Who are they robbing blind? People than cannot tell the difference between red and green? Or the ones that don't care?

Easy penalty to avoid.
Collingwood supporters have been basically robbing people blind and done revenue raising for years so subsequently this thing is quite ironic.

No, people who cross to the side of the line at an intersection, or people that cross small roads in the city where there is no traffic, not at the cross walk.

It happens and happens often.

I disagree, definitely state sanctioned robbery. Just because some are better at spotting the culprits than others, doesn't make it any better.

Sure it does, because it's not like they're hiding, they stand in plain view and it's pretty clear what they're doing.

They can't fine you if you don't choose to jaywalk.

This wasn't set up in the suburban back streets; that intersection is one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in Melbourne.

Quite easily to avoid a fine even when they do a 'sting' or a 'cop out of nowhere'.

Perhaps it's only criminals like us that can spot them as soon as they're anywhere nearby

I know two people recently who were busted on separate occasions for J-walking in the city, not by cops waiting to ticket people at a big intersection, but just random officers on the street.

One was here as a tourist, on an empty street after leaving the tram crossed just before the crossing and was ticketed. Another by a plain clothes.

It's a scam and taxation by stealth, just like 200$ tickets for forgetting a concession card, or any number of other minor infringements.

Suckers like you two, are why governments feel empowered to do this.

That is incredibly unlucky. I have worked in the CBD for over 12 years and never once been ticketed.

Granted I'd never be stupid enough to J-walk in front of a Police Officer, but still...

That's one way of looking at it - another way it to refer to it as a stupidity tax.

Yeah, damn those law-abiding citizens who have at least a modicum of situational awareness to not cross at one of (if not) the intersection in the CBD that has the most accidents invovling a pedestrian while there are a number of uniformed Police Officers there.
The outrage!

You should stop being so abusive mofra... Abuse is not tolerated on BF. For the record, calling people stupid falls under the umbrella of abuse.

I didn't directly abuse anyone oh calm one, merely making a value judgement on jaywalkers.

"I'm sorry if you misunderstood my post"

Fining people for jaywalking seems petty but in all honesty its probably one of the easiest fines to avoid - cross at the designated location and if its a controlled intersection cross at the appropriate time. When its a busy intersection where pedestrians aren't doing as they should such that they are risking injury to themselves and/or disrupting traffic by forcing cars to wait when they should be able to move forward is dangerous and inconsiderate

Thinking about this thread and those who condone fines for jaywalking, is their anything you're able to do without being told? Do you know how to use a roundabout, what a give way sign is? Is thier an app yet on how to not become reliant on apps?

Us country bumpkins are quite concerned about you city slickers.

Getting fined for jaywalking displays a clear lack of street smarts.

Ok will do.

For the record you offend me with your implication that i don't have street smarts, i do. Fk the rest of the clowns giving grief in this thread, when it's you saying it, it hurts.

Firstly, A. the cop did come out of nowhere and B. i didn't know i had to worry about jay walking fines - seriously have never heard of anyone getting one before. I've jay walked in front of cops before (many many many times)

Balkan politics is a long time favourite of mine, any place that can go from being one country to about seven at last count inside a generation is always going to be worthy of further investigation.

So the first person still crossed a street in front of a cop, thanks for clarifying. The plain clothes officer instance is desperately unlucky, but I've never seen it happen myself nor known it to happen to anyone else, sounds like an isolated incident.

That said, jaywalking is still jaywalking, you don't do it, you don't get fined.

It's not hard to slip a concession card in behind your ticket in your wallet (they're just a piece of laminated paper). If there wasn't a significant deterrent, then people would just run with the "oh, I forgot it". There's no good excuse for not having a concession card on you when travelling on PT, it can be stored alongside a Myki FFS.

What rubbish, as I said before, the government can't fine you for this if you don't actually do it, some people just seem to have the mentality where nothing is their own fault.

Well, he actually didn't. You just didn't see him. Unless Vicpol have developed teleportation (and now need to increase fines revenue to pay for the research)
and B. i didn't know i had to worry about jay walking fines - seriously have never heard of anyone getting one before. I've jay walked in front of cops before (many many many times)
Won't do it again though, will you?

Like someone mentioned earlier, it's entirely possible there have been pedestrian accidents at that intersection so they've been told to crack down on jaywalking. It's extremely unlucky and you shouldn't be hanged for it, but just cop the fine and move on. I just can't stand the neo-anarchist view that anyone who doesn't lambast the coppers for doing what they're paid to do is some kind of sheep or drone. It's tiresome.

Won't do it again though, will you?

Not sure, infact pretty sure i've already done it since.

I don't see jay walking as a bad thing or an offense that needs to be reined in. So i can't relate to your excitement that fining me for jay walking will stop me from doing it.

The fact that you give a shit whether people jay walk tells me that you don't have much going on in your life.
