We need a tall forward who has already developed and can step straight into senior Football next year.

Croad for a a player who is versatile and can be played at either end.

We already have picked up two small midfielders in Rodan and Bartel with Ablett to come at 40.

#1 Chris Judd - Sandy Dragons, AA, built midfielder, meant to be ready made for AFL.

#16 - Tall forward for Bendigo Pioneers, BOG and 5 goals in TAC Cup GF.

#20 - Daniel Elstone - Captain of Bendigo Pioneers, their go to man, consistant, tough midfielder, good leadership and hard at it, also good disposal.

#32 - Shane Harvey - Brother of Brent, fast midfielder, and from the Northern Knights. Great get at #32.

#36 - Will be John Baird - Key backman, BOG in VFL GF, was great throughout 2001 for Box Hill, and ex-rookie listed at Hawthorn.

#48 - ? - I know who it is...do you?

I'm happy with those...

Fair enough, I just would have thought selecting someone no certainty to be drafted so early is a bit of a waste. You did have other early picks to make use of I suppose.

If McCarthy goes early in the draft, I'll eat my words.

The Brisbane Lions are extremely pleased to welcome Quinten Lynch and Ben Finnin to the club for 2002 and beyond.

Taken at Pick No. 19, Quinten Lynch is a tall, powerful long kicking impact player who can defend or go forward. After winning All-Australian honors and playing senior football in the WAFL in 2001, Leigh Matthews and his recruiters see him as the ideal replacement for Matthew Kennedy at full back and expect him to possibly slot straight into the senior team next season. As a result it's expected that the versatile Mal Michael or Justin Leppitsch may be called upon to spend more time up forward, in the next few seasons, especially in the wake of Alistair Lynch's retirement.

Another 2001 U/18 All- Australian, Ben Finnin has also joined the club. Matthews stated that the Lions were a little surprised to see Finnin still available at Pick 35, but were very happy to pick him with the second selection and couldn't read his name out quick enough, when their turn came. At 189 cm tall, Matthews and his recruiting staff, see Finnin as the logical replacement for two-time premiership player Martin Pike, who while still a very handy player, is entering the twilight of his career. Finnin is a mobile player who is a strong mark and a long left foot kick.

When asked what their targeted players were before the draft, Matthews stated. "Well we looking long and hard at Sam Power, David Hale and Quinten Lynch as being our priorities, but of course with our first pick at 19, we had almost no chance of getting Power, and Hale was only a fair to middling chance. To pick up Quinten Lynch where we were, is a good result for us. We're very happy. "

Rounds 3 and 4 of the draft are tomorrow night. Matthews stated, "Well, I'll have a chat to my recruiting staff tonight. We'll reassess our priorities, and our deficiencies and target some of the remaining youngsters, who we think will do the job for us." When asked whether the Lions will recruit any players delisted from other clubs, Matthews just smiled and stated, "We're looking at a couple in particular and depending on who the other clubs take tomorrow night, we may just have a couple of surprises up our sleeves."

Geelong pulled one of the greatest shocks of the draft selecting Old Xaverians Matt McCarthy with pick 24, their fourth overall pick. Recruiting manager Steven Wells said that it was a bit of a gamble going for a 20 year old from the ammos when there were still a plethora of young talented kids avaialable.

"We wanted to make sure we got a tall forward who is already to step up to AFL level next year" he said.

The Cats were also bouyed by the Fab 3 midfielders in Vic Country captain James Bartel with pick 8, his Geelong Falcons teammate Gary Ablett who was picked up under the Father-Son rule at pick 40 and dual Morrish Medalist David Rodan with pick 17.

"I couldn't believe Rodan was still available at pick 17", Wells said. "There's not much of him, but he is all class, anyone who can win two Morrish Medals has clearly got talent".

Geelong also drafted the highly sort after Cameron Corad, brother of high profile Dockers recruit Trent Croad.

"Cameron's the sort of versatile player we need, he can play at either end and gives us another option".

"Hopefully this draft can set us up for the next few years and we are able to build a side around this group of youngsters".

Lets be honest, he's not 20 til December, so there is plenty of improvement left in him. What we needed was a STRONG forward now and not a kid who will take 2 or 3 years to develop. We didn't need any midfielders as I believe we got 3 of the best going around in the draft.

Are delisted rookie players and others automatically entered in the draft?
I know that player not already registered with the AFL have to nominate but what about Scott Cummings?

those who started the season as a senior-listed player are not automatically put into the draft, although they are welcome to nominate
