Gone from leading the attack to not in the mix, got to be more to this.
Very strange he has not been selected. Just don’t know where the selectors are coming from with this.

Any thoughts?
Simply a case of we got riches of wicket takers at moment. Him and Pattinson similar strike power and also if off in line or swing, both can go for a few runs. Unlikely to play both in same team as a result. Pattinson bowled heaps better in lead up game before Test one. It is why Starc was left out.
Pattinson back is not good enough to play many Tests in a row so next Test likely Pattinson rested and Starc in. They would all be aware of this.
Nothing more to it. We just spreading out our fast bowling resources over this 5 Test series in way we best believe to secure Ashes.

Hard to see Starc playing next test with current bowlers form unless a disaster happens from here
He will as they not going to risk Pattinson back breaking down. They know he is a risk of breaking down so use him whilst he still upright and do not push our luck of playing Pattinson too many Tests in a row. Starc also breaks down with ankles too so unleashing for last two Tests not a bad policy as doubt Starc would have made it through a 5 Test series if he started out in Test one of series.

He's just not as well suited to the conditions we're playing this series in as the others. Right now we have a huge amount of depth in our fast bowling stocks, top tier quicks of various kinds that allows us to not play someone who is a top tier bowler in conditions that don't really suit him.

If for some reason we find ourselves about to play a Test on a flat and dry track in sunny conditions then I'd expect to see Starc play. In the actual conditions he's the 4th or 5th most effective fast bowler in the squad. I do think he'll play at some point - if the Ashes are secured then you can't see them risking injuries with another pair of back to back Tests coming up.

Oh boi I am sure Pattinson will be Fine for the next test he bowled only 5 overs in the first innings lol sure he will pull up fine there a break between test this time with a tour game been played

I think we’ve been smart about this. Got 5 legitimate pace bowling options while our all-rounders suck.

So play to our strengths. Select 6 bats, 4 bowlers, no shitty makeshift all-rounder like Mitch Marsh, and rotate the quicks so they don’t get run into the ground. Working well so far, the bowling at least. I hope Starc does get his chance.

The only places Starc should have been a consideration for were Lord's (rightly didn't happen) and The Oval. The two London grounds, particularly the latter, are the ones where movement is least. The Oval often has a bit of bounce, and almost becomes a slow version of an Australian deck.

When there's movement off the pitch, bowlers who can keep the ball in dangerous spots consistently are at a premium. When conditions are more benign, the shock factor might have more use. The Oval is the best chance of that, so if one of the current three is rotated out Starc might come in there. And he will probably return more regularly back home.

Yeh I think Starc needs to Tighten up a bit. The bowlers ( ALL) have been good. He would be champing at the bit tho and probably a little disappointed

Pattinson WHEN fit is just a monster as well. Starc is a mighty fine one day player

And it's not like the decision is wrong, Siddle was fantastic first test, Hazlewood has bowled beutifully as well once he's come in

Which leads into the point, 3 strike bowlers dont really cut it unless you are playing in AUS.

If Starc is going to play one of the remaining tests it would be Old Trafford over The Oval you'd think. But I did think he'd be a big chance to play at Headingly, so maybe the selectors have made it clear that his looseness is not going to work in England (and for the most part this has proven correct this series, and over the course of time in the old dart).

Pattinson the only one vulnerable. He's been good but not great in this series. Certainly not done enough to categorically say he couldn't be rotated out.

You don't see a very serious problem there? Wade should not be allowed near a pair of wicket-keeping gloves. Keep him in a different dressing room if necessary.

I see a massive issue with it, but in my melty after thoughts I didn't want Paine anywhere near an Aussie side ever again.
I still don't.
The only consolation I have is when Smith is back Paine is just the mouth piece, Smith is still the real captain.

Because Smith is a tactical genius and charismatic leader of men...

Incredible batsman, but some of the goldfish level echoes in the aftermath of the loss are ludicrous.

I've been saying this all along, we have to play a left arm quick to help Lyon when bowling to right handers, it's an absolute no brainer IMO, Stark is also the quickest of our bowlers and gives us a different look, I reckon he comes in for an unlucky Pattinson next test.

Lyon is our biggest weapon bar none, play Stark and Lyon becomes an absolute nightmare for right hand bats, when you have a world class off spinner playing a left arm quick is a must.

If I had my way I would have Maxwell in the side as well, play him as a bowling all-rounder and bat him at 7.

Watching some of the comments about Starc has been quite hilarious and really eye opening. You can see why we've been so useless overseas for a long time, people develop this odd obsession with players outside the XI who are apparently going to dominate the opposition by themselves.

There's a weird perception of Starc from some people that he's some smart, incredible bowler who turns it up to 150km and has oppositions scared. Truth is he's a dumb bowler in the longer format who people thought would continue to improve and turn into peak Johnson. It hasn't happened and never will happen, if anything he's gone backwards. He's nearly 30 and won't be long before his speed suffers and then he'll have zero to offer the format.

IMO he'll get another chance during our summer but if Pattinson and any of the younger bowlers like Richardson/Paris start to string games together he'll phased out of the format and will be a short form specialist only.

Just about every sportsman magically gets better when they are on the sidelines. But conversely, people are acting like Starc is nigh on useless when that is far from the case. His numbers over his career, against England and in England are - whilst not stunning - all good enough for test cricket. He's just currently behind two of the best bowlers in the world (Haze and Cummins) and competing for one spot with two other very good bowlers.

FWIW, I'd be very tempted to bring in Starc for Old Trafford where the bounce and carry should suit him. Lyon also benefits having the foot marks from a left armer to bowl at.
