But he is swinging fresh air punches.

I have no problem with Rucci doing an AFTER season review, when this supposed ''fall from glory'' either happens or doesnt happen, and then he can ask the hard questions.

Here's the truth:

I'd rather have a fall from glory than no glory to fall from.

Now scuttle off back to the Port board.

What fall from glory would that be???? Last year we were tipped to finish in the bottom 8 (closer to the bottom than the top) and we finished minor premiers but lost two out of three finals. This year we were expected to do well but NOBODY expected us to do as well as we did in the first 15 weeks. Injuries have played a crucial part in our last 6 weeks form slump - no team is capable of keeping winning when they lose so many KPP.

Fact is, we are still in the game... with TWO guaranteed home finals no matter what. So, unless your team - who were premiers less than two years ago - is actually IN the finals, they don't have a chance of winning anything other than a chook raffle at the local. Enjoy your last week of footy.:D

well I accidently went the rag today - another 2 poorly written attacks on the AFC

when will it stop, maybe we can send an emila to Triggy asking all Crows supporters to boycott the newspaper, I just wish I could read a local newspaper again :(. One day we will get decent journalism.

Have to say that todays articles are VERY average. He really is starting to become a desperate man, taking pot shots at the whole bet thing. Bet your life if Thommo had gone down to Alberton Rucci would have run with something like "Crows laugh it up during disaster". The man is charmed to be a football writer in a one paper town - its really like using parliamentary priviledge to accuse people as criminals.

We need to forget about hammering Rucci and start asking questions at the top end of the Advertiser hierachy - yes he's Chief Football writer but he doesnt run the paper, someone else (is the guy's name Mansell??) has overall veto I am sure - why does he let this drivel, alienating over 50% of their readers, continue?

You have answered your own question. I'm still holding faith that Triggy and Bill will fix it

Ummm what is the "singing canaries" saga. It not something that is coming immediately to my mind.

Anyone care to elaborate

It was either last year or 04 not sure exactly when Rucci was bragging on about how he had a source within the AFC who he called the "singing canaries"

Apparently he was being taken for a ride.

because people still buy it

the curse of the one paper town

Definitely 04 - back in the Ayres death throes at the club.

doesn't the Age have a national paper (similar to the australian)

it has fairly good football and would be a good alternative to the stupid tiser ?

The Age is part of the Fairfax group, which obviously has no paper in SA.

Not sure that it has a national version of The Age

The Age is Fairfax. The Advertiser (and Herald Sun) are Murdoch (Newscorp). Fairfax also have The Sydney Morning Herald but they don't have a national paper

Bugger - We really need another newspaper option

maybe if we start bugging them for one :(

We wonder the same about 5DoubleCrow, but I don't see you dribbling on about the KG and Cornes alienation of Port supporters.

Different argument. This argument is about the fact that 5AA provides about 70% coverage to us and less to Port. Basic market share split and they're responding to it.

This arrogance really worries me.

In a democracy football club leaders do not "fix" newspaper stories to suit themselves.

(Edit: can't spell)

The Age has increased its distribution, especially for the Saturday and Sunday editions, in SA although the Sunday edition suffers slightly, I think, on the football front because the earlier deadline doesn't allow it to include all of Saturday's football news. They don't run a national edition.

The Sunday Age and even the Sunday Herald Sun, both available in Adelaide, have it all over the Tiser and Mail for football coverage.

As for the Advertiser - I don't think Mansell has a clue, quite honestly. He has persisted with dumbing the paper down, and the circulation continues to decline. I believe that most people who do buy the Advertiser simply buy it out of habit, or something to read on the bus or whatever; very few people actually buy it because they want or need to read what's in it. Because of that (I believe) the Advertiser's circulation runs on a knife edge as more and more people wake up to the fact that it's actually a complete waste of money and they could actually have an extra $250 a year (weekdays) in their pockets.

As for Rucci vs editorial direction - and I don't want to turn this into another Rucci argument - but - I think Mansell probably likes the way Rucci is writing, and encourages more of it, because he thinks it's "controversial". His problem is, or will be, not that outraged Crows supporters will boycott the Rag, but simply that people will get bored with reading that sort of rubbish and are hanging out for some genuine football journalism.

I suspect that when Mansell goes down to the football department at the Rag he says "I want more Bob Francis in your writing" instead of "I want more Patrick Smith / Matt Price / Chip LeGrande / whoever".

And he is wrong.

Exactly. I don't think Port supporters have a lot to complain about in terms of how much coverage they get on 5AA, I'm sure it is more than is justified by pure percentage of supporter base and of course it is driven to some extent by the relative performances of the two teams.

But that is not the point in any case. What 5AA (KG & Cornes) do NOT do, is go out of their way to put a negative distortion on stories about Port.

You need to learn to recognise a running gag when you see one. :)

What our club does do, and very well in my view, is express its contempt for certain sections of the football media without coming across as whingers.

What they (Triggy and Bill :) ) do is simply point out the facts whenever it is needed. This is far more effective (and emabarrassing for the media in question) than simply complaining.
