GWS and Gold Coast can only nominate one father son.

That is GWS would need to nominate Darcy Daniher and GC would need to go for Viney.

GWS would take Daniher in a heart beat like any other club would so it would be win win.

GC would then need to nominate Viney - this is more of a gamble - do they really want him? would we mind if he went to them for 2 years (or even a year if we could trade for him because he is home sick :) ) we all know how that works.

That means we would be able to have picks on hand to use.

I really think Melbourne is not in the position to draft kids that will play in a season or so. We really need kids and good kids at that which will make us more of a chance of winning. Another season like this on the field we would most prob go through another coach .. number may drop off ..

like most people I am sick of waiting till next year.

Essendon will have pick 10 in this years draft which means all clubs before them can nominate Daniher, GWS won't have to nominate Daniher knowing that at least one of the Gold Coast, Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs, Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Richmond will most likely nominate him.

Inb4 that was the 09 draft. :(
Haha yes true, I still think if we can pick up 3 quality mids this draft and lets say Viney, Toumpas and Wines to go along with Trengove and Gysberts from 09 along with Jones and Sylvia I think our midfield will be in very good shape for quite a few years.

You are right but just to say it.....Brock, Morton, Scully were all meant to be "the fix"

But you are right we wont get another opportunity to draft 4 players inside the top 25 like this again......oh wait we said that in 08 and 09 too.

Anyway for me something like Toumpas,Mayes, Kennedy, Viney would set us up, but if we get that then maybe offload pick 3-4 for Hogan or Martin ect as 4 mid types is alot

Incorrect, they've changed the father son bidding this year.

They could both nominate Daniher, Essendon take him with their 1st pick, then it goes back around.

They coould then nominate JV

As far as I understand it they've actually changed it so it's the vice versa - only one bid per club.

Should Gold Coast bid, hypothetically, for Daniher, Essendon would then be asked if it wanted to match the bid with its next available pick. If the Bombers did that, the Suns would then be given the opportunity to bid for one of the other players. Those remaining would be offered to GWS, Melbourne and the rest of the clubs, in reverse ladder order.

If we have to use #3 on Viney so be it. Initially I was hoping we would get involved in the Mini Draft but now I'm not too fussed. We have a glaring weakness in the midfield & this is what needs to be addressed in this draft! If there are highly rated mids with leg speed, even better!

Despite then talent available in the mini draft, I don't think we can afford now to wait 12 months before a player can even pull a jumper on

We need players and we need them now

I agree - unless it's Hogan.

Key forwards need time to develop anyway.

We need as many ready to go players now

Unless we bring in a heap of mature recruits from other clubs via FA, trading and later picks, I don't want any project players, skinny kids or kids who can't even pull on a jumper for 12 months

We need to start climbing the ladder, starting next year, or we're seriously f'd

It depends on what the FD think we need.

If they want an aggressive key forward - then they take Hogan, he's better than any key forward in this draft.

If they want mids - we take them this year.

Two top five draft pick mids aren't necessarily going to have a huge impact in their first seasons.

Yes but 22 games is certainly a pretty good grounding

I'm sick of seeing other clubs kids come in and play a full season with no worry.

Aside from Tren and that other fella drafted in the same year, when was the last time our 1st round picks came in and impacted straight away? (Mitch Clark excluded as he was a trade)

Having said that I DO see your point re needs.

Fact is though, we've drafted on "needs" for decades and often passed over "best available"

Really like this Jake Stringer guy, people comparing him to Pavlich, and after watching Pav this year I would blow my nut everyday for the rest of my life to have someone like him running around for us.

People comparing him to Pavlich are silly.

He's a midfielder, he played forward this year and physically monstered some defenders - but he's not a natural key forward like Pavlich.

Still, would be a great get as a mid.

Like Pav wasn't a mid.

Pre busted leg he was ahead of Whitfield, meaning there is no shortage of ability. Screening will tell a story for Stringer, but IMO he is a tasty third tall option at worst.

Saw him play for Bendigo in a VFL game and definitely not a 3rd tall option. He looked physically ready for senior football, but didn't show anything to warrant a top 4 selection. At one stage he was thrown into the middle and looked completely lost.

IMO he's another Josh Caddy. Has the physique to dominate as a junior, but won't be a ball magnet midfielder.

I'd be shocked if he's a top 10 seelction.

He has struggled since returning from injury no doubt, but prior was far more struggling for confidence.

I guess we'll have to wait for testing results to tell where he's at, but if he got to 13 I would fall over myself to pick him.

The thing about Stringer is that he was a lot less physically developed last year, and still dominated as an underage before he broke his leg.

He has the football talent.

We need to pick the best players available, with a preferrence towards players who can step up to AFL level as soon as required. We desperately need some mids with outside pace to help our spread. The advantage is we get Viney and he is ready made.
