For all of the moaning about our defence, how high we press or whatever is the excuse du jour.

It's a glaring lack of hard nosed players willing to do the hard work both ways and bring a ruthlessly physical aspect to the game that is missing from our side. It's why teams like Hawthorn beat us on the regular. For all of the skill and Champion Date top 10's AA or whatever other statistical metric you care to name we have in our side.

Think about who it is that is always the first to fly the flag on behalf of a teammate being set upon by multiple opponents. It's always Tom Liberatore a guy who will be 34 going into next season and a guy who lest be honest is part of the problem in a side that gets beat up on the spread. Thus exposing our defence. There I did it again, I shot Bambi.

The only other guy who shows any sort of fighting spirit or campaignerishmess is VillainDerMeer. A player who if a poll of this board was taken today as to who should be loaded into a cannon and fired into Uranus would run a close second to Lachie McNeil.

Sure VDM isn't the complete player that we'd all like him to be, but until one of Jones, Dolan or Hynes push him out of the side through force of performance. Then I'll take his aggression and campaignerishness over their potential any day.

Both of those guys played most of the year not because they were Beveridges favourites or some such. They played because all of the likely replacements were either Injured: Weightman, A Jones. Not physically ready: Dolan, Hynes. Or those on the fringes yo-yoing in and out of the side because they are what they are: A. Jones again Poulter and Garcia.

With the exception of the known Weightman and the unknown of Hynes and perhaps Sellwood what we do know is that there isn't a lot of the hardness needed to compete with the better sides waiting in the wings.

This is one of the reasons I don't mind the idea of getting Steven May for a season or 2. He is a hard KPD, just what we need, and likely quite gettable from a trade perspective.

Agreed he has cemented himself as a forward and really worked on his craft silly to use him as anything other then the odd throw at the stumps if we need a different spark on ball

Have said for a while that Westy is our Robbie Gray. Play forward and midfield - both with impact. He is particularly good when the heat is on - oppo mids getting away from us or we are in front and need to shut it down in goes West - his desperation to get the ball first is first rate.
