Re: Next year's draw worries Cats

Extremely disappointed with this draw, extremely disappointed.

This year i do not care who we play, I know we have a team good enough to beat whoever we come up against.

What I am disappointed with is the allocation of home and away games. Given that we played in something like 4/6 biggest drawing games of 2007, with no reason to see why it wouldnt grow last year, why do we not get the right to play collingwood / essendon twice? Why do we have 6 friday night games, all away? Why do we have no home games at the MCG? Considering geelong made a 700k profit off our 1 H&A game against collingwood last year, as premiers we deserve that chance again. How much money did we make the AFL in finals attendances compared to teams like North Melbourne and Hawthorn?

EXTREMELY diappointed!

On a personal note, I am also annoyed to see how many saturday day games we play. To me, AFL should not be having saturday day matches, except for the grand final, due to its clashes with club football. The AFL goes on and on about nurturing grass roots football, yet now if I go and play I will miss watching 1/3 of Geelongs games. This is ridiculous. At least all club competitions have finished by GF day, so its great to have that on a saturday. Saturdays should not be used for AFL footy, so that club football can get more people playing and attending those matches.

I am really pissed off actually!

Joy?? Is that what you call the lead up to 1994 and 1995 GFs?? Joy??

Imo, it was more like a prisoner on death row waiting for their execution. :(

i was probably a bit young and uneducated back in those days. i believed in the football fairy tale in 94, WRONG!! and in 95 we had such a great side and had a blistering season, i was hoping the Carlon team we played midseason that year turned up, WRONG AGAIN!!! Believe me it wasnt joy at games end

94 I knew nothing about footy, but one thing I did know for certain is we were gonna get SMASHED by WC. As for 95... well the Carlton team we actually played midseason still beat us dude!! :D

By only 3 points but they still beat us. I was more hoping the (match fixing? :D) side that played Sydney and St Kilda would turn up!

Re: Official 2008 Fixture

Anyone else think it's odd how we play Port and Freo twice before we play Hawthorn or Bulldogs? Just thought it's an odd way of doing it.
last season we played fremantle, adelaide and brisbane with in an eleven week period whilst playing carlton R2, melbourne R3 and hawthorn R4 only once.
who knows what they're thinking

yeah i remember that three point loss at the OO. i just figured we were so much better heading into the GF from that performance. We were actually in better form than the Blues heading in, AAAHHHHHH.

I should just get over it, i'll be happy with what we've got now. i do remember them being goalless against the saints at waverley half way though the third

Yeah that's true!! 94 we had all the hard, close games, and 95 was the complete opposite. Easy ones and the week off!!! Carlton had an easy prelim against North? :)confused:), but a tough game against Brisbane?

Anyway, I think the best thing is to have at least one hard game. (ie. Collingwood this year).

What's the problem with those games being away games - you still get in with your membership.

No offence to anyone personally, but I don't understand how you could say you were "really pissed off". That's a big statement - I would feel really pissed off if say we played 10 matches interstate or if my car got stoeln while I was at a match or something like that, but not about the draw as it is.

It surely would have been in the AFL's best interest to have bigger drawing teams play each other more often, but apart from that, I don't really see any problems with the draw.

Cook also added

"But in thruth we dont give a sh@t cause we won the premiership. However we would have liked to play essendon twice cause they will be really sh@t next year."
Wouldnt matter who we were playing once or twice on the back of who people think are going to be shit. We are the reigning premiers so we shouldnt worry about that type of thing. And I wouldnt put Essendon as shit , remember everyone picking Kangaroos to finish round the bottom in 2007.

Hate the fixture, the 4 teams i wanna smash Pies, bombers, blues and hawks we play just once. Got heaps of mates who support those sides. Not worried about the difficulty of the draw, we can beat anyone.
Also would like a game at gabba, i love goin to qld for a holiday.

That's awesome. I didn't see any Sunday evening games in there. I can go back to truly celebrating our wins without worrying about work the next day.

Well i can have a guess Brian Cook would be pissed off somewhat with not having ANY home games at the MCG, its about the off-field business, we could potentially draw upwards of 70,000 vs Essendon, but will be lucky to crack 50k vs them in Rnd two, i haven't got a problem with not playing Coll or Ess twice, but this 1 little thing pisses me off, its about the club making money more then anything.

On the other hand its good that we'll be involved in huge games such as vs Collingwood @ MCG, vs Hawthorn @ MCG and we do get decent drawing home games vs Carlton and Richmond, although the Richmond one is a difficult one, if they're going well it could sell-out the Dome, if not then 35-40k will be expected.

Re: Next year's draw worries Cats

One should write into the HUN saturday edition to Dear Andrew....and voice all the concerns, i know it wont mean SHIT but i would love to hear his points of view and xcuses.
Does he ever appear on radio talkback in melbourne !?...not bloody likely !!

I'm relatively pleased with the draw but to miss out on two to three home blockbusters against the pies/bombers...looks like we'll have to wait until SHOWTIME at the G' featuring the cats during finals in 2008...:p:D:thumbsu:

You clearly are insufficiently passionate about your team. I suppose you've forgiven Colbert as well?

Re: Next year's draw worries Cats

this will mark the third season in a row that we have played essendon only once. we havent played collingwood twice in a home and away season since 2003:eek: that's crap. considering it is such a high drawing game you would think it would be in the AFL's best interests.
the tradition continues
geelong vs collingwood 14 times in 13 seasons and just 5 of them geelong home games

its all about being fair and balanced pfffft

Spot on there bingle!

Times we've played other teams from 1997-2007

St.Kilda 19
Kangaroos 18
Melbourne 17
Fremantle 17
Western Bulldogs 17
Port Adelaide 16
Hawthorn 16
Adelaide 16
Brisbane 16
Sydney 16
West Coast 16
Richmond 15
Carlton 15
Essendon 15
Collingwood 12

In a competition that is supposed to be fair and level, how can we have played Collingwood only 12 times in 11 years? Compare that to Collingwood playing Essendon and Carlton 22 times over 11 years. Why is it too, that the four teams we've played the least over the last 11 years are the so called "big 4" teams in Victoria? Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

The AFL don't even pretend any more about it being fair and balanced - they're upfront about it being about revenue. What they're saying is that "We want Collingwood to get into the finals and not only will we give them more games at the MCG than Geelong play at Skilled over TWO SEASONS, BUT we'll ensure that they play a minimum number of games against quality competition." Why do they want Collingwood in the finals? The AFL gets every cent of the finals money, so all that money from selling horse and rolling old ladies goes right into their pockets.

I bet the AFL thinks we made too much money this year and is making efforts to strip some of it away next year.

And that reasoning, my friend, is why Demetriou has decided to pay himself $1 mill per year.
