This is always a balance about how many list spots are left open vs what you can get in during trade period, typically between 5 and 9 players move off the list whether they are delisted or traded

Out of Contract - Extend
  • Artie Jones, done enough to extend
  • JJ, done enough to extend given he got through 16 games this year
  • Baker, good end to the year, he is a back up player while he will be extended we need to improve in this position
  • Sellwood, sounds like he will be extended so must have shown enough at VFL level

Out of Contract - Maybe Extend or Retire (2)
  • Treloar, 50/50 as Bevo said if you know you can get 15 games from him you extend but it is an unknown, if he plays and gets through remaining VFL season I would give him a 12 month contract
  • Liam Jones, think he is less than 50% to go on, bit like Treloar

Out of Contract - Delist - 4
  • Duryea - retired
  • Anthony Scott
  • Poulter, not the worst player on our list but isnt going to get there, whether you can get minor pick upgrade in a trade is the question
  • Coffield not going to get there, whether you can get minor pick upgrade in a trade is the question

Contracted but Trade - 2
  • Jamarra, right now better out than in, shame we wont get anything in return
  • Khamis, looks like he wants out. OK forward but Croft is better and in an area of need down back he isnt good enough to play there. If we can get some value I would trade.

That provides up to 8 list spots

Areas of need
  • Key defensive
  • Mid Defensive, ie intercept player
  • Small defensive, lock down type
  • Small forward (looks like Artie / Dolan may help here)
  • Midfield, still think we are short and need to think longer term with Libba and Treloar at end, would target our first round pick at this

List Issues Remaining, List cloggers that still have terms in contracts
  • Gardiner, could play 3 years ago when he was extended for 4
  • Vandeermeer, mistake extending him for 3 years, see Gardiner and McNeil he has played 87 games now and still coughs up rubbish
  • McNeil, one year left then delist, not good enough after 75 games
  • Garcia, good tackler but just doesn't have the skills at AFL level. Not good enough to be a fill in midfield and doesnt do enough forward, doesn't have skills to go back

Upside - Young Players
  • Buss, looks a 50/50 to be honest, will know by end of 2026 if he will make it
  • L Smith, really improved at VFL level this year and looks a likely fill in if English is injured
  • JOD, only 22 and will get better
  • Cleary, shown enough now he has body of AFL player
  • Hynes, Dolan, Jacques, shown a bit at AFL or VFL level to suggest they will play a bit of AFL level in 2026
  • Freijah, Gun in waiting, best under 22 yo on our list
  • Davidson, get in gym and develop body will get better
  • Sanders, I'm still 50/50, shown a bit but not quite to the level of his draft pick, hopefully he extends for 2 years past Tassies entry
  • L Kennedy / Gallagher, not sure on these two still

"Treloar, 50/50 as Bevo said if you know you can get 15 games from him you extend but it is an unknown, if he plays and gets through remaining VFL season I would give him a 12 month contract"

Don't think Treloar qualifies for VFL finals as he hasn't played at least six games at that level.

Need to play at least 6 in the VFL and no more than 12 in the AFL as I understand it.

He qualifies as he’s only played 4 senior games

Pretty good summary well put together.

Only ones I would disagree with are JJ, getting exposed again and not getting any quicker.

Poulter 50/50 has shown improvement as a Forward and moved passed Khamis for this role, 1 year. would only want 7 or 8 turnover and would be moving on all of the players you have under list issues

Area's of need should add quality and speed.

List issues 100% spot on

Young Players fair summary

I’d be worried about Lobb next year. Hes a poor 1 v 1 defender, is going to struggle against younger, quicker forwards.

Second ruck/ back up forward may be his best option.

We are going to need another bid KPD. Silvangi is not big enough imo.

Does our ample salary cap room make it easier to eat a year of Gardner's salary for example?

I can't really say anything that has not ben said before (by me and others). The tragedy is we got beaten by what we know - AGAIN.
This time surely Bevo and the Board have been forced to recognise there must be change in some areas.

Identify who is the best defense coach out there and get him into the club.
Identify the best KPD we can get and get him.
If Sellwood isn't the Messiah chase a hbf and a small defender and get them into the club.
I admit i was wrong on getting rid of Arty Jones ( it is only one game) Baker has also performed well but i am still not convinced. I am convinced about VDM and McNeil. I get that they might be good depth but i favour getting more players into the club to increase the chances of getting a star.
Engage Libba senior as tackling coach.

After letting the dust settle from yesterdays shit show, we need to get some better talent in the back half. Get silvagni and go hard for ginbey, even a swap for buss. The key factor is improving our defensive tactics. Prime sos & scarlett would be useless in our game style.

Ginbey is a West Coast fan from Perth why would he want to come with us?

Just naming random players and saying get them is rather pointless

$$$ and a more attractive team to play for 🤷‍♂️
West Coast can pay him a **** load more then we can,

Again he's from Perth playing for his team which is the biggest in his home state why would he come to us?

He is only 20 so not like Barass leaving at the end of his career

It’s a pipe dream, but in terms of off-field personnel, I’d love us to find a role for Travis Boak so he can impart some of his mindset and preparation to a few blokes

Just talking player positional changes. This is what I'd be thinking:

  • get Arty into the best 22 asap.
  • push Sellwood hard in the pre-season with a best 22 spot on offer.
  • Transition away from JJ and maybe Bramble.
  • Transition away from VDM and McNeil.
  • Train Croft up in the roaming CHF role. The one Naughton was playing when we had Darcy and JUH in the side. Keep Darcy and Naughton deeper as it was working well.
  • Keep Buss in the 22 - he needs to develop and also gives the ability to have Lobb as relief ruck.
  • Start the transition for Libba away from the midfield - either rest him more or find other rotational positions for him. Get more minutes for West in there.
  • Baker/Freijah as the main wing players - don't play them in other positions they need to be specialised. Williams as wing relief/rotation.
  • Change the midfield structure to be more defensive minded. We're too attacking there and get burned too often.
  • Get Treloar/Weightman fit and healthy

Backs: Buss, Lobb, JOD, Dale, Bramble, Williams, Cleary (with Sellwood to look to join)
Mids: English, Bont, Richards, Libba, Kennedy, Treloar, Baker, Freijah
Forwards: Darcy, Naughton, Croft, Weightman, West, Arty, Harmes/Garcia
I’m in almost total agreement with this.

In terms of positional changes and system I’d love us to persevere with the defensive structure we tried a few weeks back. I have a feeling it was the GWS game at Marvel.

We didn’t press quite so high. Bont rarely ventured forward of centre but still got a lot of the ball and initiated many attacks. It worked a treat.

GWS we basically played man on man.

I would have thought after working so well that game we'd see it pulled out of the kit bag a bit more often.

Alas, here we are.

All this personal talk means nothing without our coach getting his head out of his arse. Every single time they came out of a stoppage from our half forward line to their end it was a goal to them, and every one looked predictable. It was torturous to watch.
