If we win 6 games, we wont be coming last.

If we blood all those youngsters, we will be coming last.

If Morton kicks 52 (or 60+ like some delusional supporter believes), we wont be coming last.

I'm confused...

Oh, now l get it... its just the usual RT ;)
what do you mean if we blood all those youngsters.
martin is pick 3 big bodied and ready 4 other so called youngsters we drafted this yr are 20 21 21 and 23.i would certainly expect that 4 to get games. we also have gilligan in his second yr as a small rookie, i would hope he does enough for us to at least look at him.
gourdis will be entering his 3rd yr sheesh i hope hes improved enough for us to at least have a look at him.
matt dea is a big kid he certainly has the physical attributes for us to look at him.
griffiths is 199cm and 98kg and by the time the season starts probably bigger he has the size to be given a taste.
geez along with vickery browne post collins connors who have only a handful of games between them i expect to see the lot at some stage even if its only for the odd cameo to give them a taste of senior footy.

a spoon or 12th does it matter. our priority should be giving the kids as many games as is practicable. its not about ladder position its about as quickly as we can finding and developing up to standard afl players.
mate if we finish 10th playing a bunch of kids its a bonus and a win if we finish 16th with a bunch of kids its still a win.

This year there is no priority pick reward for finishing last with less than 4 games, so there is no reason for sides to lose games that they should win. Melbourne finished 16th last year with 4 wins 1.5 wins behind us and 2 wins behind the Dockers, without the PP reward its is quite reasonable that they could have won another 2 games. .

Factually incorrect. There is a priority pick, Melbourne is the only one eligible. Unfortunately if they do only win 4 games, their priority pick will be selection 4 and their first round selction will be pick 6.

I also would argue that because Gold Coast have the first 3 selections and every second selection there after up to pick 15, that TANKING will be even worse this year!

Because (assuming no priority picks) the difference between finishing 16th and say 13th is HUGE!

1. Gold Coast
2. Gold Coast
3. Gold Coast
4. 16th
5. Gold Coast
6. 15th
7. Gold Coast
8. 14th
9. Gold Coast
10. 13th

The difference is MASSIVE. Tanking will be 10 times worse this year. You may not get the first pick in the draft, but for every ladder position you finish up, you go 2 spots further back in the draft, not one! And when the cream is scooped, it becomes even harder.

Who said l dont think about things in my posts?

Oh and ps... if we finish with no more than 4 wins, we still get a draft pick at the start of the second round, unfortunately this year it would be pick 27.

Morton was our leading goalkicker last year with 41.26 from 21 games so quite possible that with a little bit of improvement in conversion he can average an extra 0.5 goals per game more to kick 52 for the season. .

Want to have a wager on that? Quite convinced he'll struggle even more this year and would be lucky to pass the 41 he got this year. ;)

Finally with 15 new players on the list this year and a new coach looking at developing the kids, there is every chance that we'll see at least 8 debutants this year, in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see upto a dozen new faces this year especially with us being allowed to play 2 nominated rookies from the start of the season.

If we debut 8 - 12 blokes, we wont be going well. Trust me. Not saying thats a bad thing, because we need to blood them. But the results in physical win/loss ratios will be awful.

And the retirements, blind freddy can see some blokes are gone before the season even starts. They'd be gone now, but you just cant turn that many blokes over. Like, here you... Troy Simmonds. If he's there next year, l'll eat me arse.

If that is correct then I stand corrected, I was of the belief that the AFL had suspended the PP system while GC & GWS came into the competition.

I still don't believe anyone will tank, Melbourne can't afford another 3-4 win season especially with Bailey in the final year of his contract, if he wants to continue coaching he needs at minimum a 6-8 win season. As for other sides who might qualify for a PP before the second round, what reward is pick 27 for losing 18 or more games?

Want to have a wager on that? Quite convinced he'll struggle even more this year and would be lucky to pass the 41 he got this year. ;)
He has kicked 35 & 41 in the last 2 seasons despite not playing the full season. Not sure how that qualifies as struggling and how he will struggle even more this year. We'll revisit this at seasons end and see what happens.

As I've said I reckon we'll win the spoon so there is every expectation that we're going to struggle. As a result I fully expect plenty of kids being given an opportunity. At the start of the year, I reckon we'll see a side based around players that were already on the list before Hardwick arrived with say Martin Farmer & Webberley as the only new players likely to get a game. After say round 12 I wouldn't be surprised to see guys like Astbury Griffiths Grimes Dea Taylor being given a chance as the focus shifts from those that can't to those who might.

If that is correct then I stand corrected, I was of the belief that the AFL had suspended the PP system while GC & GWS came into the competition. .

Your belief would be misguided. Its accurate. Can you imagine if Demetriou did that, based on his blindless faith in the priority pick. He cant pick and choose when to apply it.

I still don't believe anyone will tank, Melbourne can't afford another 3-4 win season especially with Bailey in the final year of his contract, if he wants to continue coaching he needs at minimum a 6-8 win season. As for other sides who might qualify for a PP before the second round, what reward is pick 27 for losing 18 or more games? .

Pick 4 is still better than pick 6. Pick 6 is still better than pick 8. When your season is over by round 10 - which many of sides will be in - human nature says that you need to salvage something from the season. And fact... pick 4 this year is doubly better than pick 4 last year... because our immediate competitor doesnt get a go for 2 selections.

Top 10 picks are still very handy, why do you think no one gives them up. They only did this year because the draft was shit. There will be loads of tanking this year, dont worry about that.

As for pick 27... yes, its not a pot of gold. But if we're 3-12 through absolute trying... dont think for a second that we wont be doing our best to get that pick 27. Its still an extra pick. Better to get it than not, in a season thats lost anyway.

He has kicked 35 & 41 in the last 2 seasons despite not playing the full season. Not sure how that qualifies as struggling and how he will struggle even more this year. We'll revisit this at seasons end and see what happens..

You're probably right. I just dont think he's good enough to kick 50 in a good side, let alone a poor one. Still happy to chuck some hard earned on that too. You may benefit... could score some British Sterling (although the exchange rate is pretty average!). :)

I think we somewhat agree on the last point. But l still think you fence sit. :D

Didn't Dean bailey receive a contract extension due to his extraordinary coaching record at the end last season?

Dean Bailey likely to sign contract extension before season starts

  • Mark Stevens
  • From: Herald Sun
  • January 13, 2010 12:00AM

DEAN Bailey appears unlikely to enter the season with a contract cloud hanging over his head.

The Melbourne coach, whose three-year deal runs out at the end of this year, is favoured to be rewarded with an extension of either one or two years.
A low-key announcement is expected in the coming weeks as the Demons prepare for a tilt at the NAB Cup.
If Bailey wins an extension, it will leave Fremantle's Mark Harvey as the only coach whose future is undecided beyond this year.
An early extension would kill off any speculation about Bailey's future, with the Dees facing a tough opening three games against Hawthorn, Collingwood and Adelaide.
It would also make sense given it is impossible to judge Bailey's coaching prowess because of the youth policy in his first two years in the job, which have yielded just seven wins.
The Demons have embarked on a strict rebuilding process, stockpiling draft picks, and only this year will the focus swing to ladder position as the club's young talent shows signs of blossoming.
Anything less than six wins would be considered a failure.
But the real rewards of the club's rebuilding push will not come until at least 2011, when it may be ready to push for the top eight

Translated we have been tanking for the last two seasons so it would be unfair to judge him on that.....although in saying that he has been succesfull in the draft targets that we set him. So A contract extension is very appropriate.

Yeah i was actually thinking Buddy to win, but i couldn't stand the thought of Hawthorn supporters if that occured, so i went with Fevolenko. It would be nice Karma indeed if Fev took it out though.

Ladder

Port Adelaide
Injuries and fitness will play a big part of where we finish, we need to win a few games early and that will be hard. Anew game plan together with the enthusiasm of our new players might just get us into the eight remember Essendon has lost LLoyd Lucas and Lovett pace experience and don't forget that Lucas and LLoyd took the no 1 and 2 defenders. Carlton has lost Fev, when we played them they just beat us and he kicked 9,no Nick Stevens, some will say good I say you will see. No Judd for a couple of weeks and my mole tells me Murphy has a few problems. Cox is a real concern for trhe WCE and they lost a bit of depth.
So enter Richmond new gameplan new coach more enthusiastic, a real chancefor the first time since 2001.
Astbury 60 Morton 50 Reiwoldt 49 Nahas 44 Griffiths 35
Mark of the year Rewoldt
Goal of the year Nahas
NAB Rising star 1 Martin 2 Astbury 3 Scully 4 Trengove
Brownlow Martin, Martin to win the brownlow in his first season.
Best and Fairest Richmond 1 Martin 2 Deledio 3 Cotchin 4 Cousins 5 Tambling
Defining moment, We beat Collingwood by a point after they were 72 points up at the 20 minute mark of the 3rd quarter held scoreless after Didaks third goal Nahas 5, Reiwoldt Morton and Astbury 2 Taylor takes a great mark on the boundary plays on and kicks the winning goal. Oh isn't it great to dream.
Actually beating Geelong will be a defining moment that will give us great self belief.
Martin, Astbury, Nason, Griffiths, Grimes, Taylor, Dea, Webberley will all get game time Gilligan, Contin Polak and Roberts coulde all play if we get injuries and the smoky could be Goudis .
There will be improvement from all players who will be out to impress Damo.
