Question marks on Martin's improvement? Are you kidding LS? Martin will win the most improved player award end of season- bookmark it :)
From last year? That wouldn't be hard. Until he cement's his spot in the team he has to have a question mark on him like any other fringe player.

He was extremely unlucky to get dropped- could have dropped just about any one of the 22 out there after the West Coast debacle. He may still have some question marks on him as a player (which I think will be largely gone by seasons end), but there is absolutely no questioning his improvement this year.

One significant figure is the percentage of scores per inside 50. Melbourne ranks number one in the competition at scoring once inside 50, with a 53.7 per cent success rate. In recent seasons this area has been a huge challenge for the side - in 2008 and 2009 the Demons were ranked 16th, while in 2010 they jumped to 10th. There are several theories behind this significant jump - a more stable forward line this year, improved kicking efficiency going inside 50, an increase in centre clearances and the ability to cause better, more ‘pure’ turnovers further up the ground. Whichever way you look at it, this is a definite sign of improvement.

Remarkably, Melbourne has the most efficient forward line in the competition. We score 53% of the time the ball enters our forward line, which is unbelievable given we lack a big strong marking target and our forward pressure is quite poor by league standards. Would never have thought this to be the case. Imagine if we are able to pump the ball in 10 more times each week!

Couldn't agree more with that last line - if we could get the ball down in our forward line more often we might actually kick a winning score on a consistent basis! Easier said than done!

Do you think if we had more midfielders that would help?

I like what you've done there.

And no, we have enough. We just need to work harder and have a game plan that's allows us to get the ball down there more often.

Gawn, IMO, will play against Carlton. Martin isn't qualified enough to play against Hampson, Warnock and Kreuzer(?)

Interesting article here

Jurrah is listed as the second most accurate player in the league, under a system that takes into account goals that players 'should kick'. In short, no punishment for missing miracle goals...

I still reckon he's missing goals he should be getting this year!

Dean Bailey played representative footy in Ireland with two Lyons...

One with the initial G who, utilitising my talent's of the Zodiac, looks in that photo to be only a decade or two away from debilitating back injuries...

And the other with the initial R, who appears to be sucking an acid drop, both in the picture and most of his press conferences these days...

Not to mention a C. Lamb!

All that's missing is a B. van Schaik.

Interesting.

However given our lack of a forward press it highlights that if we don't score the ball is easily rebounded away. Basically it’s a 50/50 if the ball goes forward, as compared to a Collingwood that by weight of numbers score heavily. Not necessarily by clean crisp ball movements but by sustained efforts.

he has played very well for the last two weeks... i dont think warnock will play due to slight concussion and Kruzer will be underdone.
If we play gawn put him in the goal square for a quarter or 2 and let him do all the forward ruckwork...

Martin's an excellent second fiddle ruckman, but I agree Gawn needs to come in to relieve him around the ground.

Martin has been amazing, but he can only get more tired. We need to rejuvinate, Blease, Howe and Gawn for next week

Bate, Newton and Davey out

One more, the way Martin probes the centre circle for the best angle before jumping in the ruck reminds me a lot of Jeff White. Contrast to Jamar's straight jump.

I am liking Martin more and more each week.

Don't forget that it takes most ruckmen at least 5-6 years to have an impact. He has only really had about 1 year as a ruckman, so I would say he is tracking along very nicely.

Good call... in fact I reckon this could end up being a good thing, Jamar going down that is. Martin does seem to have much more variety to his taps than Jamar, who is almost always the dink over the back to Moloney. Once our mids learn to play to Martin's style more, it could be very beneficial for our clearances and such.
Not saying that Jamar isn't a fantastic ruckman, he is... but forcing the midfielders to change it up could end up being a positive, making us less predictable.

Also a good call... exciting call.

Observation - honesty.

If we have Newton on our list (let alone playing seniors!) we are NEVER going to be a threat.

Davey - needs a magoos run.

Bate - who at the club has told him he can't play? Looks shot on confidence.

Martin - was impressed with his willingness to compete.

If the Saints make the 8 (big if) they should take the MFC out on the town for giving them their mojo back.

Maric's goal wasn't a goal. Proved on TSFS, whih in itself, puts TFS to shame as a footballing programme

After Rivers marked and went back and kicked a goal against Carlton, it made me think when Jamar and Garland are back, Martin to the backline and Rivers to become a permanent forward, we really lack a key forward and I think Rivers can become that man, he was drafted as a CHF and we have to try something and after spending his whole career in defence he could bring some forward pressure to our forward line.
