To think I was mocked for saying this back in May.

Ether he will be with the GFC in 2018 or nobody at all.
Will be the latter then IMO. We are not trading anything of value for a 33yo and even if gc decide to trade him for a 4th rounder like hawthorn did with mitchell there is the small matter of his 1mil salary and the afl's ability to block a trade if we dont pay 100% of it (which we wont). It was a stupid decision on his part to sign the 3 year deal if he wants back here he will need to retire and forgo the money and return here in an off field role.

Don't think the AFL would let him "retire" only to come back to Geelong.
I think he means off field. If he retires they can stop him renominating for the draft and playing again but they cant stop him getting involved at geelong in an off field role-which i presume geelong would do if they see commercial value in it for them.

Not sure about this, but can't they just delist him, rendering the contract useless and we can sign him on 200kish a year?

If they delist him they have to pay out his entire 2018 contract in their 2017 cap and they would be stupid to do that. The only way the contract gets voided is if he retires. I think if he tried to sign here at 200k the afl would be fairly likely to try and block it. Gaz will have to retire if he wants out of there early.

Very underrated poster Stan the Caddy. He's like the Joel Corey of the board. Quiet, professional and underrated.
Really? Coming out and calling someone a tosser is professional and underrated, well in my book it's a cowards way sitting behind the safety of a keyboard taking cheap shots at people by name calling. There were a few posters that replied to my post in a professional way but he wasn't one of them.

Really at this stage wouldn't they let him go for pick 90 . He gets to go home all
Smiles . They have a million extra on their salary cap to chase another ready made player win win I would have thought . Do they really want to pay they much for an aging player who really would rather be some where else . Massive opportunity cost having that much in such a short term investment in a year they are not going to win the premiership in

The AFL won't block any trade if the other 3 parties all agree to it. It's a myth.

Do you not see the irony in any of this?

I've never had the slightest problem with him leaving. The money was ridiculous and anyone with a brain would take it. The only annoyance for me was the customary "I thought long and hard / took a long time to make up my mind" nonsense that's trotted out (to be fair, this is certainly not limited to Ablett).

More practically, he turns 33 in May.
Agree with all of that but players are advised and given scrolls. Sad truth of modern society is litigants are rife. Gaz always a geelong hero in my eyes

True, but I still believe that people need to take responsibility for their own actions whether they have been given advice or not.

As far as GAJ goes, as I've said before I'll forgive but I don't think that I'll ever forget.

It's not technically right that gcfc would have to pay out if his contract. If he want to get out of the contract and both parties agree they can simply terminate the contract by agreement and the he would be free to sign whatever contract with whomever picks his up

The problem is both contracts (the old one and the new one) would need to be lodged with the afl who have the power to block either or both. Given they have been paying ablett since 2011 and they want him up there to help get afl in the papers up there there is every chance they would do that. This is not an issue if he retires however.

Agreed that the AFL can block it - but do they really want the downside negative press also with a franchise that has gone to shit being overshadowed by the the Ablett family issues (not taking a shot a them but the media will harp on this all year)

If they let him go, the GCS gets the SC space back to become more competitive, the bad press goes away and GAJ becomes someone elses issue.

The AFL have gotten their $$ worth. Time to cut bait on him and move on IMO.

Disagree they will only not block it IMO if they think the arbitration tribunal will overturn it and thats only likely if he is gettimg his full 2018 gc salary either from us or them. Otherwise the integrity of salary cap argument will cover them. I reckon ablett knows this is why he os threatening to retire-he is hoping the afl will want to avoid bad press and that the threat of it is enough for them to let him be traded where he wants in 12 mths.

Can't see the AFL taking that step. In fact, I can't readily recall them ever taking that type of action. At least not overtly.

In any event, it would be mindless of the GC to not extract something worthwhile should Ablett want out. Frankly, I'd prefer we put our efforts into development rather than the recruitment an aging player past his best.
