Adelaide will make a song and dance about it, they have to to save face. But I suspect the deal is essentially done bar a bit of theatrics to keep thjeir fans happy. They aren't Essendon.
I think you're 100% correct.

It pretty much fits in with what Dwayne Russell has hinted on Adelaide radio that the deal between Adelaide and Geelong was already done. He was so convinced that his source was 100% correct that he was prepared to name him off-air.

I can't remember verbatim, but said something along the lines that Geelong did not want to comprise their pay structure so they came to a deal with Adelaide that will be signed off at the start of trade week.

1. You're naive if you don't think Patrick is thinking as a Geelong player now. He doesn't want to hurt his new team. While he wouldn't want for Adelaide to get nothing, he doesn't want Geelong to be gutted. He isn't going to put Adelaide above himself like you suggest. You're naive on this.

2. The decision to match is completely Adelaide's decision which you will chose not to do.

3. Your clubs handling of this so far has been vile. The lies already are starting. Some professionalism would be good. "Crows before hoes" that's horrible. You want him to have respect but act like immature twats.

4. No I don't dislike Adelaide. I prefer Adelaide to Port as I've spent a lot of time in SA and that's my preference. Your club is not well respected due to the constant scandals, proven or not. It's a personal view but also a widely held view. Something isn't right there. Only Brisbane has a bigger exodus. Your club was widely respected but now there are too many stains.

5. You shouldn't prepare anything as he has made it clear where he wants to go. You are purely after these things to pressure the player. Dangerfield had to agree to a trade. If you had any concern or respect for anyone else but yourself you would say we will deal with Geelong and work this out. Not open for sale, all bidders welcome.
You must have head your head under a rock , our club has handled the Dangerfield issue with complete professionalism all year ....how many other clubs have found out pre finals and managed the situation through end of year with no leaks and provide an environment where danger could still perform - full credit to danger as well

All of this in a year when coach and mentor dies in tragic circumstance

Prett sure every club respects us and what we've done

I have great respect for your great club but the way you guys on here are carrying on reeks of entitlement .... I think we will ask for 2 1sr rounders and a first choice player but don't think we will receive it

Maybe you should think about an alternative view to your current so you don't get disappointed either

Correct.
I got told the deal was all but agreed upon by both clubs during the QF weekend, no idea what the deal is of course but word coming from those connected was "all but done".

Dwayne Russell seems to suggest it's Geelong's first pick this year and the 2016 first round pick.

I wasn't being serious about Cockatoo. I'm just mocking Cats fans in here that think we won't be matching, and that a deal hasn't already been brokered. 2 first rounders and a player (who I don't know at this stage - Gregson, Murdoch, Gore?).
A deal might have been brokered... but there are no players added on to any picks

And will Geelong be acting in Dangerfield's best interest? I would hope so. Not organising a reasonable trade would be very ordinary, sending him to another club would be a low-act by your club - wouldn't it? I would say that all of the posters on BF saying that Geelong will hang AFC out to dry, are so far off base they need to check themselves. No way a deal doesn't get done early. It would be traitorous of Geelong to leave PD hanging on the threat of PSD and a club like Carlton or Brisbane jumping into the mix.

Again with this?

Lets walk through it together ...

... what you have to realize about Free Agency (restricted or not) is that it's primary reason for existence is to allow players more freedom to decide where they play.
PD has complete freedom to choose Geelong - he has exercised that "primary" reason for FA (restricted or not)

By matching the Cats offer, you are removing Paddy's freedom to exercise that right and demanding that he move on your terms.
No one is removing anyone's rights by matching. We aren't demanding that he move on our terms, we are exercising OUR rights. PD has freedom to choose the club he wants to move to - he doesn't have the freedom to demand what the terms of that movement are.

This by it's nature is restricting.
Finally, I was waiting for someone to pick up on the restricted bit.

Say what you like about within the rules or the cats being responsible for what happens next, but you started the process by removing his initial right to move freely in order to serve your own purposes.
No, PD started the process by saying he wanted to move under RFA, now Geelong and Adelaide are responsible for what happens next. By all means feel you are free as a club to not trade for Patrick. Send him to the PSD, and move on with your trading. I love that you AFC as the ones that are trying to "serve our own purposes" and Geelong as some social do-gooder that just wants PD to be happy. ALL clubs serve their own purposes, even yours.

Obviously the crows have done nothing yet, but I'm hearing a lot of defence of something that is indefensible. Sure it's within the rules, but still smells a bit
.

I couldn't imagine what you must think of a club like ours. We develop a player to be the best and fairest at our club, respect his decision to move home for family reasons. Treat him with nothing but open-arms and decency. Then want to get something in return when he leaves. What a bunch off selfish bastards. Try and step back and look at it from a more neutral pov. Ask anyone who is not involved if they think PD to Geelong for this years first round and next years first round is "indefensible". It doesn't smell at all.
Ok, admittedly lazy post (sorry about that), but my point was more about the inherent problem with 'restricted free' anything, and the frustration of reading over and over again about how Adelaide wouldn't be stopping PD from moving anywhere. I get that in his situation there are two, no, three ways for him to get where he wants to go, but it's not enough to say that Adelaide's happy for him to go and then remove the simplest method of him doing that.

I guess I feel like there is little to be gained from a business ethics point of view in matching.

Don't match and Adelaide can quite rightly say that they had did the best they could to look after a favorite son, while receiving some small amount of compensation in the process. Also, they can more positively move on by spending the trade and FA period using the available cap space.

Match, and it is impossible to defend the accusation that Adelaide just treated an important member of their club as nothing more than a commodity because he did something they didn't want him to.

Not trying to paint Adelaide as anything; they've done nothing other than talk (mostly to their fans by the sounds of it) so far. Just discussing the vibe (Mabo?) of the whole thing.

They are pretty special over there mate...
It is absolutely all about the inferiority complex most SA people have over Victoria.
It is a little sad to be honest.
Spot on... they have a monster chip on their shoulders about Victoria

And I can say this with absolute fact as I live with one

For all we know they may have. The 800k is the rumour based on suggestions it will be in line with Selwood's salary, but that could be a smokescreen. Only a couple of weeks to wait till we know more i guess.

If it ends up being a trade, then i hope it is only for 1 first rounder. if it is for 2 then GFC botched the deal.

But i maintain if it ends in a trade RFA will be seriously rewritten by the AFLPA and the other clubs will only have Adelaide to blame for abusing it.
I don't understand the last sentence. The matching option was written into RFA for this exact circumstance. A club losing a player that they are desperate to keep and more than happy to pay the same or more. How is us matching abusing the system. Can you describe an example of a club matching that you wouldn't consider to be abusing the system. Don't forget that the player needs to be on the top 10 paid players, so it's specifically designed to effect higher end players.

Edit - sorry Mods, just read the warning. Not sure if this is strictly on topic.

Keep dreaming

Won't be matched cats will out price you.
I sincerely hope that we do not try to do that.

First of all, it compromises our ability to keep our list together. Tippett and Franklin are the best-known examples, and I do not want that to happen at Geelong.

Far worse, though, is that if it didn't actually work and Adelaide were still able to match, we would needlessly be cutting hundreds of thousands of dollars out of our own cap. Imagine that we were going to offer him 800k/year, but then decide to go for 1.3m/year to price Adelaide out. What if Adelaide actually match the deal in question and we go to the trade table anyway? We trade for Danger, sure, but then we'd have to pay him an extra 500k on top of what we would have just paid him in the first place.

Don't forget, Adelaide can make any offer they like within the salary cap and not be bound by reality because Dangerfield won't take it anyway. They could offer ludicrous money just to force Geelong's hand, it doesn't really matter. Whatever offer we make on the other hand, we will have to follow-through with.

How is using the system that's there in the way it was intended to be used somehow equivalent to "abusing" it?

That will do, we'll play nice and you can keep the other 3.
So in the fairness of reasoned discussion, can you please explain to me, and ill happily play the dumb one here, how exactly a player like Cocky, but anyone could be used at this point, that has recently re-signed with Geelong (and presumably their action of re-signing indicates a willingness and happiness to remain at GFC) will now magically become a willing tradable asset in this alleged mega trade for PD.

Picks I could see - but that is for another post. Happy to hear any reasonable explanation. Discuss.

Bent over? Two first rounders is us being bent over.
Just so I understand, AFC receiving 2 x RD1 picks is being bent over.

Just so we now have a relative scale of value, or bent overness in your case, what is 2 x Rd1 picks for GAJ class as?

Why?
Cats got 2 LATE first rounders for a bloke the same age, who had won 2 flags, 1 Brownlow, 3 in a row MVPs, multiple All Australians and was regarded as one of the greatest players ever.
But you expect what is effectively double that for a bloke who until last night only had a few All Australians to his name?
Danger is a good player, bloody good player, but he certainly isn't a once in a generation Champion.
Wake up champ.
That was horrific as was Hawks staring at a 10 year, $12m contract hoping to be in a position to negotiate better than the pick 19 available through compo. In a trade situation, the departing club always gets unders fir uncontracted players with a single destination in mind. But you're referring to AFL compo, which isn't relevant if we match. You'll either get him for nothing or a decent sized discount against his value.

He also said in his speech last night he hopes a fair TRADE gets done
Happy to be corrected, but I though the language was arrangement rather than trade. And given the way PD has carefully chosen his words thus far, I doubt he would be that careless now.

On other fronts, please feel free to keep posting here. Robust discussion is great and you are a central part to that currently. :thumbsu:

I will however suggest that MOCKING posts can be taken out of context easily and it would be unfortunate should your privileges be removed for a something as trivial as a mocking post. Mocking can become trolling very easily.

Don't pretend to care about the freedom of movement when we are clearly gonna trade him to geelong anyway......this is just based on your club wanting him for cheap and possibly not getting your way

What's the run down?
I haven't watched it yet but this article has some quotes

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...545860400?sv=785a682ec871d77f1d115b6b91a1f928

Amongst them:

“There is a negotiation going on behind closed doors but even I’m not privy to those exact conversations,” Scott told Channel Seven’s Game Day on Sunday.
“My understanding is that it’s pretty amicable. I know it’s in a lot of people’s interests to make out as if it’s not.”
