Saw it on the news an hour ago. The article was on how the NZ press were not happy with the number of medals the NZ athletes brought home. The NZ PM then appears ands quotes something around this (forgive me if its slightly wrong):

If NZ funded as much Australia did for the Olympics, NZ would get a lot more medals than Australia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UMMMMMMM..........NO!!!!!

Ahh well, at least they can make up for it in the Sheep Olympics

Actually the PM said that "if we put in proportionally more money in sports funding as the Australians are doing currently we (NewZealand) would get more medals at the olympic games.

She did not say New Zealand would get more medeals than Australia in the Olympics.

New Zealand tally of 1 Gold and 3 Bronze medals is about average for NZ at the Olympics.

As an ex-pat Kiwi I have nothing to be ashamed of here, I thought the Kiwis did OK, not spectacular, just OK. NZ has consistently picked up around a half dozen medals at every Games, including 1 or 2 Golds - whats the big deal here ?

NZ had a great Olympics at Seoul in 1988 when for some reason they dominated the sailing and picked up 5 Golds but that was definately the high water mark, its been back to normal since then.

Sure - watching the Track and Field and noticing the absence of the famous Black Singlet has been a sobering experience but NZ's experience is like every other Anglo-Celtic country in athletics, African countries now dominate these events and its a rare occasion indeed if you see anyone with fair skin running around the track.

So whats the big deal with NZ's Olympic performance ? - I can't see any.

Aside from (as BSA pointed out) the track and field non starters (Walker,Snell and others the Kiwis have a fairly good tradition there, where were they this time?) they did okay. Proportianal to their population maybe they might be disappointed, but funding/facilties and the most important thing, athletes who can compete at the highest level were missing this time around. Whos to say in four years that some kid who is 13 now isnt going to be their 'thorpedo' at Athens.
