Mum is still an aide at the school looking after special needs kids mostly iirc, thinking about retirement though soon really getting on with a dicky knee hard to chase after some of these kids.

Yeah I do remember you saying that.

Special needs within a mainstream school, or are we talking more highly special needs/downs etc.

Just a regular country school, was working with kids with stuff like autism a bit but back to just helping troubled kids, usually aboriginal.

That'd be very tough im imagining. Those kids' backgrounds would be nothing like the kids I deal with here at my school.

I'm white/Caucasian looking but nan was indigenous so mum still looks a bit aboriginal, so I reckon that would be a bit of an advantage at least. Far more likely to have a chance of getting them to listen compared to a 'whitey' ;) Some have had parents in prison, been in foster homes. Seems to talk about them a fair bit and not in a negative way so I think she doesn't mind that.

The disabled children I think are the real hard ones, can even physically hurt you.

I just try to find common ground with kids- ie. talk to them about something else other than school/what they're interested in. Make a connection that way.

its not ALWAYS about school and school work.

And yeah just treat them how you would like to be treated, but dont put up with any shit.

Thank christ I've never felt threatened in my job, ever. And thats including Broady.

There was one kid- Gary- lol you always remember the "bad" ones who was pretty ****ing scary. I recall him outside our office calling the AP a campaigner and going off his head. But then i remember also working 1:1 with him one time and he was lovely.

You just have no idea what these kids are going thru, ie at home.
