Old idea now of its time: Cloke for Sydney?

I pretty much disregarded talk of trying to land Cloke next year when it first came up. But now as details emerge of the terms he's after (5 years $900k) and looking at his age 25/26 I'm starting to think he could be the missing link in our dire troubles up forward.

Lyons knows the value of a forward like that hence Freo's purported $1m a year deal.

Collingwood have been talking $750k and only offering a short term deal (3 or 4 according to today's papers).

Crazy talk?

Who, as a forward, would want to go to Freo under Ross Lyon. I can see room for Cloke in the team, but maybe not under the salary cap, depending on whether players retire this year and how much we have to pay JPK to keep him, possibly a few other players will be needing pay rises over hte next few years, yd have to be aware of how much money is available

AG/Grim/Liz with what will be a JK pay rise, Reid having being locked into a long termer and Mumfords heavy contract do we have that kind of money to offer.

This is what I'd be keen to know. Would a backended 5 year contract with a trigger for a sixth work? I wish I knew more of the intricacies of how the cap worked in Sydney.

Would love to see what Cloke could teach Reid...since Hall and Bradshaw left we have no one on the list currently who is a specialist, career KP forward. Even Goodes as been learning that role on the job.

Agree with CAS (we also had to give Mitchell a larger contract to keep GWS away), don't think we have space in the salary cap to offer a million a year.

You agree with me???

I don't know how much space we have on our cap so I want making any kind of statement just a concern.

5 years is a really long time
5 yeras is a long time but if it works out you end up paying less because players salarys continue to rise so his last 2-3 years might end up reasonably cheap. When the Swans have been in premiership contention they have have one of the best forwars in the comp so lets do what we can to get him!

5 years is fine for a young KPF such as Cloke, i really hope we are aggressive at the trade table acquiring a KPF just please no more flankers/taggers or jack of all trades master of none players.

I'd hate to be signing him on the back of his form this year. :p Been a bit ordinary compared to 2011. We really need a key forward, i wonder if we could afford to throw another 5 year deal at someone?

Always a worry, player does a knee in the first year then it was a bad idea, player goes on a rampage for the whole contract yr a genius
Injuries could be a concern. But a 26 year old has more time to contribute if one occurs. But on a sidenote, job security is how you entice a premium player to make the move in the first place, so I guess that's the only real leverage the "buying" club has to work with. If you're trying to grab another list's required player you probably can't avoid adding some extra seasons to a contract?

I do like the concept don't get me wrong....

Who would you be prepared to give up? Jetta and a pick?

(please understand I am in no way condoning this as a potential trade, just that C'wood aren't going to give him up for nothing.)

He's a restricted free agent so presumably the theory is we make him an offer that he is comfortable with and that Collingwood can't or won't match.

Surely we have to make a play at either Ben Reid or Cloke, I cant see Reid staying if Cloke does as the $$ wont be there for him. Cloke seems the likely player to be leaving though and geee whizz we could do with him. ANYTHING that can be be done must be done to get him in the Red and White IMO.
