Read this article the other day. If you skip pass the foreward it has some great thoughts on drafting. Article from the States but it applies for here too IMO.

Reminded me how smart the Dees were for taking a guy like Brock McLean a few years ago who proved he could play when it mattered.

Interesting.

I'm a believer in his philosopy. There sometimes is too much science and not enough common sense.

I hope we apply that rationale to this years draft.

Great article. Remember Essendon traded that draft pick with the expressed purpose of drafting Brock Mclean. Brock spent the summer that year training with Essendon and made quite an impression. Melbourne decimated our plans a couple of weeks before the draft by flagging there intentions of drafting McLean with pick 5. Some clubs (including Collingwood's Noel Judkins) rated Brock at number 1 while other recruiters had him out of the top 10. Imagine if we were able to snare McLean and Stanton from that draft. Maybe we can have more luck this year.

Does anyone think Paddy ryder can be turned into a defensive tall a little like Michael Johnson from Freo. It would give us alot more flexibility come draft day, free us to play Hille, Laycock and Ryder if all fit and release Bradley and possibly McPhee. Just thinking outside the square a bit.

I didn't think TAC Cup players were allowed to train with clubs prior to the National Draft?

He trained with the club as part of the AIS program. The next year Essendon hosted Sam Robertson. I believe either Addam Maric or Trent Cotchin may experience a bit of preseason training at Windy Hill this year but that is unconfirmed at present.

Im not confident he's as agile as Johnson. Id prefer him in his customary role as a ruckman while he's developing, with a small role in our forward line.

I tell you what just watching the way Johnson moves and disposes of the ball by foot I thought f--- this guy reminds me of Ryder.

Johnson hasn’t got Paddy’s tap work though.;)

He's not a ruckman though...Paddy will be a great tap ruckman...you can see it even in his early games...just cant compete yet with the bigger more seasoned bodies, but give him time and we could have a Polly Farmer on our hands...

Me thinks this would be a very bad idea.

You can't turn a ruckman into a backman.

I would go as far to say that if we had nabbed Mclean then we would be a top 4 side with a fit Lloyd.

To me he's already in the top 20 players in the league and always seems to perform well in the pressure games.

that's pushing it, we still have a lot of holes in the team

Just wondering, what is the minimum and maximum of how much rookies a club can have after the rookie draft?

For all clubs excluding Sydney and Brisbane, it's a minimum of four rookies and a maximum of six.

There is also the non-compulsory mature aged rookie, which is just the one player.

The number of rookies each team can have is dictated by how many external veterans list players they have. Each team can have a combination of six, with a max of two on the external vets list. For example, last year we had Hird on the external vets list and five rookies.
