To be fair to Wells, he can't predict injuries. No one could have predicted a broken leg (Brown), busted shoulders (Brown and Smedts), or knee reconstructions (Menzel and Thurlow). That's four out of five years where the first pick had major injuries. Can't blame him or the club for that.
Totally agree, especially on Mitch Brown who just needed a bit more luck IMO. If you have busted shoulders early on as a key position player, surely it has to impact your ability to put on the size you really need.

Smedts is the one pick I'd really like back. Didn't really give off the impression of being the hardest worker on earth or perhaps the sharpest tool in the shed (please don't read this, Mrs Smedts).

The good news is we also drafted Isaac Smith in that round, who has won two games for us off his own boot :D

Wouldn't have been Ablett for Duncan straight swap, I reckon the suns may have offered up pick 2, so Ablett & pick 2 for Duncan and maybe pick 34.

Still a no for me, however I will ask, Gold Coast also have picks 19,22 and 24, if say they were willing to part with picks 2,19 and Ablett for Duncan and pick 34, would anyone be happy with that?
What price team unity, I guess?

GC stand to lose everything. Their request is stupid. They know. Geelong knows it.

If no trade is done, Ablett retires and ends up at Geelong anyway in an ambassador type role for the club. That alone will get bums on seats. The little champ doing a bit of MC work in the Pivots etc.

Whichever way this falls, Geelong should win either on the field or off.

Reading the GC board there’s going to be some serious melting when we trade players like Lang and GHS, they really do have the expectation that we have to give up an established player for a 34 year old player.

Someone over there really needs to bring that sense of entitlement and expectation down a couple of notches.

Yep - As Clayton said it will be part of a larger deal. I reckon that Suns have their eyes on a few players from a few clubs and we need to help them get that deal done (be it through players or picks) and then that will facilitate Ablett coming back to us.

It cost them nothing to get him (thr AFL made sure of that) and they have always carried on like he was rightfully theirs... of course they have a sense of entitlement for him

Wouldn't want to lose Duncan at any cost, next captain of the club. Also whats the point of having Gaz come in to play forward if we have nobody decent to deliver it to him, Duncan is the best kick at the club.
Im not sure I could pull that trigger.
2 reasons -

Duncan is in hand. Picks 2 and 19 - while a fantastic chance to good - are much like the 2 x R1 Comps we got for GAJ.
Smedts and Caddy.

Ill just leave that there for a moment...

So we get GAJ back, Smedts, Caddy and lose Duncan and 34. Not to mention what the morale of the club becomes by losing a player well entrenched and hapyp on and off the field at GFC.

Now, I realise it wont be Caddy and Smedts literally - but you get the point.

This x 1000. Thanks Partridge
A very simple point that oft is a point if blame and clearly no basis.

We were taking some risks with our draft picks anyway back then,Smedts came with hip problems and Brown really was a bit of an unknown as to what to expect after having a huge growth spurt just before being drafted which probable change his football for ever.

Caddy ended up being Parfitt, so that kinda turned out ok.....

I feel bad even losing Lang if it came to that. I understand you have to give something, but at the end of the day Ablett left us simply for money, and part of me just wants Geelong to have nothing to do with it short of a very shitty pick like Mitchell to West Coast.

Ablett made his bed, and Geelong should not have to bend over backwards to accomodate him, favourite son or not.

Ancient history.

Mitchell btw wasn't looking to leave Hawthorn. It came out of the blue and smacked him in the face.

Could you imagine the look on Mitch Duncan's face?

I could be a leader, and potentially the next captain, in a stable Victorian club where playing in September is the norm, or I could hack out the rest of my days in a directionless, coachless rabble where the crowd doesn't care and I can safely book my trip to Bali on September 1st.

That is a hard choice.

What I want: Ablett at a fair price, I.e. R3 pick. Otherwise walk away.

What 99% of geelong supporters want: Ablett at a fair price, I.e. R3 pick. Otherwise walk away.

What GC want: a price heavily in their favour in order to make a stand

What geelong will give up: close to what GC want coz we are the nice guys and must get Ablett at all costs. My prediction: Lang plus motlop compo (maybe a late pick back). So effectively Lang and motlop for a 34 year old with 15 games left. But we get more memberships so club thinks it's a win.
