A local lady, is on a partners visa, she had major knee replacement surgery under medicare.

This guys is an AUstralian Citizen, is being paid a pension by us.

Australia has recipricle rights for universal health with the UK, NZ and a few other European countries, even on tourist visas. It is not all medicare services for the poms, but most of them.

So do I, the droppping of English as a required subject from VCE has obviously had undesired affects.

As for the story - nothing new. The medicare rules have been around for a long time and are well known to the expat community. The guy was a chancer who thought he'd live cheaply in the phillipines and forego the usual necessities such as medical insurance. And as Qsaint said, we have reciprocal rights with the UK giving us access to the NHS and the British access to medicare

The other thing is if you stay in Australia for any length of time and you are not from a country with reciprical rights, you can get a 'medicare replacement' policy from some of the private health funds for about $130 per month.

which is worthless other than in a life threatening situation.

Every single member of the Alp and democrats should come to the UK and have a look at the NHS to realise what a complete and utter disaster it is to have health care provided almost entirely by the state and free at the point of entry.

An average wait of 4 hours at a local hospital's a&e would be a good place to start.

Thats about the same as the Poms get here they do not get reabates for seeing a gp etc. I went to the Harley st clinic on business once, where they did the worlds first heart transplant,(I think its private), but I wouldn't want to be sick there its way below the standard of our private hospitals. Mind you I am no expert but the corridors were filled with patients on trolleys, it was dirty etc etc
