Old school workouts

Was just having a chat to my old man and we came onto the topic of workouts.

He was in the Irish Navy back in the day and the swears black and blue by the fitness regiment they had.

Things like (using his terms)
Wingspans, holding your arms out to the side and keeping them up and level with the shoulders for as long as possible
5x 15minutes a day (He says the record was held by the Captain with 1hr43minutes)

There were others but this is the one that interested me the most, he says that he was never stronger across the arms and back then when he was doing these everyday.

I'm keen to know if anyone has some experience with the workout and if it really is as effective as he says it was.

I'm also keen to read about some other old fashioned workouts.
