Eight team league under the name of the Tasmanian Football League with two separate divisions, Northern Division and Southern Division.

Each team from their respective division plays the three other teams within their division twice and those in the other division once. This would lead to 21 rounds, only one more then the current NTFL. Doing this set up would decrease the traveling needed and increase the crowds due to more local games.

Northern Division –

North Launceston
South Launceston
Burnie Dockers
Devonport

Southern Division –

Glenorchy
North Hobart
New Norfolk
Hobart

In later years when it’s settled of course, new teams would be added and the competition expanded.

Come finals time, the top two teams of their respective divisions are put into a top four ladder which is placed in order by points and percentage.

Example - North Launceston (64pts – 114%) and South Launceston (56pts – 93%) finish first and second respectively in the Northern Division. Hobart (60pts – 100%) and North Hobart (60pts – 91%) finish first and second respectively in the Southern Division.

North Hobart
South Launceston

Week One – 1st and 2nd play for a spot in the TFL grand final, both earn double chances. 3rd and 4th play an elimination final with the winner going on the next week to play the loser of 1st and 2nd for a spot in the grand final.

Hobart defeat North Launceston
North Hobart defeat South Launceston

Week Two – Loser of 1st and 2nd plays winner of 3rd and 4th for a spot in the grand final.

North Hobart defeats North Launceston.

In the seniors maybe, but their reserves and colts were decent this year, they have some fairly decent kids coming through if they can keep them. Off field is their major problem and has been getting worse.

I'd hope for Hobarts sake things pick up, I'd hate to see another Sandy Bay.

Earliest I have is the full 1980 TANFL Grand Final between Hobart & Glenorchy.

Got a few others, all Hobart games on VHS tapes, had the last quarter of a 1987 game from KGV where Glenorchy annihilated Hobart (20.13.133 - 2.2.14) in a slopheap on Beta, and also an early 90's match from York Park between North Launceston and North Hobart also on Beta.

Edit: Also have a small bit of footage from a Sandy Bay - Hobart game, Round 1 1967 from Queenborough.

There wasn't so much a dedicated TFL website, more a webpage link on a football website - you can find it through the old wayback site.

The furthest I could go to find full match data on the TFL was by microfilm at the Launceston Library. I usually get the leading goalkicker tallies out of old programs and official publications rather than the paper, as it tends to be a little shonky as you say.
One difference between Tasmania and the rest of the country for many years was that, in the case of TANFL football (pre-1980 especially) that they used to count intra-state and other rep games in the league's goalkicking tally.
Example: Peter Hudson was credited with 202 goals in the 1979 season, but he didn't kick all 202 in the TANFL - he booted 179.
In 1978 he was credited with 191, but that included rep game tallies as well.
Paul Courto became the first Hobart player (and one of only two in the club's 64 year history) to boot 100-goals in a season.
However Courto only booted 86 of them in that 15-round TANFL home & away season and two finals - the remainder came from Winfield Statewide Cup matches.
So therefore, the only HFC player to pot 100 in a year officially was Wayne 'Baldy' Fox in 1988, the first year of Mark Browning's coaching stint.
 
I remember seeing Paul Courto one day "touch the gods" at Bellerive Oval in about 1980.

He went up, up up and kept going up & took a screamer!!!!!!!

That guy could just hang in the air and did it every game. Bit of an average kick and struggled beyond 40m's though.

Retired from TFL at the end of '81 at the age of about 23.

Likewise I can remember him taking one at the TCA in the pocket right out in front of the Western Stand and the whole stand rose as one when he took it. :thumbsu:

Didn't play all that long either, not sure what year he debuted in, but yeah I was at what would've been his last game then.
Would've been the '81 First Semi against Glenorchy where Peter Hudson made shock return for the Pies and kicked 14 goals - all after quarter time - to knock the Tigers out. They were wooden spooners the next 4 years, so he was a big loss to them.
How come he retired so early in his career? He had heaps of talent that guy and was a terrific bloke as well.
Had a brother John who also played for the club.
