I'm not sure what you're point is.
You were supposedly held out of the draft by the concessions.
Yet for a 5th bottom, 5th bottom & 3rd bottom finish you've ended up with 5 x top 13 picks, including the earliest pick that any non-startup club has had in 3 drafts.

Clearly that's far & away more than most clubs have had - Brisbane have had very similar finishes for picks 6, 12 & 12 (and lost two, senior players as well)

The situation Melbourne are actually facing up to, IMHO, is a lot more to do with the end of the (ridiculous) priority pick life-line than anything else. From my POV, that was papering over quite a few cracks.

When we deserved to be getting pick 5 (ie if it happened in any other draft besides 10-11), we were getting pick 12.

That is a massive disadvantage, so I don't see what you're getting at. And we only have picks 4 and 13 because of compensation.

Brisbane had pick 12 because they lost a senior player (Clark). They had pick 5 in '10 and 8 in '11

My point is, "we deserved pick <1/2/3>" is rubbish.
1st/2nd/3rd worst clubs "deserved" the 1st/2nd/3rd best available opportunity in the draft, and you got them.

Just as true to say Essendon "deserved" pick 3, not pick 8.
Etc etc.
EVERY club was disadvantaged.

May as well say we "deserved" to recruit John Worsfold or Tredrea. Things change, shit happens.

If Grundy has the ability to go forward and kick goals as a big guy similar to a Clark or a Tippett, then I'm all for recruiting this man. If he is essentially a ruck only, maybe still recruit but only if we get to keep both picks 3 and 4.

If GWS and GC don't bid on Viney, we should look at trading pick 13 for an established midfielder.

Thoughts on who would be worth that?

Hard to say. Whether people like it or not, you really have to pay over the odds at trade time if you really want your man.

Pick 13 could land us a Wellingham or it could land us a Caddy

I know who I'd be taking out of those 2

I don't want Wellingham. Period.

Caddy would be good for pick 13.

A trade that would never come happen: Matthew Bate and Pick 13 to Bulldogs for Pick 6

Mark Williams wrote and article in the paper once and said that Wellingham is the most underrated player in the league. I'll be honest its partly the reason I would be happy to have him at the club.

I'd also like to take Wellingham. I probably wouldn't want to give up pick 13 considering it is an incredible draft. But you simply can't trumph a proven player who could could realistically become an A grader at our club... and a super draft hasn't stopped us screwing up before. Honestly though, Stef Martin for Wellingham is a good trade for both clubs. We'd probably end up picking Grundy if that were the case, and would based on Matt Rendell and other recruiters, fit straght into our team in the Stef Martin role.

This is my thinking too. I'd be absolutely stoked if it went down that way.

Would be happy with Grundy, but we already have Jamar, Martin, Spencer, Gawn, Fitzpatrick, and Clark

Can you please leave Spencer off that list if we want to get anywhere near the top 8 this bloke should be the back up at Casey.

If we did take Grundy would we develop him as a forward/ruck in the mould of Mitch Clark

It's bullshit is what it is! The FS rules were put in place to benefit clubs that wanted to continue the legacy of a family name at the club, not to screw them over!
Father-son was brought in to keep the tradition of families at clubs alive. Your hardly getting screwed, your just not getting a top5 pick for 20-odd.

Good call. How is it more fair if we get a top-5 player for pick 23 or something? Suck it up and accept that we will use pick 3 on him.

Well lets just assume JV wasn't a father son, he's been tipped by recruiters (on the AFL website) to go around 6-8.

If Gold Coast bid at pick 2 purely just to force our hand at pick 3, then we are getting screwed. If GC naturally bid at 2 because they were always going to take him, that's fine.

I'm ambivalent. If we use pick 3, so be it. Pick 20-odd would be nice, but whatever will be will be

I think that there's some form of angst seeing teams like Geelong take Generational Players (GAJ / Scarlett) with pick 500, we finally get a WORTHY F/S selection (...no, Chris Johnson wasn't worthy :D ) and we may have to use a very, very low pick

Everyone wants to maximise their teams chances

Getting Viney in 2nd round wouldn't exactly hurt, if you know what I mean
