NWM possibly play wing at Port or rotating hald back to mid with the likes of Rozee. The more rotations through the guts with good synergy, the better overall and to put pressure on opposition midfield and their taggers if any. Rotating the likes of Butters, Hornet, Rozee, Bergs, NWM, Wines, Drew and potentially Jackson and even SPP if required mixes it up. Food for thought too, having both Drew who can tag and Bergs and can go with the best in the guts is a bonus, example, they have Daicos in the guts, have bergs on him, if Daicos rotates to half back or even forward line just get Drew to stick to him and keep Bergs in the middle.

I thought it at the time, but the timing of the Kane Farrell re-signing was baffling to me. I'd have let it simmer until August and then seen the situation before re-signing him. If another club poached him I wouldn't have been unhappy with the progress made by Jones, Sinn and Rozee's form across half back.

I definitely think we re-signed him too early because there was interest from Victoria and we could've gotten a good pick for him.
