With such a complex and convoluted history, it's hard to pick out clear patterns.

There were still quite a few good KPDs in that bunch that played some good games\seasons for us.
There were certainly players that were arguably mismanaged but also plenty of bad luck stories where it is difficult to point the finger of blame at the club for them not working out better in the long term.

I'd argue that Bevo's biggest issue has been his inconsistency in how he has handled certain players.
Over doing the faith\patience with some whilst potentially under doing it with others.
However, all coaches can be accused of such failings. Let's hope he is continuing to learn something from his failures and that we get better next year.
I’d also argue that if you manage people you can’t treat them all the same and outside pecerptions are just that

I can think of times where I tried to include certain staff in things but they knew better and did it their way and we as humans are stubborn ****ers especially if we feel that someone isn’t listening or making an effort. That person could be giving 100% but just not in a way that works for the team

Couldn’t agree more.

Understand that everyone needs a bit of individual consideration.

I suppose Bevo’s weakness like most coaches is that he is pretty stubborn with his adherence to early personal judgements which from the outside may look a little generous.

Making West stay in the vfl to the point where he nearly requested a trade to learn forward craft.

Ok. Sure.

McNeil and VDM have never had to do such an apprenticeship and after all this time, have absolutely no forward craft in their game. Or much craft generally.

The whole selection integrity thing is a bit of a myth league-wide.

Barely playing West his first three seasons was negligent. He was wasted down there. Incredible he spent half a season in the VFL as recently as 2023.

Not being able to find a spot for Pat Lipinski the second half of 2021 but Robbie ****ing McComb walking into a HF/wing role the next year was just dynamite as well.

Perhaps he knew West would be a gun…the others are just space fillers. Don’t waste time and resources (rightly or wrongly) on developing them when you know their ceiling. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to move them on as quickly as hoped

Untrue. I have heard that in terms of craft both are quite good basket weavers.
Reminds me of a long boring story I heard 2nd hand when a young person at my former place of employment got promoted in a specialised technical role very early, above much more senior and qualified technical people.

The response from the selectors was that the new person has skills that weren't obvious or considered by those looking on.... Like they were a great 'networker', for example....🤔

Anyway, you all need to consider they vdm and McNeil have skills that don't seem obvious.....

When you find them, please let me know...

There is guy called Dale Morris managing Brisbane's Defence during the last 3 years - anyone know anything about him? Might be worth a chat
I’ll say it again for the people up the back….he isn’t coming back

Oh and Gia and Cameron aren’t coaching us either

People are kidding themselves if they think acquiring another defensive coach would solve anything.

The high press scheme isn't Pratt's doing, it's Bevo's. Until Bevo decides that he no longer wants to implement the same defensive scheme he across his entire coaching career, no changes to personnel (coaches or players) will do anything.

We need to really nail this draft by looking at trends in the modern game and drafting players that fit. Eg: chosing Curtain over Sanders was a no brainer but we locked in on 2 players early and would not move even though a Bont 2 was emerging. I know we were keen on Reid from Freo yet didn’t have the pick. Athletic types are taking over football it’s happening in a big way at juniors as well. The best players are also cross country runners etc.

Its more about identifying talent than traits. Sanders is fit enough. And its not his fault, but we did pay for a star (in picks), and particularly one with ties to tassie. It was a very risky move by the club.

Calling Curtain a Bont 2.0 is way overstating how good Curtain has been.

Curtain looks good and has shown more than Sanders, but has had nowhere near the form or shown the talent that Bont did in his second year.

Curtain may become an AA lock in the future but that’s not as guaranteed as it was for Bont.

We can’t look at Sanders through a completely negative lens saying it was obvious we shouldn’t have drafted him, while comparing to Curtain by saying he is the second coming of one of the greatest midfielders in the last decade.

For comparison:

I think its an interesting (and complex) scenario to examine, in terms of risk-reward. I love the club having the balls to go for things like targeting Sanders, but their talent identification has to be up to the task.

I think we traded 10 and 17, plus our 2024 1st round for Sanders plus a couple of late picks, one of which we used on Freijah.

The big deal is that had we kept the 2024 1st round, we could have picked up Murphy Reid (went the pick after the one we gave away).

In an alternate reality where we judged the risk too great, we could have selected someone with our pick 10 (13), paid for croft with pick 17. (23), Not sure exactly which picks we did use to pay for croft, but one of them would have been available for Friejah, surely. I dont think its right to tie Friejah to the Sanders trade. Possibly we could have picked up Lual as well, not sure....

To spell that out, what we paid for Sanders = unknown player @ 13 in 23. and Reid in 24.

This self-flagellation is 20/20 hindsight - sure, but it illustrates the risk. Reid is a future star who played a significant role in our recent finals loss, while Sanders didnt play. ouch.

The trade wasn’t as simple as that.

The potential Croft bid had big implications and was one of the main reasons we made the trade.

We couldn’t have known at the time of the trade where Croft would have been selected.

sure, its nice to be able to pick up croft with junk picks, but I wouldnt say 'big implications'. Worst case scenario we pay pick 10 or 17, plus spare change, for croft. Still not a bad deal and it leaves us with two 1st rounders left over. Trading so much to get ahead of croft only makes sense if we really, really rate someone ahead of him.

If Sanders was already a gun, we wouldnt be talking about the trade, but currently he is on track to be a medium talent on his way to tassie

Haha the 2021 changes threads were hilarious. Half the board wanting West selected were being ridiculed and told we only wanted him picked because his last name was West but he’d never be as good as Scott … as if that was somehow relevant to whether he was miles ahead of Robbie McComb and that’s the comparison that mattered.
