Based on the number of players we've produced so far that would have been a disaster.
Well it's unfair to examine the academy's current production as it stands today because the proposed model would have had a lot more funding from the AFL and/or our foundation bankrolling the operation to prevent such a disaster.

On top of this, however, the Swans would then have needed to offer their star graduates guaranteed contracts well before they were 'drafted' into the senior program otherwise the NRL clubs would have plundered our stocks after a huge up front investment.

This is where we could have really come unstuck ourselves, by hampering our salary cap with a gluttony of overpaid, yet unproven youngsters. Not to mention probably awful for our famed culture.

All in all, I can see why the AFL weren't keen on the idea if not entirely for their own selfish reasons.

Futures game on Grand Final day features 3 of our boys Joel Cochran , Joe Harrison and Mitch Woods
Good to see Cochran getting called up - one of the tallest players from next year's Academy group!

Tall Defender | 195cm | 28/03/2006

One of three 2006-born prospects in the Swans’ squad, Cochran played like an older and more confident player down back. He’s a good size at 195cm but isn’t limited to locking down a tall, and got involved both with intercepts and as an outlet option in transition. He seemed to pop up everywhere at times, proving strong aerially and shrewd with his reading of the play in either phase.

Will be good and 5 chins won't be happy
I cant recall the last quality tall we got from the academy that is playing best 22. I'm aware we've lost 2 this year to the NRL:mad: and that hurts, so hoping this one comes along for us. No pressure, a lot can change but would be nice to get a quality tall.

How good if that happens Ticks

No disrespect to our other academy players - but the ones who are best 22 have tended to be midfielders or started off as midfielders. Quality talls are just so difficult to find as I'm sure you know - would be amazing for the academy if we can get one through without the bloody NRL or Union grabbing them.

And the year after, we should have another 2!

Blakey is the only one, and only sorta counts as a tall.

Will Edwards looked like he might have something but has been disappointing this year imo. McAndrew could continue developing, and Naismith might have been good were it not for injuries.

Give Edwards some time !

if a young kid moves to Melbourne and is with the academy (say up until they are 15) to take up a scholaship with a Melbourne school does that mean we still have dibs on them via the academy?
Interesting question. I did see someone asking about that very scenario on the Draft board. There's a Brisbane Academy player who's seemingly boarding and playing in Melbourne.

Yes. I believe so. Sanders from Tas is at Melbourne Grammar as a boarder but will be tied to Norf's NGA.

Boarding School fees would cost a heap circa $50k pa, so it may help compete v Leeeeeeg contracts.

What sort of mid is Max King? I would kill for him to be a big bodied inside mid. He would never be as tall as Cripps, but he would be pretty close.
These are some write-ups on him via RookieMe:

He’s a dynamic 193cm midfielder, able to carve through traffic with eye-catching agility and smooth movement. With a strong opening game against GWS, King has stamped himself as a highly developable talent with promising upside.

Potentially one of the tallest midfielders in the entire carnival, King is an eye-catching type. He moves well for his size and displayed such dexterity with a super goal in the opening quarter, spinning out the front of a stoppage, getting the ball back at pace and slamming home a goal from 50 metres. King continued to cut through traffic and showcased a bit of his aerial range in a strong outing, living up to some of the quality of his namesake.

A midfielder almost as tall as his team’s rucks, King returned another promising performance with 27 disposals, six marks, and seven inside 50s from the engine room. King is just as capable of accumulating on the spread and using his height to take marks around the ground, than he is at shifting gears through traffic on the inside. He got into good spots to launch inside 50 and has a similarly unique inside-outside balance to what Fremantle’s Matt Johnson did at junior level.

Maybe I’m easy to please but I’m already keen on him.

Wow that's a genuinely exciting write-up. Need to keep him away from the NRL.
