Re: N.Ablett having some time away

If he does retire, it's no big loss. It's not like Scarlett or Mooney or Ablett is leaving.

Hawkins steps in, few other young guys get a shot, like Lonergan and even maybe McKenna.

If he does go, the Cats would cope very comfortably, although it would be a shame.

And Cats fans, expect everyone to jump over this like it's the end of the world, and the empire is crashing down.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Did anyone read in The Herald Sun today he commented that Ablett should "go away and overdose"??? Real class act.
a) It's the Herald sun. Who knows what he actually said.

b) He lost his daughter. Full stop. I think a few harsh words in Ablett's direction, however misguided or untrue, are both to be expected and understandable.

Until you've been through it, don't judge.

Who knows what is true, but judging from what I saw of him on the news recently, I wouldnt be at all surprised If he did say that.

I've said my opinion a few times on this matter, so I'll leave it.

I have been through losing someone close to me through drug use.

I take the line that losing someone to drugs is not a tragedy, it's a shame, but not a tragedy. People know what they are getting into, they realise the potential risks and the consequences. If they go ahead with it anyway, then they must reap what they sow.

That girl was old enough to make her own decisions, she wasn't force fed those drugs, I'm not sure Ablett was even on drugs at the time, he was just present.

The harsh words toward Ablett are harsh, outdated and unneccesary, she has only herself to blame for her death.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Caught me off-guard, but somehow not all that surprising, really. I think on some level something like this was always a distinct possibility (and would continue to be for his entire career) but given how far he'd come this past 18 months or so (in his development and the way he presented himself on and off the field - certainly more comfortable in both senses), it's hard not to be a little taken aback by it currently.

That said, I think just as he's (seemingly) followed in his father's footsteps and walked away from the game, there's no reason why he couldn't (at least, I'm hoping) continue to 'follow' his father and change his mind and return...

I guess we wait it out to see what comes of it during December.

I think his wrong somehow pales!

Wow, how is this difficult to understand. His daughter DIED! Therefore he will forever hate Gary. Probably unfairly so, but certainly understandable. Cut him some slack.
Dude, seriously.. we have been over this issue time and time again. This thread is about Nathan... I think we should stick to the topic of his "time out".

I read that reported "quote" in the paper today. Couldnt believe what I was reading.. thought it was harsh... so I thought I would post it.. but it was meant to be a comment in passing. Sure he may not have said it or it could have been taken out of context.. BUT if he did say it, surely you can admit it is out of line.

Anyway, just my opinion. Sorry for accidently turning this thread back into that topic.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

It's always a shame when you see people with talent decide to up and do something else.

I might be mistaken but I'm sure I read somewhere this year about his religious beliefs and something about taking time off at some stage for that. If someone can correct me or shed some light on this please do!!

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

I don't reckon he'll be such a big loss if he decides to go. Had an ordinary season in 2007 and didn't do a lot in the GF. In fact Bomber indicated that had the GF been two weeks later Tomahawk would have been in.

If his heart isn't 100% in it let him get on with his life doing whatever.

Ordinary year? Compared to many other players it might have been but I would have thought it was a season that suggested he was finally coming to terms with AFL footy. 30-odd goals was a solid return in most eyes.

In fact Bomber indicated that had the GF been two weeks later Tomahawk would have been in.
But it wasn't so it's a moot point.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

If indeed this story is true i find it pretty ****ing selfish of him. He comes to the club and we look after him. Play him in games when his form has been shit. Keep him away from the media, and what does he do? After 3 years packs up his bags and pisses off? Give me a break.

If he was so serious about leaving he should have done the club justice and quit before the draft. Atleast then we would have been able to get something of value in the draft.

Ablett is back in late december (After the draft) I tell you what he better bloody want to stay at the club or we will have missed the chance to get a replacement player.

Personally i don't care either way if he comes back or not anymore. Why should we be taking the risk on a player who has the potential to pack up his bags and leave at anytime. Heck id rather give Tomma 22 games next year. Atleast we know he will still be in the blue and white in 10 years time.

I really feel sorry for Nathan. he has been through a lot with his father. I just wish he would make up his mind on what he is going to do, and stop messing the club around.

Totally agree, the father has taken no responsibility, and almost enjoys the publicity. There is no need for him to vent everytime ablett is mentioned. There is responsibility in this for him, and all he has done is cry and drag the issue on and on, yes his daughter died, but the frequency of the reporting makes it sound like yesterday.

As for N. he was not commited to the cause, and the pressure was for him to reach the next level. He has huge ability but no passion. If he put in a monster pre season he could be anything, and this was reflected on the field. He needs to believe in himself and really want this. 07 was the year where gary pushed his ability, and the results were testament to his ability. As for nathan, let's see him cart bricks all day to pay the bills, and that may influence when he comes back.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Another kid with all the talent in the world but for whatever the reason he is unable to fulfill it. Whatever makes him happy.

I think Hawkins would have jumped ahead of him anyway. Maybe Nathan couldn't hack the competition and saw the writing on the wall.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

just wondering what he did before he was drafted, cause he would have been old enough to have to have a job and not be straight out of school. In any case you job shouldn't really define you and if he leads a much happier doing something else best of luck too him.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

I just got home and this came as a bit of a shock to me to see this on the herald sun website. The club and public have always known he has struggled with the media side of footy but i never thought he would just walk about from the game. If i can remember wasnt there a rumour half way through the season that he was going to walk away from footy and become a priest, i think it was on 3AW?

Don't take this the wrong way, because i'm not having a go at you.

It may be understandable to a point. But for mine that point should have ended years ago. It has been nearly 8 years, and this fellow is still full of poison about the whole thing. I don't expect him to be inviting Gary Ablett around for a meal any time soon, but surely he has to let go of this bile that he has for his own good. When people like yourself say it's understandable, you're basically justifying this guy carrying around the hatred for the rest of his life. And that won't do him, or his family, any good at all.

Damn straight. No offence to the father but his daughter had a choice to take those drugs and then to go and say that Ablett should take a drug overdose himself and f*** off that just pissed me off. If the fathers going to talk about Ablett snr like that then i hope that guy gets hit by a car:mad:

I wouldn't go that far, but the man has other kids, surely his attitude can't be helping them one little bit, particularly as they too would be sorrowful after the loss of a sister.
