Do people like this?

I don't understand why they don't give the bowling team two balls per innings, and let them use them however they want; so teams can structure up their bowling attack and ball use to suit.

Brett Lee has taken aim at the use of dual new balls in ODIs, claiming the change has stripped fast bowlers of arguably their most potent weapon in the late overs of an innings - reverse swing.

Slightly off topic but what are your thoughts with test matches, captains are able to take the 2nd new ball at any time they want between overs 2-80 but can't take the 3rd ball til the 160th overs. *hypertetical* captain decides to take the 2nd new ball at the 45th over but as a result there stuck with that ball til the 160th.

It's hypothetical. And stupid. Most innings don't last 140-160 overs where the batsmen could take care of the non moving ball.

On topic, I like the 2 balls. Neither batter or bowler seems to be hindered in anyway. Ball stays whiter(easier for batsmen) but swings longer ( easier for bowlers).

2 new balls in ODI cricket I think is working well. The VB series just gone was awesome. It gives bowlers, particularly seamers, more hope overall cos they can get more bounce and conventional seam and swing for longer. I would of thought that soft balls are easier to bat against...reverse swing you dont really see many bowlers who can pull it off well these days anyway - maybe Jimmy Anderson and Brett Lee every now and again, and Umar Gul.

IMO, the more advantages bowlers can get the better. I hate seeing run fests. they get boring.

Probably the bowler in me speaking out....

I'm not a fan; I like seeing skillful death bowlers like Malinga and Gul use reverse swing to dismiss and limit batsmen who are not good enough to counter it.

You're obviously not a bowler. It actually helps batsmen a lot more than bowlers. What it does is that the ball stays a lot harder, making it much easier for the batsmen to go the journey, and as Lee has stated- takes out reverse swing.

I object to the rule, purely because ODI's are already swung in batsmens favour, and this is another stupid rule to help batsmen.

I am not, this is true.

But scores are not showing a massive rise in totals posted.

i don't think the lack of reverse-swing is our bowlers main problem. were lee and harris trying to reverse-swing from outside leg to leg or something? mckay noted for his slower balls rather than swing did ok... so i sort of understand his complaint as it is something he has used to great effect in the past. it's only one part of a bowlers arsenal though.

bowlers will invent new ways to scuff the ball more, fielders will skid it in a bit more, before the rule is changed to the bowlers favor again you'd think.

So far I like them juggling 2 white balls. They seem to stay shiny for longer and don't get all matted with dew and grass as the night wears on, so you can see them when they're slapped through the covers. From the recent series it seems the bowlers don't mind the prolonged hardness in their hands meaning the faster guys can come on at all times. Having the fresher balls seemed to produce more consistently strong climaxes rather than before when the late finishes just sputtered out.
