He can if he says im not signing the extension with them, why would the Cavs throw the kitchen sink for him and then Melo says by the way im not signing the extension for you so at seasons end im gone and that leaves the Cavs in a worse position they were in b4 the trade. He is being very smart in saying that he wont go as a rental.

Well, the Cavs situation is obviously a bad example.

But take someone like Dallas, who could offer Caron Butler + Beaubois + a 1st, which Denver might prefer to the current NY offer. Dallas are happy to take the gamble and compete for a title this year, regardless of what Melo does afterwards.

Houston could put together an even better offer, though they're not likely anymore given their record.

Apparently George Karl likes the Knicks offer more then Jersey's but the Denver office obviously likes the Nets one. Unerstandable in the sense Karl wants to compete and the Knicks one would help them more now then the future.

Front-office source in Portland tells me the New Jersey Nets have already turned their attention to shedding salary and are focused on obtaining guard Andre Miller.
The Nets like Miller because he can play, and has an ending contract. They also covet a Blazers first-round draft pick or Rudy Fernandez.

The Denver Nuggets are close to finally completing their long-awaited trade to send Carmelo Anthony(notes) to the New York Knicks, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

The deal was not done, but an agreement could be reached as soon as Monday night, the source said. The source believes the two sides have proceeded too deep into negotiations to back away with Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET trade deadline nearing.
