We have injured players everywhere except at RB. We can get it done 4 yards at a time. Feel for Cook without Penn. This time of year most teams have injuries. Time for other guys to step up. Go Raiders.

So as expected our season ended 3 weeks ago when Carr got hurt. Disappointing way for it to go down given with a healthy Carr we probably beat a pretty average Texans. Make Oz beat us and they are no chance.

As upbeat as many tried to be about us being able to cover for Carr, i don't think the team ever thought it either.

Raiders fans as disappointing as it is for you now to be out of the play offs.

Kudos on a great season where you have announced to the competition that you are back again as a serious contender.

Never nice when injuries cruel your chances.

But you guys can be very proud and pleased with what you have achieved this season and it must give you great optimism going into next season as there is no reason why (with the injury gods giving you a better run ) you won't improve next season.

Well done and nice to have The Raiders back as a serious competitor. :thumbsu:

Seeing what happened without Carr he should be the MVP

14 points from a first game QB without a LT wasn't too bad. Shouldn't have given up so many points tho to a crap team like Houston.
Which is exactly why Norton will be relieved of his duties as DC. The team is interested in a few guys to take over that role. Two names I can CONFIRM are Wade Phillips and Cory Undlin.

You guys need a new DC & a healthy QB. Not much else.
Agreed. Need an upgrade at RB (a bell cow because Murray will leave in FA), a slot receiver and a RT. On D, need two interior linemen, a 3 down linebacker to replace Malcolm Smith, a slot corner, and maybe a safety as well.

The holes are fixable in one off-season. Regardless of what happens this off-season, it will only be a success once they re-sign #4 to a long term deal.

The Raiders have been talking to Wade Phillips about a position on the coaching staff for 'the last few days.' Phillips has at least one other playoff team wanting to speak to him about a position on their staff, so this situation may take a while to develop.

Chewy316 - with Murray likely to leave, would we consider using pick 24 to get a RB?

Christian McCaffrey is expected to go top 30, maybe available at 24 :-
http://fansided.com/2016/12/06/stanford-running-back-christian-mccaffrey-declare-2017-nfl-draft/

Do you know much about him?

I guess much depends on what happens in free agency as to what we need to draft but he does have an impressive record.
Doubt we use #24 on a RB. I actually think we'll go after someone like Eddie Lacy to replace Latavius tbh.

As for McCaffrey, I know a lot about him. Have watched plenty of Stanford games. He doesn't impress me as a round 1 RB. He's a guy I'd consider in the 3rd round. Reminds me a lot of Richard and Washington, and I would personally prefer a bruiser like Lacy instead to compliment what we already have.

One linebacker we have scouted extensively is Jarrad Davis (I think that's his name) out of Florida (Gators). No idea really where he'll go in the draft (projections are all over the place right now, ask me again 1-2 weeks prior to the draft).

Lacy could be a great addition, a new team might be just the tonic he needs to get back to his best.

Seen Davis linked to us on a few sites like this one :-

Round 1: Jarrad Davis, ILB – Florida
I’ve been a big proponent of the Raiders finding themselves a new middle linebacker for some time. I routinely mocked Reggie Ragland to them a year ago and am hoping they finally address the position in 2016

Let’s be honest—the Raiders’ linebackers (excluding Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin, obviously) are far from impressive. Malcolm Smith is an overrated player who continues to get slack for his Super Bowl heroics. Perry Riley Jr. was a solid mid-season addition, but is scheduled to hit free agency and may not re-sign. As for Daren Bates, I never expected much from him in the first place.

So where does the Oakland defense go from here? How about in the direction of a certain outstanding Florida linebacker by the name of Jarrad Davis?

Now I’ll admit that Davis has his flaws. His run defense can still use some work, particularly in the technique department. With that said, he’s one of the best linebackers in the nation in terms of pass coverage. Seeing as the Raiders have struggled mightily to defend the pass in 2016, it seems like a solid fit.

Davis has been lauded for his work ethic, tenacity and preparation. Adding that to the Oakland defense would make this team all the more dangerous in 2017 and beyond.

The position for Phillips wouldn't be DC, it would actually be a defensive consultant. They really seem to want to groom Norton over the long run.

Musgrave has been fired. Replaced by Todd Downing, who was the QBs coach the past 2 years in Oakland. Up and coming young elite guy who is a bit more aggressive in terms of style. Expectation is to get more out of the RBs, per Adam Caplan.

Have heard that Mike Tice is close to being retained on a 2 year extension as O-Line coach. DBs coach Marcus Robertson has been fired. Not sure about our other DBs coach Rod Woodson though.

If you're going to hire Phillips you either hire him as DC or you don't hire him. It's either his system or not.

Wow who would have bet on Musgrave getting fired before Norton after the season we just had. But sounds like Downing has big raps on him and he has done very well with DCarr. Tice and Robertson outcomes were to be expected. I don't know if Phillips would want to go for that idea though? I would have thought that he would want to be the guy with control of the defence. And TBH I would rather him in charge then Norton who just doesn't seem to have the system to fit all these guys in well. But oh well, I will support whatever path we choose to go down.

Two seasons into his Norton's tenure, the Raiders have finished with the 22nd and 25th ranked defenses.

The 2015 defense ranked 26th in passing defense, 13th in rushing defense, and 22nd in points allowed. They were 19th in sacks and 12th in takeaways. Seven times, the defense allowed 29 or more points.

Now for 2016 - Here are the yardage allowed totals for the year, in chronological order — 393, 412, 423, 406, 344, 270, 299, 254, 358, 382, 323, 263, 390, 349.

It took until Week 8 for the Raiders defense to allow less than 344 yards. They allowed under 300 yards just three times, against the 14th, 18th, and 27th ranked offenses. Norton’s defense gave up 382 or more yards eight different times.

The pass rush was nearly non-existent outside of Khalil Mack, finishing with 25 sacks as a team — dead last in the NFL. Mack accounted for 44 percent of the team’s sack production, which is both absurdly impressive for Mack, and absurdly sad for the rest of the defense.

Oakland’s defense was also the 4th most penalized defense in the league, with 1,051 yards on 115 penalties.

I am shocked they want to persist with him & have Phillips groom him - surely Phillips would want to be the main man calling the shots for the Defense???

In his two seasons in Denver, Phillips led the Broncos to the #1 defense (2015) and the #4 ranked defense in 2016. Having him in charge of our D would be a huge upgrade. As for just being a consultant to help groom Norton, yeah the D should improve but not to the same degree along with I would be surprised in him accepting that role .... we shall see.

The big mystery with our LB situation was that JDR & Norton were both LB. W ould have thought LB was first on the agenda.
I think being LBs by trade, they thought they could get good production out of below average players, hence not addressing that position with greater effort.

FWIW, Heeney played very well last year. When he was inserted into the lineup, it's no secret that the D as a whole looked much better. Our LB play was sub par this year, terrible in fact. It's the #2 need I have for this team going forward, #1 being the interior pass rush.

Where was Heeney this year?
