If Motlop leaves, That will gain a 1st rounder you'd have to assume especially if he has a great season.

To be used on Smith of course.

It would be madness to use a first rounds on Gazza Jnr
To be honest, GWS won't need a first round. It would be excess.

Was he or was he being shopped?
and no one wanted to give up anything for him which says it all. GWS will be interested as they will need to replace Johnson but Gold Coast will need some inside grunt if Ablett retires/traded and obviously Motlop does not possess an inkling of inside grunt.

It doesn't say anything except he wasn't wanted while contracted,he's a free agent at the end of this season his manager will already be fielding offers for his services in 2018.It will be a minor miracle if we can hold on to him,and an even bigger miracle if the club gets a good deal for him.
Prepare yourself Bobby this may not end well.

The sooner he's gone, the better the football club will be in the long term.
Having said that, I'll be livered if Stephen Wells does not negotiate a good deal because Motlop still wins games off his own boot and that's worth something to teams in contention.
For a club like Geelong these days, who only have a small portion of genuine hard nuts and contested ball winning types . . . he's a liability, as we have witnessed in the 2014 & 2016 final series.

Motlop will have a great year as his contract is up. The difference between a good year and a bad year is a few hundred thousand bucks. The question is what will someone offer him and will Geelong even try to match?

Success might also be a factor. If Geelong can land some big fish in the offseason and do well this year, he might be tempted to stay around.

It's fairly harsh to pick and choose when someone is and isn't a liability.

Can't recall much of 2014 but last year, he was good in one final, poor in the other.

Yes of course it would be far better if he was good in both but it is harsh to call someone a poor finals player (last year at least) on the basis of a 50-50 record.

I think (I could be wrong) Daz was referring to the risk that even if gc and the Cats are agreeable, there may be input from others that will mean we pay overs. I would be surprised if they didn't have a hand in stalling this years trade after O'meara and Prestia exited. For the ego's at the AFL, us getting him back would signal a massive failure for their expansion plans. So even if we can do a deal, we may end up wasting picks or time trying to get it done. Think Delidio/Caddy this year...
Garbage. First the AFL were going to stop the trade altogether and now they're going to allow it but make us pay overs... I've heard it all now.

Not saying that. I'm saying that they may wish to block the trade entirely, while we waste time trying to get it done. GC money is AFL money after all. Also not saying it will happen, but seriously, do you think the AFL doesn't have a say in how GC is run?
