And we didn't lose Hall because of that deal.
The point is we could have had better selections overall.

Watts, Krueger and Hudson

OR

Watts, Schmidt/Gayfer, Krueger and Mott??????

I think its no brainder which one would be better.

Gayfer? Now you're just being silly. He was available to us with our 2nd and 3rd selections. What makes you think he's a better KPP than Stevens?

Not upset that we traded for Scott Stevens, as the guy can play. Our problem was not trading some of our fringe midfielders for mid-round draft picks.

No qualms about our 1st & 3rd picks, but Krueger over Hall would appear strange on the surface. Will watch the progress of both with interest.

I'm prepared to give Kreuger the benefit of the doubt. Clearly, given that the AFC had made it quite obvious they were interested in Hall, there was something that made them pick Krueger over Hall.

Kreuger has time to develop, good luck to the local boy, sounds like he is also handy around the ground. Let's wait and see before vilifying.

The only thing that gives some insight as to why they have gone down the path of Kreuger is that in some of the phantom drafts he was touted as a draft choice for a ruckman/ CHB with the emphasis on being a tough defender who can take a good grab.

Our ruck division managed to turn Biglands into a fine ruckman, let's hope the same can be done with Krueger. By the sounds of it he has good around-the-ground skills, which is excellent.

Apparantly he takes a good grab, which we desperately need from our rucks.

This is true.

Maybe they decided Krueger was a much better mark than Hall, offered more around-the-ground and it was only his ruckwork that was lacking, and could be worked on by our ruck unit?

Draft Day - DT sez...

14. Fergus Watts: (SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS 21/09/85 197cm 86kgs)

I'm over the fookin' moon! Massive win there.

31. Freddy Krueger: (GLENELG (SANFL) 27/10/83 195cm 91kgs)

Jeez... what the hell were we thinking compared to:

Brent Hall SOUTH FREMANTLE (WAFL) 7/01/86 198cm 95kgs

This Krueger better turn out to be the next Shaun Rehn because we've really dropped the ball here. Now unless the Crows recruiting management got a hands-off from Hall's agent for whatever reason, be it money or his boy not wanting to move to SA, we've completely ****ed up.

The Sandgroper is 2 and a bit years younger, taller and heavier... erm?!!! Cripes.

58. Benjamin Hudson: (WERRIBEE 24/02/79)

Gee a 25 year old hack from the VFL! Place your bets lads! Will he play...

0-3 AFL games
4-10 AFL games
11-20 AFL games

...before we delist him?

DT - Whilst some of our picks appear a bit strange on the surface, we can't truely judge the outcome for a few years yet. I remember when supporters were happy at picking up Angwin a few year back, yet we all know how that turned out. ie. Probably don't know the full story why we passed on Hall, so let's watch how he performs compared to Krueger. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised.

Nicknames

Krueger is obviously going to get called Freddy.

How about toe-sucker for Watts?

Can't think of anything intersting apart from Huddo for Hudson (rather boring really).

dyertribe: as we have all been saying, there must be a reason we drafted Krueger when Hall was available, given the Crows had been quite open about their desire for Hall. So maybe you should take that into consideration befoe badmouthing.

Secondly, Hudson has been excellent in the VFL, and may be the ready-to-play back-up we need. No one had heard of him before the draft, so obviously Adelaide have done their research, we seem to have a good history with late draft picks, so we may have ourselves a pretty serviceable player.

Can you not read? Jesus christ!

I said precisely that!:

"Now unless the Crows recruiting management got a hands-off from Hall's agent for whatever reason, be it money or his boy not wanting to move to SA, we've completely ****ed up."

Do you just argue or take potshots for the hell of it?

Haha. Get used to it. I was just surprised they took someone older than me.

Speaking of Hudson. I don't know if we can be too critical of this pick-up. It was pick 58 after all. I said all along we should have kept Marsh for depth. Instead we've just picked up another mediocre mature age ruckman. No loss, no gain.

I'm stoked about getting Watts. Got an awesome name for starters but atfer watching him in the u/18 championships GF when he took some awesome marks and kicked 4-5 goals I've been interested.

Krueger is an unknown talent but please everyone give him a go. Seriously the recruting staff have watched *****loads more under age footy than us and would have a far better idea than us. They would have spoken to Hall and musn't have been impressed or else he didn't want to come to SA because a club wouldn't publicly state they are interested and then not take him when presented with a golden opportunity.

As for Hudson, at first I was like WTF? but having thought about he mightn't be too bad. Almost 200cm and 100kg is a good size and have just read that he played basketball as a junior which means his athleticism can't be all that bad. Is ready made for AFL so is basically what we were lookign for.

Anyway we've still got a pick in the pre-season draft plus a couple more rrokie selections to prepare for the future.

But man am I excited by Fergus Watts. 197cm KPP are almost unheard of and that mark he took in the U/18 GF was awesome when running back with the flight of the ball and marking overhead. With tutorage under Carey and with more muscle on his frame he could be a massive player.

As for nicknames, Kane.
Freddy as you said for Krueger.
I say 'Prince' for Watts coz he's gonna be the next King. :D ;) :D
And so therefore theres only one nickname left for HUdson - Junior

So in the draft period we have picked up Freddie Prince Junior. :D

From the AFC site:

Adelaide goes tall

With the club’s first selection- pick 14 overall – Adelaide chose 18-year-old Fergus Watts, who is a key forward from the Sandringham Dragons. He is highly regarded for his marking ability and attack on the footy.

Josh Krueger, from SANFL club Glenelg was Adelaide’s next recruit at 31, with the third and final player chosen 24-year-old Ben Hudson, who played with Werribee in the VFL.

Krueger is capable of playing at both ends of the ground in addition to doing some relief work in the ruck.

Hudson took up the game around four years ago, having played basketball as a junior. At 200 centimetres and with genuine size, he will provide the club with a ready made back-up ruckman.

Club recruiting manager James Fantasia thought all three new arrivals were capable of playing a role in 2004.

“When you’re looking in the tall-man department, they take a bit of time so we’ve gone for a few slightly more mature blokes. But they’re still young in footy terms,” Fantasia said.

“The good thing is all three are ready to play. They’re not that far back in terms of development that they couldn’t stand up next year.”

“We really focused in on getting some tall players into our list. That was our genuine need.”

We've met our most of our objectives - we needed KKP's/ruckmen and all three blokes could play those roles. We needed at least two ruckmen - one young and one mature.

In regards to Hudson at least we didnt get a young ruckman who will want to run off home ASAP like Gilligan and Angwin. At his age he should settle in better and give it a real go.

It also looks like we have a genuine gun forward. I'd say we've ticked most of the boxes and we've done OK. Krueger's height and the fact he hasnt played seniors at the Bays this year are my two main concerns. Hopefully we can develop him for a key defensive post over 2004.

IMO, we can't lose or be worse off! ;)

SB, the only good thing about FPJ is SMG! ;)

Personally I prefer toe-sucker to Prince. :p

As much as Sunny was a great player, I was thinking of someone else who would be great to play with! ;)

Rather than having foot-in-mouth, you would have shoe-in-mouth ... & a very upset spicegirl...

The more I've thought about this one, the more I've warmed to it.

Hudson has only played footy for a brief time and is obviously on the way up. His immediate role will be the one that Marsh used to do ever so badly - fill in if either of the two main ruckmen were unavailable.

If we retained Marsh we were guaranteed of a sh[thouse performance whenever he played for the Crows - he's proven that over a number of years. Hudson just might do the replacement bit quite adequately and if he does that puts him a looooong way in front of Marsh.

I'm warming to it.
