Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

Usually starts seasons well giving us hope that he’s taken the next level but then plateaus and tapers off at the end of the season.

Maybe he’s doing an uno reverse?

But no I haven’t seen him this bad before. He’s a fumbly low confident mess atm. Down 5 disposals from last year and down 8% in disposals efficiency. Change of role
Or not that is poor from someone who’s about 150+ games.

I've never understood the hype with Florent. And this is the worst I've seen him play. If I were coach I'd cut my losses and delist, he won't be attracting anything higher than a late 3rd at the trade table.

Random timing off his best game of the year

I'm far from his biggest fan but I would never delist a player of his quality. He's a fringe player that would be best 23 in most teams in the league.

The problem is people's expectations of him. IMO he starts on the bench. He's been tried in every position on the ground and never made any of them his own, but he's not a VFL grade player imo, just a perpetual bottom 6 player.

He doesn't have the skill set of a bottom 6 player imo... a bottom 6 player imo is someone who's not very talented, but plays with heart and determination and just gets the basics right.

Florent is meant to be a fast, skilful player who can weave through traffic, yet he doesn't do that. He's not great by hand or foot, and isn't great at the tough defensive stuff...

He's not the type of player you pad out your team.

I don't disagree with your assessment of him as a player but he's not the kind of player you delist. At absolute worst there's at least 6 teams who would trade for him and he's slightly better than developing players like Corey Warner so he gets a game with us most weeks imo. I hate seeing him in the backline but if we're missing a gulden or McInerney on the wing he's an adequate replacement.

I don't think we will delist Florent. When Gulden and Mcinerney were unavailable, I think he was our next best winger.
Actually I have him slightly behind Lloyd. The problem with both of those is neither is very good defensively. Both were used in defence because we needed their attacking skills for exits. Both have been largely superseded in both areas. Having both in the team brings about an imbalance. It's not that they're bad but that others are better.

Taking the piss with the hate for this bloke. Who would you rather play, Caleb Mitchell?
Exactly this. None of our listed mids in the VFL are even close to Ollie. It will be a different story once our injured players return but I think he won't be the only established player under the pump. And that's the way it should be.

Been injured so skimming through the start of 2024.

His first 9 weeks in 2024 were awesome he was one of our best , freo and hawks games almost had 30 touches, marks, tackles even a few goals , score involvements looked great.

Since he put pen to paper for 5 years (which seemed awesome at the time and the writing was we signed a key player ) he has never quite been the same , turnovers increased, less of the ball, less tackles . Now we sort of accept he is a C grade bottom 6 solid player at best , but he got 5 years for a reason- not to be fringe. But where's his best gone ?

Unfortunately due to our stupidity in signing him long term, we’re stuck with him.

Sometimes I wish we could be like the NBA and trade players without needing the players consent.
Another Melb club will be interested, maybe Saints, Demons, Nth
