List Mgmt. Off Season Changes

We need to grow a set with our list management to pull ourselves out if this 6th-10th space. Bont/Lobb/Libba/Williams/Dale and a few others don't have many years left so it's time to take a few calculated risks.

Last year we were a shot of landing Barrass and if he played this year we'd probably be top 4. He chose Hawthorn and we've presumably got a million in spare cap space. We should have offered an extra 500k and got him.

Something HAS to give, stuck in the perennial 5-10 position on the ladder. It's clearly a system issue, and if something doesn't drastically change with the Bevo gameplan over the summer then Bevo simply has to go. Signing him in the first half of the season was the worst decision the club could have made, they are happy accepting mediocrity. Our list is so much better than the position we seem to always be in
I'll give him next year to make changes but if the club fails I think it's time for the club to sack him at the end of the year.

It’s just one game but I think Arty has finally come of age. If our forward line next year can be Darcy, naughton, Croft, flea, arty, west and dolan our forward line really can’t be much better. We need to find another midfielder to go ahead of libba. Sander, Garcia and West can all potentially take up that role. Thing with Sanders is he’s to afraid of making mistakes if he can stop being so reliant with hand balling to his teammates he’d be a much better player and hopefully he can work on that in the offseason. Butters would be perfect if we managed to get him. For our defence we have the intercept players and playmakers in Lobb, Dale, JJ (needs replacement soon), Jod, Cleary. We are missing players that can tackle and completely shut down opposition forwards. We need a lockdown tall and a lockdown small. If the rest of the young guns can take a step forward next season that’d be great as well. I think the easiest target this off-season can be the small defender. But most important is tall defender.

No doubt I’ll think of other things but my first take is …

Forget the defensive structure or the individual defenders. Or bottom six whipping boys and the like. Also forget the head coach because that’s not changing for two years no matter how much we complain about his matchday shortcomings.

What we need more than anything else is a side that can win finals And the mid-season matches that count, like playing against other contenders.

We need hard arsed players who play tough, physical, unforgiving football and are prepared to get their hands dirty. I don’t care if they are dickheads as long as they are committed competitive players with a reasonable set of skills.

We need players who can deal with pressure games and onfield pressure acts. Who are unceasing in applying pressure themselves. Who dish out physical (but mostly fair) treatment. Mentally tough too.

What happens if you don’t have enough of these? You become flat track bullies. A side that can’t win in September.

Exhibit A: Rhylee West

Others who are hard arsed or at least full on competitors:
Bont
Kennedy
Darcy
Baker
Croft
Weightman
Richards
Libba
Harmes
Freijah
A Jones
Naughton
Williams
Cleary
Garcia
Smith
and probably Dale and Lobb
(A few only just scrape onto that list.)
That’s barely 18 players. I’m giving a free pass at this stage to about half a dozen first year players as it’s mostly too early to tell. Hynes is the most likely of them and Sellwood has shown a bit.

Others like Dolan, Walker and Jaques have shown skill but haven’t yet convinced me they’ll be tough enough. But they might. They have time and obvious talent.

That leaves a lot of players who are either close to the end of their careers (L Jones, Treloar, Scott, JJ) so it’s neither here nor there whether they play another season. Or players who just aren’t tough enough. VDM is a special case - he is physical enough and in the opposition’s face but sadly he just hasn’t got the footy skills.

That still leaves a dozen or so players who have played senior footy. In some cases a LOT of senior footy. I won’t list them by name but you can easily figure out who I’m talking about. I’ll concede some could be fringe acceptable (eg Bramble, Gallagher).

We can’t get rid of them all in a single off season anyway and we may end up with good reason to keep 2-3 of them. But we need to start transitioning away from that type. And not get in any more recycled players unless they have the same sort of attack-ball, attack-the-game attitude that Baker has.

Our drafting team has to put hard arsedness right up near the top of their selection criteria.

Until we shift the balance we’re in for a lot of disappointment.

And also ridicule. A bit like the notorious “handbag pussycats” of Geelong before Chris Scott took over about 20 years ago.

Might be way off beam, as I’ve only seen a little bit of him, but could Lachie Smith be developed as a defender?
I doubt he has the pace. But it’s a question worth asking. He’s tough, competitive, doesn’t mind body on body, can take a contested mark, is solid and tall. And he’s only 19 or 20.

There are some decent KPDs who aren’t quick.

I mentioned this a little while ago. I think he has the ability to be developed there. And it’s probably the only chance he has of playing AFL with us.

Was unable to test at the state Draft Combine due to injury but his 3.13 seconds on the 20m sprint at the Coates Talent League testing day earlier in the year was an insight into his mobility.

Taken from our overview when he was drafted.

In this vein of thinking, Davidson and Bramble stood out massively yesterday. A lot of very weak efforts on the ball/man.

Cleary isn't the hardest but I think he just needs more strength. He goes when it's his time.

I'd be getting in Sellwood to the defensive mix as a priority.

Grant Thomas’s prediction came painfully true. I can’t remember all the players he listed but most seemed to be exposed when under pressure. Baker the exception.

You don’t win finals or final-like games with 4 or 5 of your 23 who have that flaw. You can carry maybe 1-2 if they have exceptional skills (eg as an outside runner).

Just talking player positional changes. This is what I'd be thinking:

  • get Arty into the best 22 asap.
  • push Sellwood hard in the pre-season with a best 22 spot on offer.
  • Transition away from JJ and maybe Bramble.
  • Transition away from VDM and McNeil.
  • Train Croft up in the roaming CHF role. The one Naughton was playing when we had Darcy and JUH in the side. Keep Darcy and Naughton deeper as it was working well.
  • Keep Buss in the 22 - he needs to develop and also gives the ability to have Lobb as relief ruck.
  • Start the transition for Libba away from the midfield - either rest him more or find other rotational positions for him. Get more minutes for West in there.
  • Baker/Freijah as the main wing players - don't play them in other positions they need to be specialised. Williams as wing relief/rotation.
  • Change the midfield structure to be more defensive minded. We're too attacking there and get burned too often.
  • Get Treloar/Weightman fit and healthy

Backs: Buss, Lobb, JOD, Dale, Bramble, Williams, Cleary (with Sellwood to look to join)
Mids: English, Bont, Richards, Libba, Kennedy, Treloar, Baker, Freijah
Forwards: Darcy, Naughton, Croft, Weightman, West, Arty, Harmes/Garcia

We can surely make changes to our list that will be worthwhile, but I fear that we will only be papering over the cracks that fatally flaw our game plan.

It's the system of play (the ridiculously high press with no hope of effectively defending a turnover) that needs to be changed to give the players a chance to defend against the better teams that can exploit our high press.

We have a system problem, not so much a personnel problem. We can't keep blaming losses on the players having a bad day.

Add Silvangi and a Butts type.

Add Budarick.

See if we can pry out a small fwd with some pace.

Delist Gardner and Scott.

No contract offer for Treloar (yes it hurts), JJ or Jones.

Get JUH off the books.

Get rid of the shit dead wood on the list.
Gards is contracted
