FB: Starcevich, Butts, Williams
HB: Dale, Lobb, Bramble
C: Davidson, Libba, Baker
HF: Kennedy, Naughton, A.Jones
FF: Weightman, Darcy, West
R: English, Bont, Richards
Int: Dovaston, Croft/JOD, Treloar, Cleary

2 gettable players added, and a decent draft pick coming in, and the team looks better for next year.

Upgrades on Baker and Cleary would be good if available too
Starcevich whilst a good player is a minor head knock away from forced retirement

No issue with Butts however

Agreed, but it's time to take a risk. Need one of Starcevich, Vlastuin, Duggan et al and hes the most likely.
Vlastuin the only one worth it there but would depend what we had to give up

Starcevich is getting to the Paddy McCartin minor knock to the head level of concussion which is too much to ignore for me

Why does our VFL team continue to perform strongly year after year but our AFL team continue to be a slightly better than average team?

Our programs aren't any different but our results are.

Is it simply a matter of AFL coaching being a full time gig and when you can afford to invest in a highly skilled coaching team, the performances will show?

Our biggest weaknesses IMO are likely to be a combination of the following:

  • Lack of a highly skilled, strong and united coaching team.
  • A weak or lack of defensive game plan.
  • A lack of mentally strong players. Focus on the mental side of lifestyle / game. The results will show.
  • Non-existent professional hecklers to get underneath the skin of opposition players.

I'm sick of the same shit year after year. Why can't we be more like Hawthorn, Geelong & Collingwood?

Because our list is full of good to very good vfl players who don't perform at AFL level and aging players who AFL has gone past but are still good vfl players with also some very good young players developing,

Good/Great VFL No good AFL:
Baker (Last month elite)
Coffield
Khamis
Poulter
Scott
Garcia
Cleary (finished year strong)
Gardner

Young Developing:
Busslinger*
Hynes*
Jacques
Gallagher
Croft*
Dolan*
A.Jones*
L.Kennedy
Sellwood
Smith
Walker
(* for those who have played AFL and shown some promise)

Old declining:
Duryea
L.Jones

Throw in the odd game for Treloar/Harmes/Davidson/McNeil and its a fairly well balanced and strong team when we have few injuries like we had back end of the year

No room for Freijah?

Nailed it. Crumble when it matters both physically and mentally.

1. Learn how to defend.

2. Get actual decent defender.

Same old story and mistakes with us year in, year out.

Thing is, point 1 is entirely within our own control - it doesnt rely on the vagaries of the trade market, or having elite defenders

Sure, the back 6, particularly the key positions, rely on defensive ability, but team defence is about strategy and intent. Any team should be able to execute team defence if coached and drilled properly.

We should be able to snatch back those 3-4 easy goals per game we tend to give up, which would make us competitive against any team.

Maybe next year

Yes correct and he would still be in the top 3-4 state league middle aged defenders like you asked for,

Sellwood has yet to play an AFL game so how is he a great example?

Where did I say keep him on the list because he is a good bloke?

Again whilst not one you'd want in your team each week he is an adequate depth player on minimal coin this irrational hatred of him is quite weird
Adequate depth, how much confidence would have if he had to play on the weekend?

Its not hatred of the person, its a bewilderment that when assessing a list spot and thinking someone who has not made it at AFL level after 10 pre seasons deserves a spot. The club was crying out for a tall defender this year, and went to him once and how did that turn out.

Sellwood's already shown he can more than mix it at the best state leagues in Victoria and Western Australia, after only coming across mid year. Super excited for what he can show after the summer. We wont know if he will make it AFL level till next year, we already know the other bloke wont make it.

As much as I did in any of the other KPD we played this year,

None of them had a good season

Ryan Hargreaves was in the rooms on roaming Brian a few weeks back, he had a boy playing that weekend in Melbourne and was there with Luke Darcy I think? Great to see him there.

The way our backline is travelling the young Hargrave boy might be called on to pull on the jumper come February.

His son played a solidish season in the SANFL
Mainly played as medium forward

Would be a good rookie selection to develop

Could we get anything for Bailey Williams? He is the epitome of a pea heart. Never seen him play well in a crunch game. There could be a north or saints who take a punt on him.
Wouldn't say he is a pea heart he puts his body out there but would agree on the always goes missing in crunch games

Don’t think any other clubs would be interested

Williams would be one of Bevo’s first picked. He’s the guy that gets deployed in various positions when there’s injury issues during the game.

I like him but he certainly makes a habit of crumbing in big moments which is strange for a guy that usually appears cool and calm.

Out: Bains
Whoever keeps giving the worst small forward duo in the comp contracts
The guy training our key defenders
The tackling coach
Bevo
Caesar
The high press
Picking guys purely based on GPS numbers
Yes out Baines & our invisible president who didn't let Bevo trade JUH last November when he had value, now his not worth a cold pie.

Just listened to her on the Danny Boyd podcast. Said they re-signed bevo due to his relationship with the players and not KPIs on wins/ losses. Don’t think we are a serious club sometimes

There is a real lack of ambition at the club and it’s sad. Everyone is just happy enough that we’re not a basket case and that others are in a worse position than us. No ambition to actually be contenders

It's kinda pathetic really. Need a Smorgon Kennedy like 1997 style board takeover again. Shake the joint up. There is so much going to waste and it's the same script year after year.

A nicey nicey President and a lawyer CEO both of them regurgitating the same meaningless platitudes year in year out. Both of them played off a break by the coach who is the one really running the club.
