'Conditions set' for Bin Laden handover

From news.com.au staff
18sep01

MIXED reports are emerging from Afghanistan, with claims a holy war has been declared against the US, but also that conditions have been set for the handover of terror suspect Osama bin Laden.

Taliban rulers reportedly set conditions for the possible handover in talks with Pakistani officials.

Saudi-born militant Osama bin Laden - the prime suspect in last weeks terrorist attacks on the United States - lives in exile in Afghanistan.

TV and agency reports this afternoon say the demands for his handover include that he be moved to a neutral Islamic country to face trial.

The spiritual leader of the Taliban Mullah Mohammad Omar was reportedly involved in the talks.

However, reports have also emerged that the Taliban had announced a jihad, or holy war, against America.

That report came Taliban's Voice of Shariat radio monitored by the BBC.

It quoted the deputy chairman of the Taliban Council of Ministers, Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhond.

Hello??!!?? A holy was is just about the worst thing that could happen. How many muslims are there in the world!!! A freakin lot, a lot of those ppl are fanatical and are ready to die on the spot because Allah will await them in the afterlife, they have no fear of death. A Holy War is not good.

Think about what they could do if we fight back, if we attack them on the weekend mid next week you could be walking through town and a muslim walks up next to you in crowded area rips open his shirt and blows himself to pieces with a bomb strapped to his chest. Did anyone see the special on 60 mins about that, see how much damage it did? These ppl are all over the world.

This is not good. Im not sure if ppl are taking this very serious, ppl just seem to be going back to there lives but a bigger war than WWII could errupt in the coming weeks and Australia could certainly be a target. We are a western world and we all know how much the muslims hate the western world.

G'day Gabriel, I can confirm that Bin Laden was trained by the USA to fight the Russians when they invaded Afghanistan.

Yes they did. When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 79/80 the CIA provided funding/arms/military training to the Afghani rebels who fought the soviets. Bin Laden was one of these rebels.

How ironic that the American policies of the time are coming back to haunt them today.

I can see another Vietnam about to happen...

Thanks guys.

I tell ya, I've got an American friend here and I care about her loads, I listen to her on this topic and I have to bite my lip about it.

Seems terrorism is only acceptable when the victims are Soviets.

Or at least non-Americans.

Sadly the American government and CIA's self-serving interfering policies in the affairs of others has come back to haunt them in the death of innocent victims going about their daily business in NY.

As tragic the events a week ago are, I still fail to see why the world has to hold American lives as more valuable than others.

you know what they say Gabriel - one mans's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

No doubt that Bin Laden was a 'good guy' once upon a time. Now it seems he is a 'bad guy' .

Through all this Bin Laden has remained essentially the same person - that is, fundamentalist Islamic, mysoginist, puritanical, ruthless, cold-hearted and deeply suspicious of 'the West'

But just because Bin Laden was fighting against Soviet occupation in the 1980's he was a 'good guy' and was supplied with weapons, training, intelligence, logistical supprt etc by the CIA.

Now he is not fighting the Soviets at all - so he is suddenly a 'bad guy'

go figure that little piece of gross American hyprocracy out ?

I am as sickened and appalled by terrorism as much as anybody, and I am not anti-American at all.

BUT I do honestly belive that the manner in which the USA chooses to conduct its foreign policy has meant they have brought this terrible catastrophe upon themselves.

I won't say 'they deserve it' because quite clearly nobody deserves to suffer the kind of disaster that they have just been through, but if they are really fair dinkum about stamping out terrorism then they should have a good hard look at themselves and ask some hard questions

cheers

Blues Brat,

Precisely.

I'm getting a little tired of this belief that the US is some innocent victim in this whole scenario, yet we all turn a blind eye to the questions which really need to be asked.

Unfortunately, I think CIA meddling is on the increase again. The US gov has basically opened pandora's box by giving the CIA the power to carry out political assassinations etc, while multiplying their budget by 10.

I don't think that we value only US lives more, the attitude is pretty much similar for the whole of the 1st world. What the WTC act did IMO was make us aware that we are all at risk.

LOL.
If you dont know what it means its basically, with the God they believe in...they can call a holy war against a nation. This means they can kill a whole bunch of people, but their God will forgive them.
Thats how i percieved it anyway.

Good point RacerX.

Perhaps seeing an icon of western society come crashing down jolted us all.

Although realistically, the chances of it happening to say, Centrepoint in Sydney, are very remote. The perpetrators who have enough hate and resources to pull off these acts are going to direct it at the source, the USA. Hitting an Australian target won't have any effect on the Americans.

Our only danger is if this turns into a full on war and we are seen as collaborators, aparantley Bin Laden is developing a following in Indonesia, right on our doorstep.

There are about 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. Indonesia, just to the north of Australia, has about 150 million of them.

So, "a lot of those ppl are fanatical". How many is "a lot"? One thousand? That's a mere 0.00007% of them. Ten thousand maybe? Only 0.0007%. Let's take a jump and say a million of them are fanatical. Jeeze....only 0.07%.....even if it's ten million fanatics willing to die, you still haven't reached 1% of all Muslims.

Anyway, how much of the Koran have you read? Have you even picked it up? How do you know if these fanatics haven't put their own spin on the Koran's teachings in an attempt to justify their actions. Have you considered that anti-abortionists in the US have often used the Bible to justify them murdering doctors who perform abortions (even though the Bible says "Thou shalt not kill")?

What gets me is that amount of fear and ignorance of people from different cultures. How many of you even know someone who is Islamic? How many of you have tried to learn something about their culture, to try and find some common ground.

I do not deny that there are Islamic extremists. But by the same token, it's stupid to make generalisations of a whole group of people on the actions of a tiny minority. The Ku Klux Klan and many of those loopy right wing gun fanatics in the US....including a man by the name of Timothy McVeigh.....all claim to have their beliefs to be supported by the Bible. The way you are painting Muslims would be the same as me saying that all Christians are like Tim McVeigh and his mates.

Al-jihad,or holy war,in Islam is the OBLIGATION of ALL Muslims to fight against the unbelievers, or non-Muslims.

Holy War is an indispensable part of the Sharia(Islamic Law) and will remain alive and active until the entire world submits to Allah.

You forget to mention one thing. Al-jihad can only be declared if it is felt that Islam is under attack.

Hence the reason why the Muslims went nuts over Salman Rushdies book. It was considered an attack on the religion itself.
