I would have really liked Deledio, but the asking price would probably have been irresponsible to pay.

If we can get Tuohy, then he and Thurlow should add the run and kicking skill we need coming out of defence.

Also the lack of interest in Motlop might be the rocket he needs to pull his finger out. The talent is clearly there, but he's not the hot property he thought he was, and if he doesn't have something close to a career best season in 2017, his next contract will be going down not up, regardless of where he ends up.

They didnt just swap a first rounder for him. They essentially got bugger all for him due to a swap of picks.
Doing things the right way is getting the best value possible. That's why the Hawks do trading the right way. They got a first-round pick for Jed Anderson last year. They get Tom Mitchell for pick 14 this year. This is after a slew of bargains in the late 00's/early '10s that helped them build their premiership sides. I don't know why Geelong can't negotiate these sorts of deals too.

Some evidence or examples of such instances, not just one or two over the last 9 years but a seriously deep pattern.
Don't hold your breath. I've been waiting for a few to get back to me with an answer to the same question.

Still no talk about Lonergan and Bartel's contracts. I wonder where they are at.

The more I've thought about this, the more I think we should go for broke with trading this year's picks away for WHE, Lids and Tuohy, on the proviso we can fit them in the salary cap and do not lose a best 22 player. The only reason we should deviate from this strategy is if we have a player in mind in the draft where we need the early picks, and that player could be up and running in the next season or two. We are in the window and we went this strategy last season and should stick to it this off-season. I would be looking at Stewart in the draft, and maybe House in the rookie draft.

We now have a stack of rookie spots available, which can bring in some youth for little cost.

Now that mayne is done i would imagine kersten gets done quickly. Hopefully we get a better deal than the dogs because we are ready and hamling is still deciding.

I still expect deledio will try and get to us but not fussed if he chooses dogs dont want to overpay. Definitely want tuohy who is younget and will be cheaper. I hope we can trade in a replacement kpf and some more outside run.

Be interesting to see where vardy ends up if the richmond thing falls through.

Jay Clark on mmm saying while Caddy is happy at Cats, he hasn't ruled out going to Richmond. Geelong are firmly against it though. Also said that Lids, to Doggies is unlikely and that he still wants to come to Geelong.
Jay tends to have good geelong contacts, not as good as gullan but not the worst.

Hold firm geelong don't bend to richmond's demands.

Eagles is a terrible choice for him they only want people for 12 months while nicnat out then after that he will be behind nicnat lycett kennedy darling and mcgovern. Surely he tries to find another club.
What do we care? Get a pick back, he gets to hopefully receive some better luck on injuries and moves on

So now Mayne is done, Freo get 23 for it. 23 to Hawks for Hill.

Leaves 34 to us for Kersto yes?

So we hold

34, 38 and 40? plus 54 I think after compo picks come into play.

Take your pick or picks Richmond.

People need to stop obsessing over Hawthorn, if we are to get that Premiership we should be much more worried about GWS and the Bulldogs.

The Hawthorn era officially ended today with Sam Mitchell leaving. Tom Mitchell is a good player but he won't replace Mitchell and they were in decline before that.

It's really quite amazing. Geelong gave up pick 16 for Henderson. Hawthorn give up 14 for Tom Mitchell.

One was a guy who had looked thoroughly mediocre at Carlton for years; the other a proven midfield gun and finals performer.
Crikey, he was so good he pushed Harry Taylor from the Centre Half Back position and made it his own for the season, not beaten once. For a mediocre player we did very well out of that deal.

if it's #34, that's the same selection we used to draft him in the first place ..

The best thing about the Hawks trading is the same as the best thing about Geelong's: they know what they want and they go out and get it.
  • They needed a ruckman in 2013, they traded out their first rounder and Shane Savage. I would say overs for the player they got, but he was worth it to them. It's why the Ty Vickery pickup could be looked at as a great one in a couple of years: he's there because he fills multiple holes and I would say is the best of what's available.
  • Jed Anderson worked out well for them, but it really only balanced the ledger from pick 19 for Jono O'Rourke the year before
  • We paid pick 38 for a 'broken down' Hamish McIntosh in 2012, they paid pick 21 and 43 for a 'broken down' Brian Lake and pick 27. Difference? Luck only.
  • So sure, it looks like they got a bargain in Tom Mitchell, but in a year's time, he could have had just an OK season and suddenly pick 16 for a near All Australian key defender looks pretty good.
You can't pick and choose whether you value a trade before or after the fact.
