I'm hoping someone in the recruiting team realizes we could use some key defenders and not use all our picks on semi-mature players...

And midfielders

And midfielders

Calm down, we have Ross, Dunnel, Curran, Ledger, Newnes all trying to get a weekly gig, and I would be stunned and amazed if we didn't also take some mids in the draft. Mids are the "easiest" players to get in a short time frame.

I imagine at least 2 of our picks will be used on mids. As well as a couple of our rookie picks. (If we end up with any).

Be happy to take a KPP with 25 and then 3 mids.

6 players off main list....3 added on.

we will definitely want to use 25,26,41 & 44 - upgrade Dunell with 77.

Still 2 to be delisted IMO...Raph & CJ are the best bets.

Thought I may as well update the list ...

Judgey, could up also bold or something the amount of picks we currently HAVE to use to fill spaces (so I THINK it's the five picks up to 77? Am I right?)

We discussed this in the list management thread and I don't think anyone's really sure yet, some people think CJ might get the chop if one more has to go. Dunell is definitely being upgraded so something has to give whether it be a player or draft pick.

FYI (doesn't change anything for us given we have multiple veterans, but it is a factor for other clubs)

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/7415/newsid/150579/default.aspx

General manager of list management Tim Harrington “The magic number for clubs is 44 players at your disposal, whether that’s 40 on your primary list and four rookies or you can choose to have 39 on your primary list and five rookies. Or you can have 38 and six,”

“The AFL also dropped the requirement to have ‘X’ amount of rookies, so you can choose whether to have rookies or not."

“If you do only have 39 on your primary list and five rookies, then one of those rookies can become your nominated rookie at the start of the year, who can play senior footy all year.

“There is no veterans list anymore, so the maximum number on your primary list is 40 and you can still have veterans, but the veteran criteria has changed … which is 10 years service to your club. The age limit of 30 years has been dropped and you can have as many veterans as you’d like on your primary list, who fulfill that category of 10 years service and you get roughly $130,000 per player outside of your cap.

“So they become primary listed players, instead of being on the veterans list, so that’s the fundamental change.”

Wow..that changes things up!!

Although he doesn't mention NSW Rookie exemptions.

ATM we have 34 Listed
5 Rookie Listed
1 NSW Rookie Listed

so...we take 4 at the Draft & upgrade Sam......39 Listed
we take 1 player in Rookie Draft................5 Listed
(1 of these players is the nominated Rookie - Tommy?)

there is our 44.

Sounds like we will be have 39 & 5 then, with Curren to be nominated rookie. Unless my maths is way out of whack and I've messed up!! That's assuming we take 1 pick in Rookie Draft.

Someone might point out what the obvious need is for Curren at round 1 (he can be elevated for LTI or at the half way point of the season). If the salary cap is there, why wouldn't the club use 40 players on the senior list rather than another rookie?

More flexibility maybe? Doesn't have to be Curren. If say we picked up Cook or Cockie in rookie draft it gives us that option if they have awesome preseason. Can't see us using pick 44 on either of them!

What about pick 77 (our 5th pick? Dunny can be upgraded with any pick). Or getting a delisted FA?

I guess they could try a state league full back and make him the nominated rookie if he works out during pre-season?

But my issue is that if they think player X can add something to the list, then for the sake of a few extra dollars why allow another club to grab them with a shitty pick?

I'd hope they don't want to pick up another 18yo that they weren't prepared to give a 2 year contract to. We have enough young players in development. Curren has been at the club 2 years and they still don't want to give him a main list spot! And we just flicked Woz.

Just seems like another way to frig around with the Salary cap for mine.
If you are tight you use rookies. If not you take them in the draft.

Effect. Clubs flying close to the edge will miss out on the better Rookies, as others using less of their cap will take them before the rookie draft.
So the Barlow type players are more likely to be picked in a club that is lacking big names, while those with full caps will take the more way out picks as rookies

TEN PLAYERS gone in one year! That's about a QUARTER of our list! WOW! That is pretty incredible. If it's not a rebuild, it's a minor extension to the house!

And with (apparently) the potential for even more to come!

TEN PLAYERS gone in one year! That's about a QUARTER of our list! WOW! That is pretty incredible. If it's not a rebuild, it's a minor extension to the house!

And with (apparently) the potential for even more to come!

Add it to the 11 from last year!! 21 in two years is massive!

StKilda have 3 players who were on the list for the 2000 season.
5 from 2001
7 from 2002
7 from 2003
8 from 2004
9 from 2005
10 from 2006
13 from 2007
17 from 2008
20 from 2009
20 from 2010
24 from 2011

Most of the players on our list were not there for the 2 grand finals.

That's the biggest issue for me. A VAST majority of those players have NEVER played finals. That is a bit of a problem. It's a reason I really want us to get in the top 6 for 2013 - not because I think we'll win it next year (I mean, we might, but hey), but because I want those young uns to go through that experience with some veterans who have been there before.

A VAST majority of those players have NEVER played finals.

Very valid point. The VFL Elimination Final was quite high intensity, and Box Hill played some good footy (I think a few of their players ended up playing AFL finals). We need the guys to get alot tighter as a team and start consistently winning VFL finals. This won't fully prepare them for AFL finals, but does show the step up in tempo for any final (and whether they can adapt to the sudden increase in pressure).

That is one more (albeit rather tiny) plus for Lee. He's played finals in the WAFL and in the Foxtel.
