Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

Harsh on Kizza. Was good this yr. The kinda player that can push on a bit into his 30s I reckon. So long as he doesn't lose too much stamina & speed/acceleration.

I sort of hope we are considering playing Jack more forward next year though.

Yeah, he & Heeney interchange roles a bit. The thing is we have Jones & Mills also good for a spot in the mids too so I can certainly see proven goalkickers like Kiz & Parks getting more of a run fwd as a mid game "rest".

Kiz does seem the next established player to be pushed out after McVeigh.

Florent does seem a good like for like replacement, given that he will be eased in at half forward, where Jack will be eased out. Has a few similar qualities with that nimbleness in traffic and running capacity.

More and more I think he is a good pick up, but I wasn't excited at first.

Florent looks like a 2018 debut player to me, took Zak Jones a while and he was more ready than Florent in my opinion.

Florent will start forward of centre (HFF) or even on the wing where it is less taxing on his body. He will play some games in 2017, but he isn't like a McGrath who is ready right now. Longer term prospect for sure.

Hayward is the one that is pretty ready.

Kind of, I reckon we wont see him in 2017 either, but before Florent. Edwards is my bet.

Edwards does need a rookie upgrade to do so though.

Just a gut feeling but I recon Hayward is closer to a round 1 start than you think.

We have a senior list of 38, so we can have a nominated rookie elevated to the senior list without any LTI etc...... So a good pre-season from a rookie and they can be elevated for the season.

Arrh that's right forgot we went with 38.

Edwards is the most ready rookie.

No doubt he's AFL worthy but is he Swans worthy... and I'm not necessarily thinking this season, I'm more star gazing into 2018.

We have a heap of potential in midfield but it'll remain potential until given a chance.... and someone's going to have to make way for that to happen. Going forward I see our midfield having a few locks - they are Kennedy, Hannebery, Parker, Mills and Heeney. I see McVeigh and Jack as incumbents but not locks at this stage and then they have competition from Robinson, Foote, Hewett, Jones, Florent and then potentially Hayward and Rampe.... and I'm sure there are others I've forgotten too.

I just feel those two (McVeigh and Jack) are one long injury away from becoming trivia questions. Both are one sided and starting to slow down

they were all talented, especially johnston and vespremi, but not competitive and aggressive enough.

You actually 6?

Veszpremi looked ok. Felt his career died v the dogs from memory in that final where he looked soft

bit of a let down from the Hype of Mills last year

what do people see as realistic expectations year 1?

3rd in the best and fairest?
50 goals?
Just learn to play for the jumper. His skills are unquestionable so all Olly has to do is listen to all the experts at the club & he will thrive onfield & more importantly for him, off filed.

Bit of time under shaw will help

Depends how they want to use Florent. Outside runner - he could debut next year. Jones was always a young bull. Needed the body so as to hurt others more than he could have hurt himself. Edwards is the one to watch. Ready to go. Just gotta have the right head space and be a true adherent of the swans culture. Cost us nothing but could be the bargain gem of the whole draft. We are his last chance saloon. The exit beckons. Can the famous bloods culture turn him around? If so, we steal a first round pick!!! And everyone had given up on him till pick 17 rookie draft and the Swans did what nobody was persuaded to do. Take a risk and do what GWS and Essendon were unable to do. Achieve his potential. Woo hoo. Gotta love this Club. Hasn't happened yet.......but you know what.....I reckon the odds are greater that failure happens. Success awaits Edwards if he buys into the culture.

Papley with his op, will be behind the eight ball for rd 1-4, so opportunity for small, quick forward early in the season is my guess. Also, 2nd year blues, may hit papley or not, so maybe a question mark over his impact early in the season.
The coaches will reward any kid who excels at endurance (and form of course) in the preseason training, like they did with papley last year.
So far Foote, Dawson, seem to fit the bill - but the door is open for any hungry young swan.

LOL pick 17? Where did that come from? Try 49. Every other Club passed him by, multiple times through all drafts. A fail will not be a loss.....but it won't happen, and the Swans ability to renew and regenerate players will gain an extra layer of lustre.

All-Australian defender Nick Smith has tapped into his own expertise to help give Ollie Florent a leg up ahead of his first AFL season.

Smith has worked closely with the Sydney Swans’ first-round draftee this pre-season, drawing on his own experiences playing on the best small forwards in the competition to ease Florent’s mind in what’s been a whirlwind summer learning the teachings of forward coach Brett Kirk.

Confiding in a defender may not be what most young forwards think of in their initial months especially with the game’s leading goal-kicker, Lance Franklin, at your disposal.

But, then again, Smith’s glowing record against the league’s best smalls is hard to ignore.

“A few guys have been helping me out (but) Nick Smith has been unreal for me,” Florent said.

“He’s played on all the best smalls in the game so he’s been telling what they do and what I can do in certain situations.”

Ollie still looks small! That video on the swans site, he looks like Jordan Footes shadow standing next to him. I do think Florent can be good for us, but I really think he needs some time in the system before he can handle the physical demands of the game.

Many slightly framed outside runners have no appetite for the crunching tackles. They don't have the bodies to take it on. Their job is to avoid being hit and not getting caught. It's why they have turbo boost and after burners. Having said that, we have had few players over the years who fit that bill. And when they do....they cop a heap of criticism. eg Jets. It's just not the Swans' way. We like them all to play in blue singlets and take the hit when required. So you are probably right. Until Ollie can handle the heat he won't be gifted a game, even though we are crying out for a player with the legs to carry the ball and break the lines.
