Melbourne is the only real risk, and even then Connors will try to scare them off with he won't do medicals with any club, won't talk to them, will live in Moggs and not Melb if they draft him etc. If we can get a pick higher than Melbourne's it is game over for Adelaide.

Now Smith has nominated us I would be trying to do with GC what I suggested earlier, trade pick 9 and our 2016 first rounder for pick 3 and Smith. This means Adelaide cant demand any picks because we dont have any and they know if they match they get nothing as we will get him at pick 3 in the ND, so they will have to accept the compo. If they do then we get to keep pick 3 for ourselves in the draft and if not we get Danger there anyway.

I would give Adelaide a chance to be reasonable first (i.e. accept pick 9 + small change and not any of this 2 first rounders + gregson crap) because I believe in giving everyone a chance to do the right thing. But given Danger is basically choosing us so that his kids can be raised around their grandparents, and is spurning clubs who are offering him twice as much money (so his motives are fair enough) if they are going to try and block him moving I think that would be a disgrace. So I would give them a chance and if they won't be reasonable then try and do alternate deals and get him in the draft anyway.
The only problem I see with this is we would then have to burn pick 3 for Danger in the draft, instead of pick 9.

In the end I think it would too smart by 1/2.

No need for the 'tude.

As for the shouty bit, they don't necessarily all count. Adelaide has to demonstrate they can match. They can demonstrate that by saying "if Danger stays we will delist all of these guys".
Currently contracted players, and recently uncontracted players can re-sign and adjust contracts at any time of the year. I would expect that we have intentionally held off contracts with the 8 or so players, just so we have the ability to match any large offer you may make. With the full intention of trading Danger to you, and never having to pay it. Once trade week is done, the 8 or so guys will be signed up, and we'll have the money we would have used for Danger for other players.

It's purely a ploy to have the space if you offer a large $$ figure.

In effect GCS are getting a first rounder for Smith.....+ maybe an unwanted player...

We wouldn't burn anything because Adelaide wouldn't match in that scenario.....they get the compo, and Danger is at Geelong....

i think however the afl will still need to estimate their likely cost to you when working out your ability to pay danger. so you can't say they are all on minimum wage on their next contract if their existing one is 350k.

I'm with Seeds here.

Just don't understand why people feel the need to resort to personal insults. Debates and discussions are most productive when done so factually, not emotionally.

Naive I know, but still.

Anyhow, I digress. Carry on :)
Totally support you + Seeds. Not naïve at all Cataholic, people forget about good manners + treating one another with respect. When people resort to personal insults it simply shows their ignorance. Seems it's always the same people, too. It's unacceptable + unnecessary, especially as we're all part of the AFL family. Plus it's distressing when it occurs between Geelong posters.

Ablett was a year older and statistically speaking, at the end of season 2010, he was averaging 21.8 disposals per game. Dangerfield currently averages very similar numbers right across the entire board and although he is not a Brownlow medalist & 2 x B&F winner, Dangerfield just won his teams B&F.

It's also worth noting, Ablett has never accumulated anymore than 133 clearances & 313 contested possessions in a season. Dangerfield smashed that this season by gathering 165 clearances & 350 contested possessions, the two main statistics the Geelong football club are absolutely deplorable in.

He's not the next Ablett Junior, but he's got as much chance to reach similar heights as anyone else in the league (Fyfe).
Their supporters should have every right to demand as much compo as what Geelong gained from losing Ablett.
The Crows supporters have every right to demand it, but it doesn't mean they will get it + other RFA of high calibre have gone to teams of their choice with only compo. So I ask again, why should break the existing precedence?

Why do we need pick 3???

Melb WILL not take Dangerfield worst case scenario. Their coach ruled it out. They only want players that want them. I wish I had the quote about him dropping Dangerfield!!! They will pay him a fortune if he selects them but if he says no then they WILL NOT BE PICKING HIM.

We really need to play hardball. It's a swap of pick 9 and the compo + then something small as an absolute maximum.

It better for them than "just the compo" but any way we give up two 1st rd picks is a loss. Plain and simple

Rather play Murdoch off the halfback line - let him use his speed and break the lines.
I wouldn't. It's a mantra repeated endlessly on here. To me unless Murdoch is up forward he offers shit. And he's had a lot of chances. On the rare occasion when he does 'break the lines' he doesn't look where he kicks it anyway. At least in the forward line he can use his goal sense.

I think our fans are getting carried away with all the trade talk going on.

You should be asking:
Will he be in our best 22?
Who spot would he take?
What position will he play?

Nah, Ade will just take the 14. We'll be left with pick 3.
I think by doing the proposed deal with GC, we are spitting in Adelaide's face.

If we did that, the likelihood of them saying "Stuff it Danger, go to the Draft", becomes almost a certainly.

we would end up burning pick 3 on Paddy, and have made a long-standing enemy in Adelaide.

Watch the trade raids come for year after year. :(

I agree with you.

His goal sense, pace and raking kick is far more valuable as a means of moving the ball quickly through our forward line.

Not convinced Adelaide wouldn't stand on principle then, and send Danger to the draft.

and lose him for nothing? That would amount to incompetence. They won't do that.

I think that thread might have another 900+ pages and even more arguments than this one!

Hutchy: Dangerfield is a Cats player. Other clubs backed right off a while ago after they realised he didn't want to go anywhere else. Geelong are being "nice" about the deal.
Excellent! As a few of us have said, no club would want Dangerfield if he didn't want to be there + he'd walk to Geelong in 2017 as a FA. Let's hope that the Crows can be realistic about this deal. Sure they'd like maximum recompense for Danger, but realistically they need to accept the compo from the AFL.

There is NO way in hell the crows will force Danger into the draft if we hold pick 3. If they did that they will lose Danger for NOTHING, nada zilch zippo, a big fat 0. If they do not match they will get a compo pick from the AFL which will be pick 14.

If you were a crow, would you prefer pick 14 or NOTHING????????????

Besides WC I can't think of another club that has had any decent compo from a star player.
