Off season movements 2020

The Siddle to Tassie story brings me back to that age-old argument of whether there's more gratification in watching your team win the Shield, or developing stars for the national team. Obviously he walks into any state-level bowling attack in the country on merit, but when Bird is a mainstay, and when Ellis, Bell and Meredith are guys you desperately want to get games into, why chase Siddle? Go and get the best batter available.

Peter Lalor just said on Offsiders that Short to Tassie is unlikely to happen.

More about developing pathways for local players than developing stars for the national team IMO.

Tassie is always going to need imports to be competitive but when you have locals that are capable at the level you want to actually play them.

Bell has 83 wickets at 24 and if Ellis' form is more than a little purple patch then Bell is probably the one making way out of those 5. Meredith offers a point of difference to the attack and has more potential to step up to the next level.

Then you have locals like Rainbird and Pyecroft who are not world beaters but decent enough 5th/6th quicks to fill in when you have injuries and they get pushed further back too. If you are Rainbird do you want to just front up for the under 23 side as an overage player knowing you have zero chance of actually getting a game, that has to be a grind mentally. I'd be taking a fat club contract to play on the weekends and doing what I was qualified to do outside of cricket during the week.

Siddle will do well but for a year, maybe two at a stretch, what is the upside. You could understand it more if he was picked up at the end of the season before when you had Wade in white hot form. Bailey has a year left, maybe we can actually get Faulkner playing some red ball, let's have one last dip at a shield here.

Silk, Doolan, McDermott, Doran, Webster are all decent enough I guess but they specialise in averaging 40 one year and then 20 the next. Asking a lot to have them all click in the one year. You'd probably need what, 3 of them to average around 40, plus Wade to get dropped from the national team and go on another tear to be able to challenge for the shield.

I thought Bailey retired?

Anyone got access to the Australian to summarise Peter lalors article that summarises movement?

I got in somehow. Essentially Siddle and Andrews to Tassie, Tremain and Zampa to NSW then talk about Australia's lack of spin options after Lyon

Darcy Short to Tassie aswell, who is this Andrews guy?
Short unlikely to happen according to Lalor.

Andrews is pretty much a left handed Webster. Decent bat, decent left arm orthodox. Better bowler though.

It will be dissapointing to miss out on Short but this Tom Andrews looks like a pretty good pickup,we will definitly need him with the loss of Simon Milenko.

Where is the speculation from Milenko being cut / leaving coming from?

Anything in writing to confirm this from a reputable source? Saw someone mention he is opening a new shop in QLD but that is surely speculation.

One day bowler maybe but Andrews never looks like taking a wicket. He's a poor man's Ashton Agar. He's a downgrade on Milenko who I rate as a fairly handy Shield player.

The bit about D'Arcy is a joke if he's leaving. He shouldn't be able to train with the side in that regards.

under normal circumstances, sure, but since contracts have only been allowed to be signed on the same day training resumed, I would have thought it's inevitable that there would be a couple players who can't move yet (ie the guys going to tasmania). so i'm not sure who would benefit from such a strict policy, particularly since it's just 2km time trial day. (and of course short might not be moving anyway)

two teams don't even coaches yet

When fit, Bird, Siddle and Bell are 100% locks in my opinion.

Meredith is a good prospect, but in the longer form of the game he has been OK, not great.

2019-20: 5 matches, 20 wickets @ 28.35 av - but leaked 4.05 runs per over.

For comparison:

BELL

2019-20: 6 matches, 20 wickets @ 26.55 av (2.8 economy rate)
Career: 22 matches, 83 wickets @ 24.85 av (2.94 economy rate)

Ellis is a good prospect, making his debut late in the season. Whether he can carry that form into 2020-21 is the big question as he gets more exposure and teams put more work into him. Given both Meredith and Bell had injuries last year, Bird is another year older and Tassie generally struggle for depth, having Siddle contracted as a replacement for Sindhu is a huge addition.

Plus the attitude has always been "we want the best 66 players playing every round" by most amongst the states, regardless of where they're playing.

What has happened to Rogers? 46 wickets at 21 from his first 14 matches but seemed to just disappear and go out of favour for others last season.

He had injuries last year. When fit, he is definitely in the 12, but depends on team structure needs. He is good enough to bat at 7 for us and be our 4th bowler.

Has a lot of Luke Butterworth about him.

I think Andrews is probably a better bat than him though
