ODI Squad

Finch & Warner opening is a gamble, but would be good viewing if they pulled off a decent partnership.

Hard to complain too much about that squad. :thumbsu:

Sure it is. No Hughes and all of Finch, Warner and Marsh makes little sense. No Voges (language of the press release suggests injury played no part here). Watson still isn't opening. As a direct result, no Smith, who has actually performed well in ODD's over the past two seasons and is probably worth a shot in the middle. Doherty in the team.

14-15 months from the WC, I feel they've experimented and gone for broke when they probably should have just consolidated (batting order) and consolidated where experimentation was worthy (spinner + keeper, mainly. With Haddin and Doherty you can leave them out of the team for a year and bring them back for the WC and know what you're getting. In the meantime you can see if you get something better, particularly with the spinner )

You could have

Watson
Hughes
Clarke
Bailey
Smith
Voges (remove one of Smith/Voges for Maxwell if you please)
Paine/Wade and so forth
Faulkner
MJ
McKay
Lyon

there's still some experimentation in the batting order, but it's more of a "oh well that makes sense" kind

See it's very easy to complain about the squad. I mean, Shaun Marsh is in it.

You may note that I said it's hard to complain "too much" about the squad.

There are pretty much always at least one or two head-scratching choices and for mine Marsh is definitely one for this one, but on the whole I like the look of the squad and I doubt Marsh will get a game, so that's why I didn't go into it, as I'm generally happy with it.

Agree with most of what you've said though, there are some good points there. Voges was mighty stiff if his omission was not related to his injury and with Hughes it may be that they want him to concentrate on his 4 day cricket, if the SS is back up and going during this ODI series, hence picking Marsh to carry the drinks rather than him, possibly.

Warner was always going to get picked after the way he played in the Ryobi Cup and in the SS and tests since then and IMO we need to persist with Finch in the short-form games, as he is just so damaging and dominant when he's in form.

I would love to see Maddison have a crack.

The kid looks like a star who could really appreciate a sprinkle of opportunities at the highest level.

Smith's too low at 5 IMO. Needs to build into his innings. He'll be the perfect replacement for Clarke when he retires.

I agree with you on Watson opening - gives the side far more options in the middle order.

Don't see why Watto won't be ideal at no.3.

Warner
Finch
Watson
Clarke
Bailey
Maxwell/Voges/Smith

is one hell of a top 6, IMO, especially with potentially Haddin/Paine/Wade to come and then Faulkner and MJ. What a batting lineup!! :) :thumbsu:

Swap Finch for Marsh and I'd be pretty happy with that.

I like Marsh, but he's hugely injury-prone and for mine I also believe we need to find out whether Finch is going to produce what he's been doing in T20i's consistently in ODI cricket as well and now is as good a time as any to do so, especially as he has been in the team for the past 12 months anyway.

The fact that we bat all the way down to no.9 also means that we can pretty easily afford to have a couple of "boom or bust" types at the top of the order, as if one, or even both of them fail in any particular innings, we still have loads of batting to come after them, to steady the ship and allow us to post a good score.

That said, I'd have Warner on his last chance for a while, as he hasn't lived anywhere near up to his potential in ODI's yet. If he doesn't come up with the goods pretty much immediately I'd start looking to other alternatives.

With Smith a fixture in the test team for now, I'd like him to concentrate on that.

Shame they chose Warner for ODIs, I'd rather he stuck to bash and crash + test cricket. I don't think any of our players should be playing all three formats. Especially those who aren't that good at one of them or are very injury prone.

Warner and Marsh really are golden boys though. Warner has been a bit shit in ODIs generally and Marsh is a flake. I think Hughes has been stiffed. He hasn't been any worse than those 2, in fact, I'd say he's been better.

Yes but his S/R is 70 odd...sure that is acceptable 10 years ago, but not now. Not when 300 is a regular thing. Needs to strike at a bare minimum of 80.

Too soon, needs another season. T20 yes, ODI's...probably a year away, tests a year after that.

Can't really complain about the squad except for Marsh, I would have had White or Hughes ahead of him. Pretty strong line up at the moment though. Finch and Warner are similar players but both deserve to be there. Watson is fine at 3, Bailey is obviously a terrific ODI player and Maxwell has his knocker but how many batsmen average 35 with a 130 strike rate? I can't see any argument to fit a different batsman into that 11.

Finch
Warner
Watson
Clarke
Bailey
Maxwell
Haddin
Johnson/Faulkner
Pattinson
McKay
Doherty
