Good player but surely that's too great a risk at 4?

It depends on where the club rate him - I'm of the opinion that we pick players based on how WE rate them, rather then how other clubs/people rate them.

Only we know how we can develop them and what role they can play for us.

Grundy is a ruck.

Heard that if Wines is gone the Dees might look at Josh Simpson @ pick 4.

Wont happen.

Regardless of what some might think, it would be way too much of a reach.

And with all due respect, given your recent drafting history, I dare say Melbourne might be going for a bit of a conservative approach this year.

Wouldn't want him on our senior list. We have too many slow mids already.

Played more as a defender in the last couple of years. What you'd be getting is a complete professional. He wins or runs a place in our 3km time trial every year. He does a lot of the unnoticed team stuff. He can lock down on an opponent and, for his height, he's pretty OK overhead. In his first year or two, he was known for racking up touches but has moved away from that. He can make the occasional error and isn't the most explosive runner but you get a willing contest from him every time.

He's a slight upgrade on Joel Macdonald IMO. Whether or not you should give a senior list spot for him is probably debateable. He wouldn't be out of place on a senior list (could have got another year with us if we weren't OK for options at HBF) but rookie listing seems more likely.

This. No more smokies, please.

A conservative approach netted us Scully over Martin.

We pick the player we think is the best at that pick, not who the industry rates as the best at that pick.

I'm not saying that's Simpson - it's just a rumor.

Sounds exactly what Neeld is looking for... and exactly like 4-5 other players on our list.

We took a risk at 11 for Gysberts, could have gotten Talia.

Thanks for the insight.

Can he kick though? If so, can definitely see him in the pocket Round 1 next year if he is as good as you described.

But mate, if I recall correctly, he was pretty highly touted then.

Lucas Cook. Could have had Jack Darling or Atley.

Darling is a classic example of not taking a risk on a player.

Cook, would have fitted very well into Bailey's vision of a key forward - not so for Neeld.

In general, I think clubs who take a risk on a player because of 'talent' do well.

Clubs that reach for a player based on 'needs' - like we did with Gys and Cook; don't do so well.

Simpson is no doubt the former, not that I'm advocating picking him up @ 4 ... it's certainly interesting though.

What we don't need is another reach with a draft pick. Lucas Cook was a reach. Jordan Gysberts was a reach. Both are gone. Take the best player available for ****s sake.

With all due respect, who are any of us to say what our recruiting/coaching staff think is a reach?

The two above were reaches and, from what I know, Simpson would be a heck of a reach at Pick #4. It's just my opinion, something you seem to have on most players in the draft anyway so I have no idea why you would say that comment above.

Interesting that Grundy is slipping. As for Simpson, it looks dead set that Wines will be available at pick 4 and I cant see us not taking him so its all irrelevant. Emma Quayle usually gets this stuff right and GWS will probably not need Grundy if they can get Tippet instead

Yeah, fair call.

I think it'd be a reach as well; based on his output - not on his talent... but if the club rates him at that pick then why wouldn't we pick him?

That's all I meant, and was basing that simply on what I've heard is a possibility.

His kicking is probably best described as "adequate". Fairly neat and tidy most of the time although not overly penetrative. You wouldn't be recruiting him for his kicking, if that's what you are asking.

Fair enough, i would be interested to see who we went for if he wasnt there...O’Rourke maybe?

If Wines was already gone, more than likely that Toumpas would still be available as it's hard to see GWS taking 3 midfielders. I think we would settle for Toumpas. :p
