Watched 360 tonight and their tribute to Tom Hafey was very moving.
Had a lump in my throat for the first 30 minutes.
What an inspirational man he was.
Same. His ability to inspire went well beyond the footy field, but in footy terms he sits on the very top branch with the likes of Whitten and Barrasi.

It's the same argument that guns kill people rather than incompetent people with guns kill people.

I'm not a drinker - will have one socially or at a party - but don't see the point in getting blotto. Been there, done that a couple of times and it wasn't nearly as entertaining as I thought it would be. Nobody is forcing these kids to drink. Today's young adult culture is surprisingly better than my own (I'm only 34 so a generation past today's) when it comes to drinking (there was an article on the news last night about it statistically supporting this fact). Movements such as straight edge (no drinking, alcohol, etc.) are a lot more prevalent, etc. than they were even half a decade or so ago.

I would argue much of it stems from the level of discipline being applied at home from an early age. When I was growing up, due to older parents, I was always well disciplined. I was given some rope but if I hung myself, I was called on it and disciplined as I should have been. It appears to me that discipline is much more casual today than it ever has been. Most families have to have both parents working long hours to be financial enough to support their families resulting in less time available to be spent with the family/kids, the common cry that parents expect teachers to do their job, etc. This has led to some of the younger generation not growing up self disciplined because of a lack of repercussions.

It's a complete and utter cop out to blame the person's behaviour on the alcohol he consumed.

Sure it wouldn't have helped, but saying he carried out the assault because he was under the influence is giving him an easy way out.

I've been drunk before (just a few times.....) and not once have I thought to assault someone with a weapon.

The alcohol may well have been partially to blame.......but let's not ignore the very real chance that he's a complete and utter dickhead with a god complex because of his status as an AFL footballer.
Same here (plenty of times) but my argument is not about using the alcohol consumption as a excuse, it's that excessive alcohol consumption impairs judgement and is a contributing influence to anti social behaviour. Doesn't lessen the burden of responsibility or how the law should judge him it's just a fact.

Plenty of people carry out assaults stone cold sober so there are obviously many reasons as to why someone would commit a violent act.

A parent may do the best job in the world of teaching their child right from wrong but you will never be able to completely knock impulsive behaviour out of them. We all need impulse and instinct to survive, at least in part and it's a damn sight easier to get it right more times than not when you're not blind drunk or high on drugs.

You could certainly put a question mark over his status as a footballer having that much to do with why he did it as well. Plenty of average Joes doing what he has done every day of the week.

Either way, his footballing future would be in massive doubt as we speak.
Surely the Giants will have to suspend him at the very least.
At a minimum, he'll be lucky if the Giant's dont let him go. he went to my school (albeit a different campus and a couple of years ahead) but know people that know him and from what I've heard he's always had a bit of a crazy streak. Obviously nothing as serious as what he's done now, but small things that I guess could be seen as a progression.

With a charge sheet like that hard to see him on the Giants list next year. Jail time.
Dane Swan didn't go to jail after he was involved in a serious assault.

Magpie Dane Swan faces 13 charges

Unless it was premeditated like Murray Newman, the court won't jail someone and use taxpayers dollars to look after someone who isn't a danger to the community. Unlikely to re-offend. Even if he does, Scotland didn't go in after he was involved in two incidents.

Or Marley Williams. Seems the rules are slightly different than for us "regular" folk.

Train with me, 2 nights a week for 9 weeks.

Clarity, is coming your way.
