Whats your thoughts? Has music got worse as time has gone by? Or do u think music has evolved and become "better".

Only thing that reaaaaally annoys me is the sampling revolution - bastardized versions of classic songs, layered with rap 'vocals' on the verse, followed by a deviant chorus (Puff Daddy's 'I'll Be Missing You' is a shining t urd of an example). It's like - "Look at me, I've just photocopied the Mona Lisa and drawn glasses and a moustache on her. Aren't I a genius."

To me, that's just lame.

What annoys me is people dismissing music because it is new. Oh old stuff is lots better, yeah right, hindsight is 20/20 and its very easy to look back on the past in a good way.

It depends.
I f a young band who writes their own songs comes up then good for them.

If a "group" like BACKSTREET BOYS OR HUMAN NATURE do an album'
it generally consists of other writers tunes with afew poxy lyrics penned by the performers just to get a writing credit.

Thats where the industry breaks into two.

Unfortunately MTV has the power to announce what the new gen hears first and its usually the over produced crap puppets, the ones that can double as hosts on the networks varied seasonal programs such as Spring break.

Older music is certainly better arranged and orchestrated by real arrangers and composers.

Old rock is still good rock but only if the guys playing it still mean it.

Real artists have to eat shot to have any real bearing in music and their impression.

a line from the song handle me with care sums todays music up to a t.

"over-exposed, commercialised"

having said that there is some really great music today, its like finding the needle in the haystack, alot of fillers covering the classics

but don't think everything from the good old days was good and still holds up today, a measure of its greatness is basically does the song hold up today, alot of dated music is considered bad even though it reflected those times if not todays

so in conclusion both eras had their share of good and bad

I wouldnt call "old" and "new" eras per se. Where exactly does old finish and new begin? Is the 90s now considered "old"?

If you look purely at the mainstream music then yes you could have the opinion that music has changed a lot.

These days a bit more you need to go looking for good stuff but it's not hard to find.

It's like comparing footballers from different eras - it is alarming when the music which was in your peak music listening period [15 - 22] starts to be played on Oldies stations.

I have to say I don't really like today's music at all and I'm only 17! Maybe it's just because ever since I was little my parents have been playing stuff like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones etc so that influences what I like. I mean there are afew recent songs that I like but there's nothing out now that I can see as being known as a "classic" in future years.

A real chestnut for mine .

I`m in my mid-thirties and i remember my folks when i was a teenager growing up would take the pi`ss out of what i was listening to "Thats not real music" it`s just noise ( I`m sure a lot of you would have heard that line ).

I now have teenage daughters and i have got to admit that i have given that line to them and sometimes i think "am i right or am i just sounding like my parents"

I still get to about a dozen gigs a year on average and buy CD`s on a regular basis so i do think that there is a lot of good music being made in this day and age but.... there is, IMHO , a lot of absolute garbage that is made purely as fodder , made as a product to sell . Made with a view to appeal to a certain demographic , made with the express purpose to move units .........Not being made because it is the creative art that is eminating out of an individual , the yearnings and thoughts flowing out of a gifted artist .

Music being created by marketing guru`s who study what`s "hot" and whats not and know where to take it . Music that appeals to the highest common denominator and then sold with a fervor that makes big Kev look like a church mouse .

The shining example is Nelly`s " but it`s all in my head , i think about it over and over again ......."

One sentence and piece of music that lasts in total for about 7-8 seconds and all they do is keep looping it about 30 times and there is your song. Seriously , if that stacks up with the classics of yore i will give it away . Bands that were around a decade ago ( still are today ) like Tool , NIN , Radiohead take months , even years to produce 9-10 songs that they consider worthy enough to put on an album and then you have stuff that could be put together in a day out selling everything .

I think older music is a lot more genuine , music made for a reason other than financial gain , music made because it is a part of the artist, part of thier soul . There is still music being made today that is good .... you just have to look a lot harder to find it . The bulk of the population will generally buy and listen to what is shoved down thier throats on commercial radio and television .... you have to have a genuine passion and interest in music to find the good gear , which i think is a genuine indictment on the people that run industry .

I don`t think that it is a coinsidence that there is a growing trend of bands ditching thier labels and doing things independantly . I urge all music lovers to support these bands . It is becoming to hard for them . Music labels telling them " we want you to sound like this " ???? .

This modern "soul" that is just the same lines and rehashed and moulded . 50 cent and all his clones . Artist featuring the artist .. marketing and it`s height of disgistingness .

In summing , i lean towards older music , made for truer reasons , crafted , plied , then played live , talented musicians , passion ,

Not saying it aint there today , it is just a hell of a lot more diluted and harder to find

The only bands that I listen to are all considerd to be "new". But considering that Im obsessed with music that the majority of people hate, I guess its a lost cause to even comment.

i agree with you there IDGAF... i would say there is music now which is just as good as there was years ago... however the difference is this music isn't mainstream any more, and the mainstream music is just crap for the most part...

There is still great music being composed and recorded but you have to look a little harder as there is so much **** out there nowadays. You will struggle to find decent music on commercial radio stations.

What gets passed off as music today is a joke. Everything has changed. I don't listen to anything produced after 1990, it's all just a waste of time.

Todays technology allows anyone to go into a studio weather you can sing or not or play an instrument and it can sound half good.

the quality of musicians has gone down a lot and theres just not the icons there use to be in music now, seems being a actor will get you a record contract these days.

there is some good music going around and if it wasnt for the interenet you would never find it.

I've heard maybe two Eminem songs, heard of 2Pac and Crazy Frog (not one song though), otherwise I've never heard of any of these people!

That's pretty bad when one of 2Pac's absolute bottom of the barrel material is making no 1.

Precisely. The only difference now to what I still consider to be the 'Glory Days' is that Triple J no longer seems to provide a credible alternative to commercial stations.

Disclosure: As I type this, I am listening to the Stone Roses.

Give RRR a shot.

As for this aria list, how can a 2pac song be number 1? Did he release another retrospective album lately?
