If we were keen on him and he wanted to play for us then we could convince him to go into the PSD and bypass the ND. Doesn't sound like we've had much interest in him up until now but we might look at him now we can nab him for free.
I think he is desperate to get anywhere so depends on what the club wants

If we take Grundy instead of a mid, especially after offloading Gysberts and Morton (mids) + recruiting Dawes and Pedersen (talls), i will be filthy. Jamar has good years left in him and Gawn could become a top ruckman. Still hope for Fitz and Spencer too.

But what if GWS take Wines?

If GWS take Whitfield, Wines and Toumpas then I'd pick Grundy.

I'd still look at an O'Rourke or a Macrae there. Grundy would be nice but we have more than enough capable talls on the list.

To be blunt; I don't rate O'Rourke as a potential elite midfielder.

Macrae could well be, but he's a bit soft at the moment.

Fair enough, and I'll take you at your word, but I think we will go for some sort of midfielder at 4 regardless of who is there. I have a feeling GWS will take at least one tall player with one of those picks.

Boys, i am an 'old boy' of St Pat's College in Ballarat and have seen a lot of footage of Dom Barry, he is a player! I will try and dig out some footage to show you.

Another guy who i rate highly is Nick Rippon, he is an out and out midfield star. Not too sure of whether he is on other clubs radars, but he will be on the Dee's radar. Could make one of useless later picks very useful!!!

Yeah, hopefully we get left with a no brainer in Wines.

Here is the 2012 Herald Sun Shield Grand Final:

Nick Rippon is no: 5, Dom Barry is 17.. Not a good game for Barry, but the class is there.
Other notables: Jake Neade 3, Tanner Smith 4, Michael Close 7 and Martin Gleeson 29, who all look to get picked up.

MFC already has a strong affiliation with St Pat's with the likes of recent players: James and Anthony McDonald, Rory Taggert, Tom McDonald, Lucas Cook all recent draftees...

Disappointing viewing. It was against my old school St.Bernards, who copped a hiding.

- Can play inside or out
- Good user of the ball
- Good kick
- Good accelaration/pace

Wouldn't be against Wines either but I just like O'Rourke.
Too thin.

Sounds like a Pick 88 to me.

All true.

And that's exactly my problem with O'Rouke - he's got nothing that stands out and will make him an elite player, in my opinion.

We don't want to draft a good, well rounded midfielder with pick 4 - we want an elite midfielder.

Wines has the strength and height advantage - and he has the hunger and elite inside game which leaves me with little doubt that he'll be a top midfielder, the fact that he can kick goals is a bonus.

But how do we really know? REALLY know? O'Rourke could have been interviewed and blown them away with his commitment to get better and willingness to learn and do everything asked of him to become that elite player. While I am in the boat of being scared off by skinnier midfielders I don't think us armchair supporters can make the big assumptions like that above.

I'd love Wines but to just say O'Rourke is "good" when so many others think otherwise is drawing a very long bow to be honest.

Fair enough, we don't really know what the players are like - but I will say actions speak louder then words.

I think the attraction of O'Rourke is when you look at everything individually; good kick, fast, can play in and out... but there's something missing IMO.

With Wines; you know he's got the skill, work rate, aggression and size to be a top AFL midfielder.

With O'Rourke; you know he's got the skill.

And it's not drawing a long bow - it's my opinion, it may be wrong but I'll back it for now.

True, and they sound as though they are very different players and it will be down to what the FD think we need. Do they think we need another tough inside ball winner or a guy who will finish off the work of Jones, Viney, Trengove, Sylvia and so forth?

He sounds a bit Morton like but what KM says makes him sound much different (O'Rourke that is), and I've highlighted those aspects that I think make different from a few of our draftees before him.

"Missed most of the 2011 season with a hamstring injury but has come back hard in 2012 and shown us just how good he is. O’Rouke is a very quick, highly skills inside receiver. He has a good balance between inside and outside game and can do both equally well. Maybe not your most natural ball winner but he attacks the ball hard. Very good all rounder who stands out most is his ball use, particularly by foot which is just so good for an inside player. Finds targets consistently by foot, has some hurt factor and finishes beautifully around goal. Decision making ability good and chooses the right target more often than not. Is also a very good athlete and has great pace with the ability to burst away from packs and a nice leap on him. Very good in congestion and has that great decision making ability choosing the right targets even while pressured which is impressive. He is more your inside receiver who benefits from the work of the stronger, ball winning inside midfielders who can accelerate away from the contest and deliver to the targets up the ground by foot and this is more what I see his role as.

I would love Wines, but if he is gone I would love the club to have the balls to take Stringer.Similar injury to Blease who is starting to show why we took him.I understand we will probably go with a safer pick like O'Rourke etc. but the reward with Stringer could be immense.
Happy to support the club which ever way we go though.

KM also ranks him as the 21st or 22nd best player in the draft with his power rankings, his write ups make a pick 70 sound like an absolute gun (no offence to KM, he does a great job but he does focus on the positives)

Very true.

I would be more than happy with Wines, don't get me wrong, and if we get him I'll be happy but I still think an O'Rourke has something to offer also. Just as long as we take a mid I won't be complaining.

this November, the Melbourne Foosball Club will drink the blood of Christ.

Its Wines time at Demon land.

Bring it on.

PSD will be interesting, Toy? Jacobs? Dare I say..... Tippet?

Would we have THAT much money left? Reckon he will somehow still get to Sydney or at least Brisbane though.
