I met Tommy Hafey a few years ago when he was speaking at a leadership course for a group of Grade 5/6 students. I was there as one of the teachers.
The way he spoke to the kids was fantastic, and they were just spellbound, even though he was way before their time. They flocked for autographs afterwards and of course he obliged, with a grin and some kind words for each kid.
I was privileged to have a brief chat with him. A fine old gentleman - really had me wishing he'd spent some time at Carlton during his coaching career.

I lived in St.Kilda in the early 90's and did some time at Jean Jaques.
Many of the staff were spellbound by this older man that would enter and emerge from the water regardless of the weather, regardless of the season.
Tom Hafey,I would say.
An Immortal.

Either way, his footballing future would be in massive doubt as we speak.
Surely the Giants will have to suspend him at the very least.
That's if he's very lucky. I think if it had only been 1-2 charges he may have been suspended but with 6 its quite difficult for the Giants to keep him on.

Given his disposal issues, I'm surprised Greene hit the target. :rainbow:

There's something seriously wrong with the psyche of so many footballers. So many have a 'god complex', largely bestowed upon them by the public perception that they are role models and someone to look up to.

There are instances where that may well be the case but the majority are a long, long way off that.

I won't specifically address the Greene issue until such time as all the evidence comes out, but it doesn't look good for him at this stage. I hope justice comes his way - whichever side of the coin it falls on.

Wasnt there some murmuring at the end of 1980 about us chasing after Hafey to come and coach for us... steal him away from Collingwood?

I never heard about that one, but that's a fair while ago now and I might not have been paying attention at the time.
Hafey had been performing miracles getting his team of grunts at Collingwood into grand finals.
We had an elite team that just needed an elite coach to take them that extra step to winning more flags, so it wouldn't surprise me to learn we were chasing Tommy.
We picked up Parko instead, and the rest, as they say...

The more we hear about this the more you realise that he's going to be extremely lucky to stay on the Giants list.
What is of more concern to him is the very real chance of him doing jail time should he be found guilty of any of these charges.

Yet another young man getting into trouble on the back of excessive alcohol consumption. With no shortage of testosterone, bravado and ego the last thing males in general and young males in particular need is impaired judgement.

Nothing else comes remotely close to alcohol being the single biggest catalyst for violence in our society.

Alcohol may well be a trigger but some decency and respect wouldn't go astray either.

Still astounds me that we think it a good idea to impose damage upon another human being...............and that's not just alcohol.

It is not only the people involved in the violence but their respective family and friends who have to cope with the fallout. I'm so over violence towards other people and animals, it has become beyond a joke and now seems commonplace.

Violence has always been around but somehow we thought that violence was a little more dignified in generations past.

The golden rule is all you need to apply but our greed, ego and feeling of entitlement won't allow that.

This. Having had older parents (Dad was born in 1917, I was born in 1980) I can appreciate the thought pattern that applied in generations past. Now violence seems so needless - not that it wasn't before - but at least then there was some type of honor code that went into violence rather than it being so clearly needless.

As I said it is a catalyst; ie if alcohol wasn't involved a lot of these incidents wouldn't occur. Having said that what we would and should consider the basic tenements of being a decent person are sadly lacking in a hellva a lot of people regardless of whether alcohol is involved.

Young males have a basic biological urge to partake in risky behaviour (read stupid, thoughtless, inappropriate and any number of other adjectives), alcohol certainly doesn't help contain those urges.

It's a complete and utter cop out to blame the person's behaviour on the alcohol he consumed.

Sure it wouldn't have helped, but saying he carried out the assault because he was under the influence is giving him an easy way out.

I've been drunk before (just a few times.....) and not once have I thought to assault someone with a weapon.

The alcohol may well have been partially to blame.......but let's not ignore the very real chance that he's a complete and utter dickhead with a god complex because of his status as an AFL footballer.
