Yeah to boot off all his mates around his age, to then turn around and get him back is a really average look (if it happens)

I was all for it over the last trade period.. for the right price

Now I'm concerned we get too carried away when we probably shouldn't entertain the thought
Er, there is a SIGNIFICANT difference in skill and ability between him and his mates.

Adding to that, there isn't a club in the land that wouldn't take him if he was available to them. This is not true for Bartel.

Need to take the sentimentality smokescreen out of the way and understand that we will get an elite midfield forward into our team who can be considered as one of the top 10 players of all time when he retires.

Johnson, Chapman, Kelly and Bartel are not even in the same league as Ablet jr

I must admit, this has given me hope that he is coming back. The house is vacant (see no furniture). I suspect he's renting for twelve months so it's easier to come back! I'll call it now, it's happening!!!! Imagine him, Selwood, Danger in the midfield for 2018. How much would you give away for that? Ablett at 70 or 80% is still better than a vast majority, even if our plan was for him to be available just for one year.

On purely football ability, agree.

The problem is, he'll turn 34 early in the season IF it happens, and that's IF he gets through 2017 unscathed. He's only played 35 of 66 games in the last three seasons, so while he was incredibly durable for most of his career, that's not necessarily the case now.

He won't put his body on the line for Eade, it won't surprise me if he doesn't play much this year either so he pisses them off and it's easier for them to move him on. I think he could play at 35. Same rules don't seem to apply for Ablett clan.

I agree with that, but he also hasn't been able to get on the park for most of the last 2 years, so I am going to remain cautious at best for a bit

I of course may change if he stays healthy this year

Not saying that. I'm saying that they may wish to block the trade entirely, while we waste time trying to get it done. GC money is AFL money after all. Also not saying it will happen, but seriously, do you think the AFL doesn't have a say in how GC is run?
Ok, so let's say that they even want to block this trade, what's their reason going to be? Cos I'm yet to hear a good one...

And to answer your question, of course the AFL have a say in how the club is run but we're talking about one specific situation and no, I don't believe that the AFL tell the Suns who they can trade and who they can't. They would have a say in things that are much broader and much more important to the clubs sustainability than just one player, no matter how good he is. If they didn't like certain decisions that were made at the club they would simply just sack the people that are making those decisions so that they didn't have to worry about micro managing the hell out of the place.

So I'll state this again... If all 3 parties agree on a trade then the AFL can't and won't stand in the way of it. And in all honesty, GAJ potentially leaving the Suns with 1 year to go on his contract is the least of the AFL's problems when it comes to ensuring the long term sustainability of the Suns.

Face. To save it. Like they did with Essendon.
