Farewell ye old PP. Whilst I'm not phased about losing the PP and it was good to have a win I still think we need a top 5-ish pick for someone like Lucas or Morabito. Just out of interest, how many top draft picks did we have during the 05' 06' years?

Sorry, I might be derailing the thread but i have a question thats been bugging me.

A lot of people seem to rate Shuey really highly and i've read his profile on the west coast home page, and it's all great news to think we have another speedy talented classy mid in our ranks. but if he's THAT highly rated, why wasn't he taken top 10?

what are his drawbacks?

eg, with Rich, recruiters thought he had short arms and whatnot so that made him slip.

He has a 11 inch schlong. It weighs him down when he runs and often gets called for incorrect disposal when he kicks it with his third leg

He always salutes from what I hear.

Nah the real answer to your question is the EXACT same reason Shannon Hurn slipped to us at 13. Querys on pace.

Watching that game was agonising! Wanting them to lose, hoping they would win, torture!

It's not right that you hope your team loses, so I am glad it is gone, although I am trying not to think of what we may have just passed up.

I am with you mate. I have always been against tanking but in the last few weeks I was starting to hope we get one. That's not right, and it was ripping my heart as supporter.

I reckon the AFL should get rid of first round priority picks, and also have a lottery for the last 4 teams for the for the first 4 picks in the draft. That should get rid of the tanking speculation.

Really? they thought he was slow?

wasnt he the quickest over 20m or something?

either way, we got him and im happy, just hope we can keep him!

Embers it either talking shit, which is likely, or he's having a go at you.

From the draft camp last year:

20-METRE SPRINT
A straight out 20-metre sprint test, with the best time recorded from three attempts.
1 – Ashley Smith (Dandenong Stingrays, VIC – small/medium midfielder) – 2.80 seconds – Just missed out on the record held by Port Adelaide's Danyle Pearce (2.79 sec)
2 – Jack Watts – (Sandringham Dragons, VIC – tall forward) – 2.82
3 – Stephen Hill (West Perth, WA – small/medium midfielder) – 2.83
4 – Nick Naitanui (Swan Districts, WA – ruckman) – 2.86
5 – Tom Swift (Claremont, WA – medium midfielder) – 2.89
6 – Ryan Schoenmakers (Norwood, SA – medium forward) – 2.90
7 – Nick Heyne (Gippsland Power, VIC – medium forward) – 2.91
Sam Blease (Eastern Ranges, VIC – small/medium midfielder) – 2.91
9 – Luke Shuey (Oakleigh Chargers, VIC – medium midfielder) – 2.92 Taylor Hunt (Sandringham Dragons, VIC – medium defender) – 2.92
Matthew DeBoer (Claremont, WA – medium midfielder) – 2.92

I'm no expert on the matter of drafting and young players in under age competitions but I suspect that Shuey gets talked up because we want him to be the white knight that saves us.

It was the same before Naitanui and Swift got games.

haha so when he has a pretty average first couple of games (and he will) we'll be wondering why we drafted him, comparing him to chad fletcher and wanting the recruiters heads on sticks right?

round and round we go

Kind of.

I think more likely than that is, after his first few average games, we'll decide that he isn't the white knight and select someone else from the WAFL.

Most likely that someone else will be our 2009 draft 1st round pick.

We wont critise anyone unless Shuey has a really terrible first few games.

Eagles finished 1,4,5,9 in the 20m sprint last year. 4 of the 10 most explosive athletes in that year. We'll be considered a fast team in a few years you'd think.

Nah there all one paced.

And where were Oakley-Nicholls, Fiora, Molan, Dunn, Drum, Trotter, Bradley, Egan, Walsh, L.Brennan, Thorp, Reid, Livingston, Angwin, Dylan Smith, McDougall taken? All top 10 picks in the last decade.

Having a high pick isn't a guarantee of getting a superstar. Is it worth the short-term sacrifice of losing games and building a losing culture?

There are no guarantees in life. And as i said, we can all cherry pick examples of a good player taken with a long odds pick or a crap player taken with a high pick. It doesn't change the fact that it is extremely difficult to get a player who will develop into A grade quality outside the 1st round of the draft. Why do you think clubs are so reluctant to trade early draft picks if they are as worthless as you are suggesting?

It's a dumb post. Yes there were a few failures here and there but the vast majority of high draft picks are much better players than their lower picked counterparts as logic would suggest.
