I've only ever known those black spiders as "black house spiders"- have a look here:

I think they're the same spiders that sneak into the metal tubing of washing lines and live there happily until the temp gets to over 40 deg, at which point they struggle out and hide on the underside of the metal struts, gasping for some cooler air. Then they run all over the place when I try to hang up my washing.
