Re: N.Ablett having some time away

If indeed this story is true i find it pretty ****ing selfish of him. He comes to the club and we look after him. Play him in games when his form has been shit. Keep him away from the media, and what does he do? After 3 years packs up his bags and pisses off? Give me a break.
Sorry Rizzo you are usually spot on but I have to disagree with you on this one. Wasn't he part of the team that just won a premiership for the club? We may still have won the flag without him but his 34 goals were very handy. I think he's been good for the club as much as the club has been good for him.

If he was so serious about leaving he should have done the club justice and quit before the draft. At least then we would have been able to get something of value in the draft.
Maybe he didn't tell the club before the draft because he hadn't reached a decision yet? We still have the rookie draft and pre-season draft to come so we can still draft someone or take Grima back to replace him in the list.

Nathan's break will give Hawkins and other guys more opportunities to compete for a spot in the team. I'd describe his action as unselfish because he knew he couldn't give total dedication to the job at hand.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

I wouldn't go that far, but the man has other kids, surely his attitude can't be helping them one little bit, particularly as they too would be sorrowful after the loss of a sister.
Things like this usually occur in certain classes of people. They are unable to step back and reflect on issues, rather judging everything as "Ive been hard done by". It's clear that while Ablett was in the wrong by using, so was Alisha who was in a situation to say no and didnt, repetatively it seems.

In the case of Nathan, let him go. While I would gladly open my arms to have someone of his "potential" in the team, if he doesnt want to be there, let him go and bum around at whatever makes him feel happy. The only certainty is at one point in his life, he WILL look back and say "I didnt give it my best".

That may be true, but if we had given tomma those games I'm sure we would have got a similar return. He has been "good", but thats about all. There were times this year he hasn't deserved his spot however.

Maybe he didn't tell the club before the draft because he hadn't reached a decision yet? We still have the rookie draft and pre-season draft to come so we can still draft someone or take Grima back to replace him in the list.

According to the article we can expect his decision after those drafts. So if he decides to leave we will be left high and dry.

I guess it depends the way you look at it re selfishness. Surely being a professional footballer wouldn't be hard to dedicate to. One look at the players rooms + Salary would be enough for me. Its not like he works outside of the club.

Yeh, and i hope one of them makes nathan realise he won't get a free ride like he has this year (to an extent)

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

just wondering what he did before he was drafted, cause he would have been old enough to have to have a job and not be straight out of school. In any case you job shouldn't really define you and if he leads a much happier doing something else best of luck too him.
I think he had set up a chippys apprenticeship.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Nathan basically avoided all the post GF celebrations didnt he? Not just the drunk ones. I completely agree his talent combined with the eye of the tiger would be great but it seems he's just not all there at top level. I hope he develops a white line fever mindset and throws everything into his footy but I dont believe it will happen.

Regardless either way he was a piece of a premiership team and we want these pieces no matter what ... except shannon :thumbsu:

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

Did anyone read in The Herald Sun today he commented that Ablett should "go away and overdose"??? Real class act.

As for Nathan, it's disappointing to see, but to be honest I'm not all that surprised about it. It's just his whole body language out on the field... sometimes he seems a bit disinterested (imo). He certainly doesnt share the same passion for footy his brother has.

Hopefully, he will come back "bigger, better and stronger than ever" and have a great career at the GFC. All the best Nath. :):thumbsu:
He also said the same thing on Nine news on Thursday night. Just came home from work with some fish and chips, turned the TV on and nearly choked on a chip when he said that. If he wants some sympathy, that's not the way to go about it. I feel sorry for the rest of his family, but not for him. It may just be me, but I'd rather grieve in private than seek media attention every time Gary speaks in public.

As for Nathan, I agree with the majority. If he doesn't want to be there, replace him with someone who does. Hawkins, McKenna, even Lonergan could play there. It's not like he's not irreplacable.

Shit, Horan's dad is a richmond supporter. But noone told me he had a mental disability. Thanks for showing us Mr Horan
What a cowardly, disgusting thing to say. An RFC supporter was banned earlier in this thread for making an equally stupid comment. Mods show that you are consistent! I came on to say that the article during the week wouldn't have helped Nathans cause, Gary Ablett would best serve his children by allowing them to live their own lives free from his self-obsession.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

I always got the impression that Nathan was a slightly "reluctant" AFL footballer. If he thinks that he needs time away from the game (a month, a year, whatever) then he should take it. Geelong are in the fortunate position of having a number of other quality players who can fill his role in the team so the impact of him taking some time off shouldn't be too great. Geelong fans (and others) who enjoyed watching him play will no doubt miss him.

All I have to say is I TOLD YOU SO. The kid was never going to make it. His name and talent got him so far but when it came to the crunch... he walks. We can assume that considering it his 4th season at the club in '08, he was told to pick up the pace, get fit, get strong and work your backside off basically. To hard? It seems so.
What happened to the "he's gonna be a star", "I have no doubt he will be a champion"... blah, blah, blah...

Sorry to get up on the high horse but I've seen this coming for a long, long time and have been told I'm wrong for 2 years or so. SUCK IT UP all you people that said I was wrong. He doesn't have what it takes. You can't force someone to be a professional athlete... simple. He was carried all year in '07 and struggled to perform in the highest scoring and most dominant team we have seen for a long time.

Maybe I should go and drag out posts from the past to shove in your faces, like many of you love to do so much with the "i told you so" attached. Pfft.. nah, no point. You all know who you are... and you know that I was always right. :D

Pickers is on SEN now, 9-12 and bomber on after 10.
Thanks!

I refuse to believe this is true, funny how the Herald Sun is the ONLY paper reporting that he's going to/thinking about retiring (that I've seen - other papers might have jumped on the "Nath retiring bandwagon.")
I need to hear it from someone from the club...
Ablett's manager denies retirement talk.

KNOB! for a 21 yo holding down a key position in his first full season on AFL footy, nath did a tremendous job. those 2 goals late in the 2nd term of the grannie effectively put us over the line...and gave us the breathing space we needed going into the second half.

i completely understand nath feeling the pressure. can u, martyk, imagine wat it would be like growing up w the pressure nath has had to deal w? the expectation, the rumours about ur old man, the pressure to be as good a player as he once was? it would be ruddy tough to say the least! to suggest he was carried all year is one of the more ridiculous comments iv heard on this board in a long time...

so hopefully frank costa pulls some more magic, nath comes back, and he shows marty k his potential!

The Age is also reporting it. It sounds pretty official that even if he doesn't retire he'll take at least next year off.

Re: N.Ablett having some time away

This is so annoyng. Nablett has so much talent. He hasn't had a proper preseason and even if he does decide to play on he will have had another interrupted preseason. If he was commited he would be an absolute superstar

Well Einstein the kid kicked 3 goals in a winning grand final side so he perfomed a lot better than you were ever going to give him credit for. You were noticeably absent with your praise of him for the grand final.

If I am correct I think most people on here were arguing with you about his talent as a footballer, rather than his desire to play the game. You never rated him as a footballer first and foremost which I and most others here would take issue with.

As regards his application and desire, well that is a completely different issue. That has always been a potential problem with Nathan, but has nothing to do with the FACT that he has the talent to be a very good AFL footballer.

Thank you Nathan for helping to deliver us a premiership.

You were a solid contributor and now someone else (Harry Taylor?) needs to step up in your place if we are to have a decent crack at another one.
