Essendope's recruitment of Chapman suggests they thought they were close to winning a premiership. They significantly over rated their list. They rely on the same handful of players to keep them competitive e.g. Goddard, Watson, Zaharakis &, like us, their list falls away quite quickly after you get beyond their best players.

All Chapman is doing is topping up his super & at the same time keeping a younger player out of the team (much like Fletcher).

Yeah, while that good gear they injected in 2012 is still giving them an edge. ;)

And, as is typical of Essendon supporters, they refuse to accept the truth and continue to give Fletcher standing ovations every time he gets the ball.

Fletcher is actually keeping a young promising defender in Carlisle out of the backline....

Ya kidding aren't you.

Still holds his own, plays as an onfield defensive coach...........shit a brick, you couldn't buy that sort of stuff.

Agree with mediumsizered on this one numb3rs.

Selfish to keep playing on and holding back development of his replacement.

You're kidding right? Leaks a lot of goals these days. Doesn't hold his own much at all.
Seen him take off a couple of weeks ago and nail one from around 80. He's skinny as a rake, runs like a deer, and contributes every time he plays.

Kernahan kicked 7 on him in a Grand Final 21 years ago, when he was a school-kid.

So what's your point???

Fletcher's continued selection is an admission by the EFC that they don't believe there is a younger player on their list worthy of faith from the match committee. A club is in a lot of trouble if one of their best 18 players is a 39 year old who plays mostly as a loose man in defence.

My personal opinion is that Fletcher is being extremely selfish in playing on & of course no-one at the EFC would have the balls to tap him on the shoulder, in much the same way they are too scared to move Hird on despite the misery he has brought to the club. There comes a time when you have save players from themselves. We did it with Nicholls in 1974 & then later on with Bradley, who would have kept playing until he was 40, even though this would have brought no benefit to the team in the long run.

Absolutely. Fancy moving Carlisle forward, where I predicted prior to this season that he would struggle, so as to allow a self-indulgent 39 year old to run around in the name of personal gratification (i.e. breaking games records).

They are quite scared of making the tough decisions at Essendope.

Dont really know or care whether he's keeping a younger player out or not, but it seems he's hanging around more for Tuck's record then because he wants to help his team's transition to the next generation.

He is still playing his role well easy to bag out their defence when the rest of the team isn't much chop.

Gets his hands on it and links up well too. Just because someone is old doesn't mean they aren't any good.

That training of thought forced Craig Bradley into retirement before he was ready

Your point is he kicked a goal at the start of a game a few weeks ago?

Oh well why didn't you say so. Should play until 50 then.

He's well past it.

His loyalty (which is a convenience to some) and his longevity, & ability to play a productive role now means he's selfish.........

To quote George 'That is confusing things'.

Seen him reach out and stop a rampaging Garlett last year, haven't seen too many forwards kick buckets of goals on him, or seen him outmarked, outpaced, or outbodied lately.

Always watch the game.

Fletcher had a great start to the year but his last couple of games haven't been as good.
Can't see why it's selfish for him to play on, as at the end of the day..................It's not his call.

Chapman looked more cooked than Fletcher and they own him for a couple of years yet.

Lately has been when people have kicked goals on him. The fact that he can still lope around that defensive 50 is a worrying sign for Essendon.

Put it this way, he wouldn't get a game in any other side anymore. He's there on reputation only these days.

Stig, I believe this is their problem....they bought way too much of the stuff and now they are going to court!? :)
